    2. Hello, I'm trying to find any information on my 3rd gr-grandfather. In the Library of Virginia he's listed in the Muster Roll page 402. When I contacted the NARA for his papers they couldn't find him. His name was Achillis Smith. Can anyone tell me how I can find out anything about him. Thank you! Sandi

    3. If I recall rightly, the building of Fort Meigs on the Maumee River was being finished by troops from Ohio and Pennsylvania in February of 1813. The Battle of the Raisin was in January 1813 - that is north of the fort. 3. The Militia is a group of men "mustered" or called together to support the regular army if needed. They would try to get together and drill to be prepared. My ancestor was in the militia as a rifleman and was mustered in at York PA. There are some muster rolls listed in the published PA Archives, that is where I found my information. Then I went to the State Archives and found the hand written rolls on microfilm and found my ancestors signature there. 3. According to the book: "The War of 1812" by John K. Mahon, 1972, page 100; New York had 14,866 men in its militia. The regular army totaled 19,036 in February 1813. State militia contributed most of those who saw service in the second war with the British Empire. 3. Have you written for the land records, both locally and the record of issue at the Federal level, and also pension records if they exist. The answer should be in these records. If you don't specifically see a record where the land was deeded to him for his service, then the possibility exists that the land was flipped and sold by someone else to him, for their service in the war. This happened frequently where the original holder of the land certificate sold it off to someone else, and that purchaser became the first owner of record. ----- Original Message ----- From: "s'dale" <sheridale@webtv.net> To: <WARof1812-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 19, 2003 9:31 PM Subject: Hopping > i have tried to locate service confirmation on my ggggrandfather, gideon > hopping, who was a soldier in the war of 1812. nara had no listing for > him. i don't know where he enlisted from for sure (oh, pa, nj, ny) but > know he was living in warren co, ohio (1817) and then greene co, ohio > until he moved to illinois in 1832. we know he received federal land > grants for his service in the war of 1812. why wouldn't he be on any > lists? the discussion on substitutes got me wondering > > > > > > ==== WARof1812 Mailing List ==== > MESSAGE HINT: Limit your per line characters > to 55 to 70 for a much better return message. > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >
