    1. Ancestors name
    2. George B. Carmichael
    3. I have several ancestors who fought in the Civil War, and at least one that fought in the Revolutionary war. I have managed to document them, and now am interested in perhaps joining the War of 1812 Society. I probably have at least one who is eligible, as all my family is spread out between Mobile Al and Houma, La. and were in that location back in those days. Does the society have a list of persons involved in that fracas, as the DAR does with it's patriots? If so, how do I obtain one? Regards, George George B. Carmichael

    1. RE: [WARof1812] Finding unit locations
    2. Scott Baker
    3. Lieutenant Colonel Robert Pogue was at Fort Defiance in Ohio under Brigadier General James Winchester in the Fall of 1812. No mention of the unit he was commanding at the time. The rosters for Kentucky say he was in command of Pogue's Regiment from August 27, 1812 to September 26, 1812; there was a Robert Pogue at the Battle of the Thames. Under Pogue, Belt was Captain of the 2nd Company. Captain Joseph C. Belt was also in command of the 4th Company of the 28th Regiment United States Infantry which was formed January 29, 1813. Members of the 28th Infantry saw action on Perry's ships at the Battle of Lake Erie in August 1813; the regiment was at Longwood and Sturgeon's Creek in Canada. You might try researching Captain Belt - where he went, so went his unit. This database is a listing of men mustered into the armed forces between 1812 and 1815. Taken from records in the National Archives, each record includes the soldier's name, company, rank at time of induction, rank at time of discharge, and other helpful information. It provides the names of nearly 600,000 men. These records were taken from Record Group 94 Records of the Adjutant General's Office, microfilm publication M602, a total of 234 rolls of film. Compiled Military Service Records (CMSR) Each volunteer soldier has one Compiled Military Service Record (CMSR) for each regiment in which he served. The CMSR contains basic information about the soldier's military career, and it is the first source the researcher should consult. The CMSR is an envelope (a jacket) containing one or more cards. These cards typically indicate that the soldier was present or absent during a certain period of time. Other cards may indicate the date of enlistment and discharge, amount of bounty paid him, and other information such as wounds received during battle or hospitalization for injury or illness. The soldier's place of birth may be indicated; if foreign born, only the country of birth is stated. The CMSR may contain an internal jacket for so-called "personal papers" of various kinds. These may include a copy of the soldier's enlistment paper, papers relating to his capture and release as a prisoner of war, or a statement that he had no personal property with him when he died. Note, however, that the CMSR rarely indicates battles in which a soldier fought; that information must be derived from other sources. A CMSR is as complete as the surviving records of an individual soldier or his unit. The War Department compiled the CMSRs from the original muster rolls and other records some years after the war to permit more rapid and efficient checking of military and medical records in connection with claims for pensions and other veterans' benefits. The abstracts were so carefully prepared that it is rarely necessary to consult the original muster rolls and other records from which they were made. When the War Department created CMSRs at the turn of the century, information from company muster rolls, regimental returns, descriptive books, hospital rolls, and other records was copied verbatim onto cards. A separate card was prepared each time an individual name appeared on a document. These cards were all numbered on the back, and these numbers were entered onto the outside jacket containing the cards. The numbers on the jacket correspond with the numbers on the cards within the jacket. These numbers were used by the War Department only for control purposes while the CMSRs were being created; the numbers do not refer to other records regarding a veteran nor are they useful for reference purposes today. Further information about each soldiers' military service is available on the original records, which should be consulted. Use the information found in this database to locate your ancestors among those records. Information found in this database may also be used to lead you to other records, including other military records (i.e. bounty-land records, pension records, prisoner-of-war records, burial records, etc.). 3. I have a John CURRY who allegedly served in the Mississippi Militia. I am advised that this John Curry received his last pension payment through the New Orleans Agency on or about June 11, 1879, Certificate No. SC 18378. John Curry died Aug. 28, 1879, and is buried in old Sardis Cemetery in Choctaw County, Alabama. I am aware that pension files for veterans of the War of 1812 can be ordered through the National Archives. I am curious, however, as to whether there are any online resources from which these pension files can be discussed and ordered? Thanks, David

    3. The book "Roster of Ohio Soldiers in War of 1812" , Adjutant General of Ohio, 1916, has three men with the name Thomas Adams: Thomas Adams - Private, Captain Thomas Latta's Company, (Note says probably from Jefferson County), September 15, 1812 - March 21, 1813. 1st Regiment Ohio Militia. Thomas Adams - Private, Captain George Gibson's Company, (Note says county unknown), July 28, 1813 - September 6, 1813 and August 23, 1814 - January 11, 1815. 1st Regiment Ohio Militia. Thomas Adams - Private, Lieutenant Robert Harvey's Company, (Note says probably from Ross County), July 13, 1813 - August 17, 1813. 2nd Regiment Ohio Militia. According to my map, Ross County borders Highland County on the east. Jefferson County is on the Ohio River north of Steubenville. The one from Lt. Harvey's Company of the 2nd Regiment may be him, of course he may not be. The first two could be the same man, several were in more than one regiment and the dates do not overlap. I requested Bounty Land Application papers from the National Archives, I don't think it costs as much as military records, and it may help verify what regiment he was in and where he was at time of enlistment. 2. A friend asked this question: I know that in September 1813, after the American naval victory on Lake Erie, Tecumseh was shot and killed and that after the battle Kentucky militiamen skinned and mutilated his body. It was reported that Tecumseh was buried in a mass grave near the battlefield. Recently I was doing research and ran across a 1906 article in the local paper stating that Tecumseh (or at least part of him) was buried in the garden of Carlyle House.  Do any of you recall hearing that his body parts may have been spirited away as souvenirs?  I think it is unlikely that parts of him are buried here but I thought it would be fun to explore it.  In the unlikely event that it happened to be true it would give Carlyle House a link to War of 1812 and some publicity.  If any of you have heard about this possibility let me know. 3. Barry, I just perused through about 14 different affidavits or accounts on the death of Tecumseh, that were by the British, by the Americans and by the Indians themselves, and some accounts address where he was buried . Several accounts by the Indians state that Tecumseh was not mutilated, as late as a day or two after the battle, nor evere, but that an Indian near him was. That Indian near Tecumsehs body was scalped, and mutilated by having strips of skin removed from him. The opinion seems to be that some of the American forces had believed this Indian to be Tecumseh due to how well decked out he was. Tecumseh usually fought in rather plain Garb and was dressed the same on this day. It is stated more than once that Tecumseh was buried near the field of battle and one account states that the burial was within sight of the American campfires.
