Andrew, Unfortunately I'm looking for the same information that you are: Any info. about the 13th Regiment and where they fought. The information listed below was supplied to me. My relative is Elisha Clark of Peru, NY and he fought at Plattsburg but until I know which regiments fought where, I have no idea which Elisha Clark in the list below is mine. I cannot find Elisha Clark listed anywhere as ever receiving a pension even though he lived long enough. Therefore, there appears to be no pension records on him. Can anyone help? Thank you Brian for pointing out that the 13th NY Militia was mainly a Delaware Co. Militia. That probably removes the 13th from consideration. Does anyone have any info. on any of the other regiments that I've listed below that I could share information with >ELISHA P. CLARK 46 Reg't (Coxe's) NY Militia Corporal >ELISHA P. CLARK 101 Reg't. (Carter's) NY Mil. Sergeant >ELISHA CLARK Sumner's Reg't, VT Mil Private >ELISHA CLARK 1st Reg't (Martindales) VT Mil Priv >ELISHA CLARK 1 Reg't (Van Buren's) NY MIl Priv >ELISHA CLARK 101 Reg't (Carter's) NY Mil Priv >ELISHA CLARK 13th Reg't (Dobbins) NY Mil Priv >ELISHA CLARK Benedict's Regt, NY Mil Priv >ELISHA CLARK Capt. I have information about 2 men who served under Capt. Thomas Waterman and Col Luther Dixon from Johnson Vt. in Sept. of 1813. They were Israel and Benjamin Ober. Unfortunately for me, they were not my ancestors! ----- Original Message ----- From: <Dhazvt@aol.com> To: <WARof1812-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 10, 2003 11:33 PM Subject: Vermont in War of 1812 > Does anyone have any idea what regiments were in Vermont and especially one > which might have had men from Johnson, Vermont enlisted in them. > > Thank you, Dot > > ______________________________
Dot, There are over 7000 soldiers from Vermont in the War of 1812, and a number of Regiments drawing from all over. You might try the Vermont County roots web site and see if anyone has a County or Town History that might list that data for you. Also try the SKS ,Books we have look up section on roots web in the Vermont section. It would provide you with some data to list. WEhat name are you looking for from Johnson Vermont in the War of 1812 Patrick ----- Original Message ----- From: <Dhazvt@aol.com> To: <WARof1812-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 10, 2003 8:33 PM Subject: Vermont in War of 1812 > Does anyone have any idea what regiments were in Vermont and especially one > which might have had men from Johnson, Vermont enlisted in them. > > Thank you, Dot > > > ==== WARof1812 Mailing List ==== > WAR OF 1812 QUERY BOARD > http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USWARS/War1812/General > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >
Andrew, Hard one to call on General John Swift, as a number of the NY militia Regiments were in NYC, in 1814, where a Brig General Joseph Swift was beginning the supervision of breastwork construction on Aug 9 th. By the 31st, 6000 militia soldiers paraded through the City. Scratch the hard to call!! I went back and dug up a Lt Col. Philetus Swift, that was also listed as a Col. in the Swift/Dobbins Regiment in 1814. This regiment was comprised of New York Volunteers. It didn't seem to make the message board, but by viewing a number of pension files, military records, or autobiographies of those involved with these regiments one can put together an idea of what service there ancestor was involved in, especially if one has the service times of their ancestor. Col. Dobbin would indeed be a good start. There were two William Whites in the Swift/Dobbin Regiment; (1) William L. White (2) William S. White Patrick ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew C. Does anyone know if there were many mercenaries from Westphalia/Westfalen, Germany on either the U.S. or British sides? If so, would anyone know the names of specific units from Kreis Guetersloh towns that were in N.Y.,N.J. and Pa. and that general area? Thanks. Jim
Does anyone have any idea what regiments were in Vermont and especially one which might have had men from Johnson, Vermont enlisted in them. Thank you, Dot
My 3rd great grandfather, Joel Gillett, served as Captain of an Artillery Company in the 13th NY Militia Regiment. He was from Franklin, Delaware Co., NY. The 13th NY Militia Regiment was under the command of Colonel Putnam Farrington, from Delhi, Delaware Co., NY. Joel Gillett is listed on the Delaware County, NY record of Militia Enrollments & Oaths three different times. First enrolled as an Artillery 1st Lieutenant on June 2, 1807. Then as a Captain of Artillery on May 23, 1814. His last listing is as a Major in the 5th Regiment Artillery on October 22, 1821. My other 3rd great grandfather, Darius S. Smith, is listed as serving as a Private in "Farrington's Regiment", 13th New York Militia. He was also from Franklin, Delaware Co., NY. Capt. Gillett's daughter and Pvt. Smith's son were married on October 11, 1821 in Franklin, Delaware Co., NY. The 13th New York Militia Regiment was primarily a Delaware County, NY regiment. I am seeking any information on where the 13th NY Militia Regiment served during 1814. Any suggestions on where to search would be welcome. Brian Campbell Derwood, Maryland alpenduo@msn.com
Hi Carol, << ...I'm interested in Dobbins.... >> Would this be a Col. Dobbins? Am I to understand that he was the commander of the 13th NY Militia Regiment? On my gggreatgrandfather William White's pension application of 1859 he stated that he had served in Col. Dobbins Regiment in 1814. As far as I can tell he was a Captain of Rifleman in this particular tour of duty. Any information about this regiment, where they fought, where they were organized from, anything else... would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Andrew C. White

Does anyone have any information on Capt Fuller's Company of the New York Militia? I'd like to know where his company served and in particular anything about Pte RUEL WARE who (I believe) died in that war. Thanks, Lillian
Isaac TRIPP was a sergeant in Capt. John Handy's Company of New York Volunteers under General Porter. He enlisted in Rochester for a term from April 1814 to August 1814. He was wounded at Fort Erie by a musket ball passing through his abdomen. He was in hospital at Buffalo six weeks and was discharged in October 1814. At the time of enlistment he was 22 years old. He later applied unsuccessfully for a pension. Can anyone give me information about this company or about Capt John Handy? As a sergeant is it likely that Isaac had prior military experience? Would hospital records exist for this period? Thanks to everyone who posts information about the War of 1812. Until recently I did not know there was such a war!! Karen wrote: >I've written on this earlier, but I'm still wondering. The War of 1812 militias, as far as I know, were made up of volunteers. There was no draft for militias, was there? Yes there was a draft. The federal government toyed with the idea, but didn't think it was constitutional. So they just required each of the states to supply a certain number of soldiers. So the states each had their own draft to fill quotas. My [3?4?] gr-grandfather PRIER was drafted on Staten Island, NY in the fall of 1814. i don't think there were exemptions at that point, as he was 26 years old and had a six month old, a 3 and a 4 yr old. As far as I have been able to tell, Capt. Oakley's company of Col. Connor's Richmond County Bn never left Staten Island, but it seems that most of its members were drafted & served from Sept to Dec.. I don't remember if it was in 1812 pensions, or in RevWar pensions that I've read, but I have seen substitutes for brothers, friends, and employers. Jim
I recently learned that my ancestor John Toler's commander was Captain William White. Does anyone know anything about the Tennessee company this person would have been with? Would like to know some background on any campaigns, etc. Also, if anyone knows anything about John Toler (b. abt. 1796 in NC m. 1821 n Williamson County, TN d. 1872, Johnson County, KS) I would be very happy! Thanks, Christine.
