    1. [WAROF1812] 13th US Infantry in the War of 1812
    2. Jenny Bodenham
    3. I am looking for information about the 13th US Infantry, NY. It appears my ancestor, William Scott, served as a private with this regiment in 1812. I suspect he may have been killed in one of their actions in 1814. The date and place I have been given with regard to his death is 21 January (or February) 1814. His place of burial is thought to be Greenbush, Rensselaer Co. NY. I have not been able to verify the previous information. I have sent for William's pension file and for the land bounty documents but while I wait for this information to arrive I would like to learn as much as possible about the 13th US Infantry, NY. I've had a look at a few sites using Google but it would seem that there isn't a great deal to find. I thought there might be a more definitive source that someone could recommend. Thanks. Jenny

    1. Re: [WAROF1812] Look up
    2. With so many hits on my email seeking help on the War of 1812, permit me to add my request, as NARA results have been feeble at best. My gg grnd fthr, Charles Lucius Barrett served in the War of 1812 under the alias John Lee. Lucius was born in France near Belgium,in 1789. Lucius came to his new country with his parents and younger brother. His father Joseph barrette, my progenitor, was in the French army. Lucius may also have been in the French army. He may enlisted as a French army deserter, or as a "hired gun" serving in the draft for someone else, or some otherv reason. The claim for pension by his widow Abalina Jackson Gregory, (married in 1819) and by his daughter Sarah Barrett Synder were both refused according to NARA. Abalina's claim state that Lucius served in the Ordinance Department under Major Davey and a Capt. David. V. Welch. Sarah's claim states "think it was the 4th US Infantry. ANCESTRY.COM lists several records of John Lees but none seem to match. Any research suggestions will be warmly invited. Don Barrett

I haven't really got any first names of any relatives but all of my relatives were either in NC or VA during 1812 and before so maybe there will be one listed. 3. There were native armericans living in the areas north of Pittsburgh then. Riflemen were chosen for their shooting ability. He probably joined for the same reason people join today. Mark -----Original Message----- From: warof1812-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:warof1812-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Eva Dayle Zippay Sent: Sunday, October 15, 2006 3:01 PM To: Warof1812@rootsweb.com Subject: [WAROF1812] Daniel Hamilton First, I want to again thank those of you on the list who helped me so much with my questions regarding Daniel Hamilton. Next, I want to float a theory, and I thank all of you for your patience. As I've stated, I have very little information about Daniel (and, of course, he was the impetus for my family research.) I'm not the kind of researcher who is content with names--I want to KNOW these ancestors and understand their stories. So-- Family history states that Daniel and his wife had a son, Leonard, who was "stolen by Indians" I've been told the date (around 1810 or so) was too late for Indian raids, but the information I have leads me to believe it was a kidnapping by a single Indian squaw who wanted a child for some reason--perhaps her own had died recently. From my own research I believe this abduction happened between 1810 and 1814, probably sometime shortly after the census enumeration of 1810. Now comes the War of 1812. Why did Daniel volunteer as a rifleman? Now knowing the area where he served, thanks to Mark, I think it is possible that he thought joining would somehow enable him to further his search for his child. Are there any thoughts out there on my theory? Again, I thank you all for your patience.
