The following is the little I know about the Amherst County Wares: Amherst Co, VA in the Revolution by Lenora Higginbotham Sweeney: Edward Ware, b. Amherst Co, VA, Oct 18, 1760. The books lists several tours of duty during the war. He was placed on Pension Roll July 30, 1833. Thomas Ware, b. Amherst Co, VA, 1762 or 63. Book mentions his service and states he died Dec 26, 1851, & Mildred Ware, pensioner's widow applied July 3, 1853, they were m. in Buckingham Co, VA, Oct 15, 1787. Raised 14 children: Mrs. Elizabeth Pugh is the eldest, John Thomas, Martha, Nancey, Malinda, Mildred, William, Edward, Peyton, Polly, Virginia, Almira & Robert. Edward Ware left a will in Amherst Co in which he lists Mark Ware, James Powell, William Powell, John Powell, Edward Powell, Elizabeth Joplin, Sarah Ware, Wife Lettis (Letticia) Ware. The will was presented in court on 3 Jul 1786 by James and William Ware alias Powell, two of the executors named therein. William Ware left a will in Amherst Co in which he lists Wife Patty, son Ormund, sons Madison, Jno; Nancy Rucker; daughter Sally Jopling; daughter Permelia Powell; granddaughter Nancy W. Rucker when of age, dtr of Tinsley Rucker; daughters Betsy, Lucinda, Belinda, Perlina. Executor brother John Ware. Inventory dated 1813 refers to him as Col. Wm. Ware. Some items from "Colonial Caroline. A History of Caroline Co, VA by T. E. Campbell. Nicholas & Edware Ware served on the First Grand Jury for 1747. Edward Ware was granted a license for a tavern from 1740-44 near Conway's warehouse. In 1754 Edward Ware and Millicent Powell were executors of Mary Powell's estate. In 1762 Henry & Nicholas Ware served as lieutenants in the Militia. In 1754 Henry and Nicholas both were listed as blacksmiths. In 1768 Henry and Henry Ware, Jr. executors to Wm. Allcock est. In 1772 James Ware arrested for preaching without a license (Baptist). In 1744 Nicholas Ware, Jr. executor for Nicholas Ware. In 1770 Nicholas Ware (along with others) refused to serve on Grand Jury because of laws governing worhsip and taxes. Each fined 350 pounds of tobacco. Tobacco inspectors at Conway's Warehouse; Nicholas from 1753-1766; Robert from 1769-1776. In Land Office Patents and Grants for VA find the following early entries: Nicholas Ware, New Kent Co, 21 Aug 1665, 386 acres, Patent 5, p. 185. Nicholas Ware, New Kent Co, 22 Sep 1682, 300 acres, on the north side of Mattapony river, about 4 miles back in the wooks; adjoining his own land, land of Jeremiah Rawlins, dec'd, and Mr. Cardingbrooks land. Patent 7, p. 179. Valentine Ware, King and Queen Co, 2 May 1705, about 600 acres, patent 9, p. 657. Valentine Ware, King and Queen Co, 2 May 1705, 260 acres, patent 9, p. 657. Valentine Ware, Henrico County, 5 Sep 1723, 262 acres, in the for of Tuckahoe Creek on the north side James River. Patent 11, p. 203. Valentine Ware, Henrico County, 10 Dec 1724, 167 acres, north side of James River, in a great fork of Tuckahoe Creek. Patent 12, p, 122. This is all the documented information I have found on the Ware family. Have not gone past the 1830 census in Amherst Co, since my Ware was in Jackson Co, OH by that time. Hope this will be of help to some of the Ware researchers. Yvonne Warner

Hello, Yvonne. I do not have info on a Wm. Ware b. 1805...have Wm. b./d 1748, Wm. b/d 1778, Wm. b.1867 d. 1928. I do have an Eleanor Elizabeth Hudson m. Paulus McDaniel Ware and Paulus was from Amherst area. Do you have info on Tildon Ware or Dr. Ruby Ware in Amherst. My relatives lived on Indian Creek in Amherst, home of Elsie Ware Drummond. In 1993, Dr. Ware's 92 yr. old daughter lived in a home in Amherst on the corner of Hanger and Main. If she were alive, she could answer lots of questions on the Amherst Ware's. The Ware farm now belongs to Hiram and Thelma Wheeler (1940's). I have been exploring the Wares for a short time on the net (My Mother was a Ware in Roanoke), and it nice to find someone who speaks of the Amherst Wares since I visited there at Elsie's farm in the 1940 after her death. Hi Dave, My line is ( Richard, Jacob See, John Alexander)
