We have uncovered a name shortening of McGuire to Wire in Augusta County, VA in the late 1700s. Which lines changed their names and which didn't is known at this time. There are records for this family that include the following spellings so far: Wire, Wier, Ware, and Wear. In the following lawsuit filed in Augusta County VA, we find a treasure chest of information. The Francis, who is listed is the line, which changed their name. However, several other lines may have followed as well. As you read the suit ignore the McGuire name and substitute your spelling. I have much additional information and will share with anyone who thinks they may tie in. Please E-mail me at: jerry wear <[email protected]> Do not send attachments or html letters to this address. 3. Thanks Tom! This is getting more and more interesting all the time! This may indeed lead me to Captain James N. Ward's hometown...if someone doesn't get there first! I understand General George Armstrong Custer of "Custer's Last Stand" fame did write to an Augusta Ward Frary in this same area of New York. (See next paragraph.) I wonder if there is a connection between James N. Ward and Augusta Ward Frary. Will have to call the Rochester Public Library on this subject. Perhaps they have more information. <It is my hope that I can nail down the ARMSTRONG connection in Ireland this way. To my knowledge, no one has been able to do this. I believe it is possible that my Jane Armstrong and General George Armstrong Custer are from the same family in Ireland.> Per note from Carol ([email protected]): "The letters are in the archives of the Rochester Public Library and were purchased from a private collector. They wer written to Augusta Ward Frary who was born 31 May 1835 in Bugettstown, PA. A letter from the library asks if John Ward, Augusta's father, is also the brother of Maria Ward Kirkpatrick Custer." Unknown after Lovina died. I know this isn't a lot of help but I suggest you research that cemetery carefully as you may find additional relatives there. Be very careful in your research as there are 2 other weird lines in the Townships around St. Clair. Also the Wear/Weare line of Prebble Co. were on the Butler Co. boarder and Lemon Twp. I would research that will of Jacob Wehr in 1848. I know Butler County very well geographically, so if I can ever assist just let me know. Take care. 1. Re: Wehr Family
    2. Hi Jerry Wear, I don't know much about this family before 1850 but here goes. Jacob and Catherine Wehr were born in PA. They married around 1809 in Pa. According to the 1810 Census, they had one son, Eli and two daughters at that time. They had another son, Enos in 1812 sometime after that they moved to Butler Co., Ohio where their third son, Gabriel was born in 1817. In 1818 they donated two acres of land to the Hickory Flats Cemetery near Overpeck, Ohio. On November 26, 1824, their son Jacob was born in Overpeck, Butler Co., Ohio, followed by Franklin in 1827 and Lorenzo in 1829. Jacob owned a farm in Butler Co. and owned and managed the first distillery in the state. I found a book census for Ohio in 1840 for Butler Co., Ohio listed are Jacob Wehr, Nathan Wehr and Jonas Wehr, all of St., Clair Twp. I also found a book, Wills and Estates to 1850, lists Wehr, Jacob E-1848 BU a-t8 p541. I know that Jacob born in 1824 died on June 15, 1913, in Butler Co. and was buried in Hickory Flats Cemetery it may be that Jacob and Catherine are too. Nellie Barnes
