Marilyn There is a William Down with an old War pension file #IF25031 who served in Captn Opie's Company of the 5th US Infantry which answers your next Query question as to if Militia and US Infantry were covered in the pensions. Also found are those with no pensions received, but land received. Captn. Leroy Opie was born in Va and joined in Va. He was a 2Lt in 1808, 1Lt in 1809 and Captain 26 jun 1813. The 5th was formed of men mostly from Penn Patrick Cummings ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marilyn Bess" <bess@penn.com> To: <WARof1812-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 06, 2005 8:16 AM Subject: Re: [WARof1812] Swift's and Dobbins Regiment (1814), New York Vols. > Thanks Patrick, I just got back from the archives. You can bring your camera, digital and Video, scanner and computer in to the research room on the second floor. this is the area where the pension files, and other records are brought to. You can not take anything else. I was surprised last year when I visited. The archivist indicated that more electrical changes were coming. I do not think there is much limit to what can be taken in the area where you view the microfilm. By the way my genealogy program triples in size, not from adding new names but form the records I scanned. I have war of 1812 records from several years back that I have not got put in my files but the ones I did this year are. You can bring your laptop and scanner into the Archives? That surprises me - even my local library won't allow that (a laptop yes, a scanner no). You can scan the files on your own flatbed scanner or copy on the archives, take digital pictures of the files. There are some records and items that can be copied to you disc so the archivist told me. Thanks Patrick, I just got back from the archives. I have all of the Drowns but Mijcajah. I corresponded in the past with a descendant of his. I am looking for anything in files that help identify my families or rule out a person. In attempt to identify the missing sons of Wm Drown, I started going through all the Drown civil war pension files of men from NY, PA, Mi, Wisc, Mo and Iowa. I got about half way through. I also have Arantus Everts pension file. from the War of 1812. He was high ranking and served on some council .He lived in the Hector area of NY. Also from that area was a Joseph Gillespie who was killed in the battle of Lewiston. He was a Rev veteran and his bounty land was the area where Burdet in Hector, Schuyler county is located. I also have some Joseph and Samuel Hyatts pension files that I am trying to identify. Am I right in assuming that the Wm. Downs does not have a pension file Thanks again everyone, Marilyn Bess ----- Original Message ----- From: " Patrick" <Patrick20@comcast.net> To: "Marilyn Bess" <bess@penn.com> Sent: Monday, December 05, 2005 3:49 PM Subject: Re: [WARof1812] Swift's and Dobbins Regiment (1814), New York Vols. > Marilyn > The only Drown names appearing in the pension files are( Aaron; Infantry, > state?)( Benjamin; Virginia,)( Gilbert; NY,)(Micajah; New > Hampshire, )(Moses; New Hampshire,)( Samuel; New Hampshire, )(Ezra; New > Hampshire) > Patrick > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Marilyn Bess" <bess@penn.com> > To: <WARof1812-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, December 05, 2005 12:27 PM > Subject: Re: [WARof1812] Swift's and Dobbins Regiment (1814), New York Vols. > > > >I believe the book does says Dobbins unit. there are several who later > > appear in Bradford,County, PA in the same unit. Sorry, Marianne! Must be the lateness of the hour. Adele/Seattle
As always, Patrick provides wonderful detail and tips. Marilyn, have you tried book searches on: _http://www.alibris.com_ (http://www.alibris.com) Adele (formerly from really cold Minneapolis--traded my boots and shovel for an umbrella and raincoat)