In 1850, a James Ware married Lucinda C. Miller in Franklin Co., MO. He was my 3g-grandfather, and I have no birth or death information on him. He had a son George (1850-1929) who married Martha Hendrichs (1859-1930). They had twelve children: James (1885-1919), L. Pierce, Charles, Columbis, Asa, Elmer, Anna, Cora, Bessie, Susie, Nellie, and Maude. Do you think this James Ware may be the missing James Wear? Do any of the grandchilrens' names tie back to Ware names found in your file? Adding to your discussion of this WARE family, I would mention there is another Valentine WARE who was the son of the the first Valentine(son of Peter WARE & Jane VALENTINE). This Valentine WARE(Jr.) married Mary Dudley of K&Q Co,VA and was granted 600 acres of land in that county in 1705. He served as vestryman in Stratton Major Church, K&Q Co, between 1729 - 1739 with his brothers, John & Edward WARE. I am a descendant of Edward WARE via James, John & James (m. Eliz.Miller). A great aunt of mine did a lot of research in Goochland Co. for Mr.Wilder and is listed in the credits. I am using the 1960 edition, "Wilder Families in the Southeastern United States" by William M. Wilder. Rebecca Tucker Blake Hanover, VA ACREE, ANDREWS, BOOKER, BUTLER, DUVAL, ENROUGHTY, FOWLKES,HADEN, JENNINGS, KENNON, ROBERTSON, TAYLOR, TUCKER, WARE
Regarding the recent discussions concerning Valentine Ware and his descendents, how does Edward Ware who married Letticia Powell and left a will in Amherst Co, VA fit into this family? In the 1704 rent rolls for King & Queen County, Edward, Nicholas and Valentine Ware are listed. I have a William Ware, born in 1805 who moved to Jackson Co, OH about 1830. In another household is listed Elizabeth Ware, apparently a widow, since she has younger children and of the age (born between 1780 and 1790) to be William's mother. William named his first son Anderson, which is a name used in the Amherst County Wares. Can anyone tell me how this ties to the Amherst County Wares? Yvonne Warner
In a message dated 98-03-27 08:42:45 EST, you write: << ACREE, ANDREWS, BOOKER, BUTLER, DUVAL, ENROUGHTY, FOWLKES,HADEN, JENNINGS, KENNON, ROBERTSON, TAYLOR, TUCKER, WARE >> Rebecca, I also have a Butler in my line--Mary who m) John Tipton Louise
The closest name I have to Almira/Elmira Ware is Erma Louise Ware, 1893-1952, she had 6 boys and 3 girls, perhaps Almira may be one of these?? What are the dates of b/d? To Valentine Ware, my records are from a Robert Early Ware (b1903) and he said an old lady in Kentucky contributed to some of his info. Also note, Robert went to Europe in the 1970's and researched Wares, visiting the cemetery at Trinity College in Dublin where descendants of Sir James Ware are buried, and he visited the town of "Ware", about 20 miles N of London and noted info on the "Great Bed of Ware" which is now in the Victoria-Albert Museum in London. According to my records, there is no Sr./Jr. Valentine Ware, because there is a generation between the two: Peter Ware, Jr. m. Jane Valentine Valentine Ware (1640-1693) (no wife stated) Edward Ware m. Elizabeth Garrett (probably from King and Queen Co., VA) Valentine Ware (1726) m. Elizabeth Taliafero (Taliaferro) Col. William Ware (1748) m. Patta Davis (Col. Ware's name is on a monument at the Gloucester Courthouse, VA. William Ware, Jr. (1778) m. Rosamond Rucker (granddau of Ambrose Rucker) and so on. Do you know the name of the "Wilder" book? I'd like to see that info. Many thanks and sorry so long. Sherry in Saluda, Va. > From: Frederick W. Well, I have gotten a lot of my information from the Wilder book (which I am sure has some inaccuracies) but I did some work on my Ware side from other sources too. Some say that there are two Valentine Wares (a Sr & Jr); I have seen no conclusive proof of this but it might be out there. What I sent you is from the Wilder book and a chart of the Wares prepared July 1991 by J. Crawford Ware and Forrest Johnson III both of Troup County, Georgia. Forrest is an historian for the county and he has Ware genealogy in his History of Troup. County. Henry is the son of Valentine Ware and Mary Dudley according to the above sources. I'll look up some more. Fred Huff

Fred, please e-mail me regarding your knowledge of the Valentine Ware lineage. I am in direct lineage with Paulus McDaniel Ware, but my family records show two Valentine Wares and no Henry.
