Dear subscribers - this is my biggest list so far - 345 subscribers as of this evening. A new place to post messages has been created and either tonight or tomorrow, I'll be sending out a personal invitation to every member shown on the list to join the new list War-of-1812. Of course, folks may still post to this list through 3/1. It should be a link you can click that will let you 'accept' the invitation to join the new group. You may need to check your spam folder as I can't say when such will be delivered. Tim Stowell
Hello fellow subscribers! I've been doing genealogy in the days before computers came to people's homes with paper and pencil and a typewriter in the late 1970's as I tried to figure out how certain people my Dad was talking to his parents about were related to me. I knew how my immediate family was connected to my grandparents and through my grandfather to his brother and their children but after that it became murky. I was helped with a series of scrapbooks started by my great grandmother in the mid-1890s and handed down to my Dad's sister who kept them up until near the end of WWII. My interest in this list is that I had a great something or other grandfather that served a short time in that time period in upstate New York and because of late I've had a couple of inquiries on the same topic. I figured since there was a list for this perhaps folks here could help me help others and/or vice versa. Currently, for one group or another, I host sites in New York, Tennessee, Georgia, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Alaska. I've been building and maintaining websites since 1996 dealing with all these areas. So, if you need help in any of those areas, please feel free to write me. Tim Stowell Chattanooga, TN
Hello everyone It's chaotic for list administrators at the moment, having just been told that Ancestry is no longer going to host RootsWeb lists. We're all trying to sort things out behind the scenes. To that end, I'm transferring the administration of this list over to Tim Stowell, who is an experienced researcher and administrator. Please welcome Tim to the list. It's been a pleasure being this list's administrator. I wish each and every one of you much success in your family research. Kind regards, Lynne

List administrators were recently sent the message below indicating that as of 2 March 2020, all RootsWeb mailing lists would close. Further discussion and queries can be placed on the message boards at <https://www.ancestry.com/boards/> The message boards are free to use and only require a one-time registration with a valid email address and a name. Hello everyone As you know by now, RootsWeb mailing lists are up and running. Many things need to be fixed, though. One of the items currently being addressed is why messages from subscribers are not always going directly to the list. In many instances, these posts are being held for administrative action. The Powers That Be suggest this might be happening when the poster, although subscribed to the list, may not be registered with RootsWeb. So, please register with RootsWeb. It takes only a few moments and might fix the posting issues. Instructions begin at http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/setupmail Thanks! Lynne
>From the RootsWeb home page: Update: January 23, 2018 "Great news on the progress of getting RootsWeb back online. Today, we are bringing WorldConnect, one of our most valued features, back online. As we make WorldConnect available, it will initially be in a read only state. You can now search for people and view information as you did in the past; but for now, we cannot accept new uploads or modifications to existing GEDCOM files. We expect to add this additional functionality in the coming weeks. "Also, here are answers to a few questions we’ve heard from the community: "Why is this taking so long? RootsWeb has many terabytes of data uploaded by users across its various features. The site also has hundreds of thousands of lines of code. We have been scanning the data using a variety of tools, and that takes time. We’ve also been examining the code and the underlying systems. Some code is being refurbished, and some will need to be more fully rewritten to add the layers of security needed in this day and age. We know it may be frustrating, but we are committed to returning data to you in a safe manner. "Have you found any other security problems? We haven’t found any other problems, but we want to thoroughly update systems to ensure the safety of your information. "Is Ancestry going to start charging for RootsWeb? Ancestry is not going to start charging for RootsWeb. When functionality returns to the site, you will still be able to view content for free. "I’ve heard not everything is coming back online, is that true? We will be returning WorldConnect and Mailing Lists back to their full functionality. Other features are still being evaluated. In cases where we are unable to bring back previous functionality or content, we will explore ways for people who uploaded data to retrieve it if we don’t feel we can put it back online safely. Hello everyone In case you haven't been keeping up with the news, Ancestry has posted additional information about the RootsWeb outage at http://www.rootsweb.com/ I'm very happy to report that the administrative tools now seem to be working and administrators can again take action when messages don't make it to the list because they're too big or have other problems. This is the first in a very long time that Ancestry staff has been communicative about the issues affecting RootsWeb. Excellent progress. A very happy new year to you all! Let's go break down some brick walls. Lynne list admin.

Extremely late notice of what might be a rather informative talk, but just found out about it myself: The British Newspaper Archive webinar, a live presentation, entitled "Making the most of the British Newspaper Archive," will air today at 4pm BST. "In this webinar, Aoife O Connor [Data Development Manager, British Newspaper Archive] will show you how to get the most out of the website. Learn search tips and tricks, discover the special features of the site, and find out how historic newspapers can break down genealogical brick walls and bring the history of your hometown to life. " Sounds like a very useful presentation. If you're unable to attend the webinar at that time, there will be an opportunity to listen to the recording.
