The Canadian National Archives has microfilm of the extent records of the British Army and militia: http://www.genealogy.gc.ca/10/100902_e.html Looks like the MG 13 series may have some information on the 4th Regiment of Militia. The site says they have 844 rolls of microfilm; you may have to contact them about details about what is on the rolls. This is a bit off topic, but if you ever want to gain a quick sense of what a battle was like that an ancestor fought in, try visiting a Wargaming convention. The War of 1812 has become a popular gaming scenario in the past few years. HMGS (Historical War Gaming Societies) conventions in Lancaster PA and Gettysburg are among the largest conventions held in North America, though midwest and westcoast conventions are large and well covered as well. For those interested in Naval events, I thought this website was just too good to NOT pass along.... Terrific site. The illustrations are really well done. Both those and the text help a great deal to understand what happened and they come from those at the location and best able to know what occurred.

Bonjour, My wife's ancestor, ASA BLANCHARD, according to his widow's 1855 application for a Bounty Land Warrant, was with Captain Warren Ellis' regiment of Vermont Militia commanded by Col. Parley Davis during the Invasion of Plattsburg, NY. He volunteered on 8 September 1814 and served for 14 (sic) days, being discharged 15 Sept. 1814. I have been trying to find some info on that particular event. Lossing's book skips over the "battle." Does anyone know of an account of that incident? The book: 'Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Kentucky Soldiers of the War of 1812', Frankfort, 1891, has 8 men listed with the name John Foster and one Jonathan Foster. None were officers and the county of service is not stated. Can anyone help me with a listing and any other information (the more the better, of course!) about this name? I believe he was my earliest know ancestor and was born about 1786 in either VA (Union Co.) or KY (Green Co.), married Rhoda Bloyd 1809 Green Co., KY, had sons named Hiram and Armstrong (I found others with these names in War of 1812 which are probably kin, but can find no proof). Can actual records be obtained that might give family info? If so how and where, etc. I am new to military research so pardon me if I ask a silly question here...:-) Thanks for any help, LOUISE BIAS-HILL
Searching for names of American soldiers, War of 1812, who died at the Detroit garrison between late October and mid-December 1813. An epidemic of some kind ( similar to cholera, but not cholera, as cholera wasn't introduced to the U.S. until 1832 ) swept through the fort, killing 1,300 men in a space of 2 weeks, according to Gen. Cass's report. A mass burial was made, but those bodies were moved in early 1980's to make way for a people mover. Have good reason to believe that my ancestor Pvt. JAMES MARTIN died there. Any help appreciated. Joyce