When you mention Erie County, do you mean in Pennsylvania? The PA State Archives has some muster Rolls for the War of 1812. Also, I requested pension information from the National Archives for my ancestor Frederick Fronk to find no file, But, I then requested any Bounty Land applications and he did apply in 1853, although he was denied. The application had a few good bits of information, like his birth date. Your friendly and informative e-mail exchanges prompt me to ask if you can also help me. A few years back while researching my roots in Kalamazoo, MI I found an entry in Virgil D. White's "INDEX TO WAR OF 1812 PENSIONS" the following listing: Barrett, Charles L. Old War IF-#12308, srv as Pvt.in Capt. Welsh's Co (Ord Dept) 4th US Inf Regt, sol srvd under the name John Lee. This Charles Lucius Barrett was my g g grnd fthr. NARA records show that his widow Abalina Jackson Gregory Barrett filed for a pension (2 July 1864). Later their daughter Sarah Barrett Snyder also filed. Both were denied but no reason given. A Roots Web member suggested I contact a local researcher which I did, a Eugene H. Black who came up with the same information I already had. Would it make sense for me to try to obtain the rosters of Capt. Welsh's company (Ordinance Dept) and or the 4th US Infantry ? Charles Lucius was born in France (near Belgium) in 1789 and may have come to this country as a French soldier. (His father, Joseph Barrette, my progenitor, was also in the French Army). Both sons, Charles and Henry Joseph stayed in the US rather than return to France. Charles Lucius may have deserted the French army or, as was common back then, may have been hired to take another's draftee's place. Any suggestions to further my research will be warmly appreciated. Don Barrett
To those searching for lost 1812 soldiers! The Archives searches for a soldier upon request in the MILITIA records. They DO NOT then go and look in the U. S. ARMY INFANTRY records for your soldier, so when you receive a NOT FOUND, it could be due to a number of reasons. (1) spelling variations (2) inadequate or inaccurate information provided (3) He did not serve in the militia, he served in the U.S. Army Infantry (4) Etc., Etc. If you don't find in him a NARA Militia search. RETRY noting US ARMY Infantry. Marcia, The name could have been spelled as Frank, Fronk, Franc, etc.. There was a Frederick Frank in Hamilton's Rifle Regiment, Penn. Militia Roll #75, Record # 493. What was your soldiers BLM #. There is a Frederick Frantz that did receive land, but did not receive a pension. (Strange) This Frederick Frantz was also noted as Frederick Francis. If this is him, then the reason you did not locate a service file on him was because he served in the US Army Infantry, and this must be noted on your request, or they search only Militia Records Patrick ----- Original Message ----- From: "Houston" <houston4@netcarrier.com> To: <WARof1812-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 05, 2005 5:38 PM Subject: Re: [WARof1812] Colonel William Ross and Captain Joseph Bancroft > When you mention Erie County, do you mean in Pennsylvania? Hello List, I am glad I woke everyone up! Before I asked the list, I had tried all the goggle searches I could come up with, all the other search lists for the War of 1812, and no luck with a list of the men in the regiment or a history of it. Lots of others but not this one. I wasn't thinking about pension files but apparently, neither of my guys applied for one. Joseph Bancroft is listed as a Lt. but when he moved to Michigan he is a Captain. Promoted, I guess. I have learned a lot about the War of 1812, tho. As far as I know, they both were living in Erie County, or that vicinity so were probably in the "Battle of Sodus". That area must have been a wild place to live at that time! And, Adele, my people came from that same area in Massachusetts. Joseph's sister, Lucinda married an Oaks (we don't know his name) and for her second? marriage married William Ross and she is my ancestor. William and Lucinda both moved to Oakland County, Michigan along with Joseph. William and Lucinda died in Genesee County, Michigan and are buried in Avondale Cemetery. None of this will help anyone, probably, but you never know. And lastly, Marilyn do you have the book you mentioned, "Along the Susquehanna"? I would be interested in a copy, I think. Sorry to be so long. Marianne in really, really, cold Michigan

Does anyone have a list of the members of this unit? I have the bounty land records of Gilbert Drown who was in this unit. I have his pay stubs from some other units. Looking for Howland Soles in Dobbin's 2nd Regiment of New York Militia. Any info appreciated. Shirley
Marilyn, Gilbert Drown does not show up in the records of the Swift's & Dobbin's unit but does show up in Dobbin's 2nd Regiment of New York Militia, and then in Swift's 2nd Regiment of New York Militia. Only a time frame, and their Captain compared with each units service history could detirmine if it was Swift's & Dobbin's Regiment at the time. There isn't a record of a William Drown or variant in all three units. There is a William G. Downs serving in Dobbin's 18th NY Regiment, and you can put a William Brown in all four.
