Deese 17 M NC ---- Stewart Co.,TN 1788- A new county west of the mountains was called Tennessee, established by the General Assembly of North Carolina. It included either all or parts of what is now known as Robertson, Montgomery, Stewart, Dickson, Houston, Hickman, Humphreys, and Cheatham Counties. Land grants were given to Revolutionary War soldiers and militia. It was known as "Tennessee County of North Carolina". Stewart County was settled principally by North Carolinians, the first of whom came some time about 1795, that State having issued military grants to survivors of the Continental war, Hayden Wells, grant from 174 and 640 acres were received by him.
