Dear List Members, Thanks so very much for the informative answers to my question. I will now be able to make an intelligent request for pension information regarding my War of 1812 ancestor and his wife. With gratitude, Del Chausse

Remember to request the complete file rather than the pension document packet it is well worth the extra cost. I do not know how long these requests are taking, but if you are the impatient type it is usually much faster to hire an independent researcher. Dear List: Could anyone please tell me the NARA form number which I would use to get the widow's pension record for a veteran of the War of 1812? I have searched and somehow have not been able to find the form. I have the pension number. Many Thanks, Del Chausse
I am looking for any information on the company of U.S. Rangers from Vincennes Indiana, under the command of Capt. Brown or Capt Parmenas Beckes My 3rd great grandfather was in this unit between 1812 and 1815 i have muster sheets and payroll logs but know nothing about the unit or the battles they fought. I would appreciate any info that is available. Thank You Aaron Easton
I heard there is a wonderful military history library in Carlisle. Supposedly it keeps an amazing amount of military related items and records. I don't remember what the full name or city it is located within, but I bet you can find it if your do a general internet search using "carlisle military museum" or some form of that. The 1814 Niagara Campaign for the 21st Regiment is very well covered in two Canadian books (most likely available through Amazon.com). Red Coats & Grey Jackets - The Battle of Chippawa, July 5, 1814, by Donald E. Graves ISBN 1-55002-210-5 Where Right and Glory Lead! - The Battle of Lundy's Lane, 1814, by Doneald E. Graves. ISBN 1-896941-03-6 Both are extensively researched and the Chippawa book have all US casualties listed in the appendix. Both are very exciting reads in my humble opinion. Hello List, Back in 1998 or so, a team of ladies was trying to put together a list or database of all the participants of the War of 1812 from the various sources then available. Does anyone know if they ever "completed" that gigantic task and/or if there is a website for this list perhaps. I have the current task of helping our genealogy society to know how to find their War of 1812 ancestors. Thanks...Ron Gaddis, Lincoln, NE
I'm trying to find where Company or Orderly Books for the 21st US Infantry might be housed. Is the National Archives my best bet? Hi List, I am a former list member back near the outset when we lived in Morocco, but have been absent from the list for a few years. I have received the NARA records (such as they are) for my ancestor and am trying to decipher the following abreviations in what appears to be a service roster or record. I.R., D.R. S.A.M.R. are abreviations for which I do not yet know the meaning. He enlisted on 13 Aug 1812 and was mustered out on Long Island 3 Oct 1817 according to family records. The entire record is as follows: I.R. Capt. Hayen's Co., Aug 31, 13, present D.R. Feby 16, I.R. Greenbush, Feby 28 & Apl 30, I.R. Capt. Robt G. Hite's Co. U.S. Arty June 30, I.R. Capt. Jas H. Boyle's Co. Aug 30, D.R. Oct 1 & I.R. Oct 31 & Dec 31/15, Present - I.R. Feby 29/16, On furlough since Feby 15/16 - I.R. Capt. M. Swett's Co. Apl 30, June 30, Aug. 31, Oct 30, Dec. 31/16, Feby28, Apl 30, & June 30/17, Present - I.R. Aug31 & S.A.M.R. Ft. Columbus, N.Y., Dec 31/17, Discharged Aug30/17, term expired - Book 554, Discharged Oct. 3/17. term expired - U.S. Drags made U.S. Arty after May 17/15. If anyone knows the meaning of the 3 terms or recognizes any of the officers or places listed, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you, Ron Gaddis, Lincoln, NE
Skip Can someone tell me where the 24th Reg of Tennessee Regulars served in theWar of 1812... ??? ///////////////////// I think the defiitive answer to this portion of your question would be in the Tennessse State archives///////////////////////// AND was this unit also known as or part of the 24th US INF ..???/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// My best guess is yes, State Militia units were formed to fullfill the states required Federal troop quota and then were sworn into Federal service. The 24th recruited as you stated in your query and was formed of Tennessee men recruited from this area.//////////////////////////////////////////// and how does Boyd's 4th Regular Virginia Militia play into this mix....??? My ggg-gf served in this unit under the command of Col. Wm. P. Anderson/////////////////////////////// As Militia units were formed in the States, the commanding officer of the militia would frequently find himself replaced when it became a federal unitdepending on his military experience or political connections. William Anderson served as a Lt Colonel commanding the 4th Virginia as well as serving with Lt Colonel Boyd in the 4th Virginia. You would have to do some digging to locate time frames and further information.//////////////////////////////////////////////////// and Captain's Alexander Grey & Robert Butler...He served from June 1812 - Feb 1814... enlisted discharged at Nashville.I have seen references to action at Ft. George in Canada ( that I find hard to believe ) ... and also have seen reference to Capt Robert Butler being with Jackson at Taladega and New Orleans...??? //////////////////////////////// The 24th Infantry was at Fort Stephenson on August 2nd 1813, The Longwoods in March 1814 and Mackinac Island in Aug 1814. It is possible that Captain Butler did serve at New Orleans as when his service was up in the 24th, he may have signed up with the one of the Tennessee Militia units that did serve.
