    1. Castle's Woods: Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799
    2. Several months ago I offered to copy for interested researchers James W. Hagy's thesis on the frontier settlement of Castle's Woods, Virginia. I had searched for many long years before finding an actual copy of this work at a rare book dealer in North Carolina. This thesis was presented to the Faculty of the Department of History, East Tennessee State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts, 1966. The original thesis contained no copyright provision as did the 1979 Russell County Historical Society printing which contained landowner maps and local Russell county info. that did not appear in the 1966 version. This one unfortunately can not be copied. I thought I was done with this project but recently have received a number of additional requests for this material so I have decided to make ONE more printing and then retire from the copying business. For all of those folks who for one reason or another failed to secure a copy of this work, this is the last chance. "This thesis is a narrative account of the frontier settlement of Castle's Woods. The community is an interesting case study of the ideas of Frederick Jackson Turner regarding the frontier. Castle's Woods in many ways fits the pattern of the typical frontier community. Apparently first settled by a long hunter, Castle's Woods, like a magnet, drew westward the classic frontier types, hunters, farmers, speculators, surveyors, artisans, and preachers. Even some aristocrates settled there. The usual frontier customs and activities were observed in the community. These included a considerable amount of lawlessness. The greatest problem for the settlers in Castle's Woods was the Indians who were a menace from the time of the first settlement until nearly the end of the eighteenth century. After the Indian problem had been eliminated, the frontier stage quickly passed away...... A large amount of primary materials were used in this study. The most important sources were county records, state archives, national archives, and the Draper Manuscripts." The importance of Castle's Woods is twofold. First, it had its day of importa nce as a stepping stone to the West. Secondly, it is important as a case study of the American frontier. It was the first permanent settlement in Russell County, Virginia, founded in 1769 and located on the Clinch River. Many of the early southwest Virginia families are discussed in detail including Russell, Walker, Cowan, Porter, Moore, Campbell, Stuart, Houston, Montgomery, Snoddy, Thompson, Robinson and many, many more. Detailed accounts of many of the Indian battles are described in great detail and this research material makes interesting reading. If anyone would like information on how to acquire a copy of this 140 page thesis please contact me privately at cscunc@aol.com. Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. I make it a practice not to open anything I don't recognize or is worded funny. I have deleted it and all associated files. Sorry for the inconvenience and if you know a way to keep this from happening again, let me know. to Last Celtic Shaman Thank you for making a difficult situation a little easier. 3. I am looking for Ward, Davis and Myers information. Henrietta George Davis married my great grandfather, Thomas Ward, of Cecil County. Her father was Henry George Davis (married to Elizabeth Caldwell) and grandfather was a Judge and/or Dr. Henry Davis from Delaware. I'm also researching the Wards and other branches related to this family. That would include families of Allan McLane Ward (b. 1888) and Henry Davis Ward (1886-1949) , both sons of Thomas Ward. Isabelle Myers (1892-1984) married my grandfather Henry Davis Ward and their children were William Ward (1918-1991), John Ward (1922-abt. 1999) and Henry Davis Ward, Jr. (1925-1986)(my father). I would also love to hear from anyone researching the Myers family. Isabelle's parents were Joseph Albert Myers (1856-1919) and Grace Forrest MacKay (1859-1905). I'll be glad to share the information I have related to these families and their ancestors. Ellen Ward ellen@bcpl.net

    3. why are you adding to the problem by sending this around. many of the new worms have a Trojan horse in them and don't need to be opened. all you need to do is receive them in your email program. i don't know if this is one or not, but if it is, you're only making the problem worse. there are a few new one's floating around that you screw up your computer just from the email address. so, in short, don't become part of the problem. in addition, this is not the forum for such matters. there are many sites that have anti virus programs and firewalls available for free. members can find them on their own. i don't mean to sound offensive but this reminds me of the old saying about crying fire in a crowded room. causes more harm than good. ----- Original Message ----- From: ""Sid \"Buddy\" Moore"" <smoore@ojai.net> To: <WARD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 30, 2001 10:24 PM Subject: Virus > dnjsplace1@mindspring.com > > Today I received a message from the above address and it was blocked by > an anti virus program. 2. Bill Trott
    3. I recently wrote to the VA-NC Piedmont Genealogical Society in Danville, VA for copies from a Bible. They had some copies from a file but not the Bible. There were two pages from the original Bible and one page (both sides) of a typewritten transcript. The originals had births and marriages only. Now the problem; in the transcript there were many more births and also quite a few marriages, indicating that there should be more pages from the Bible. I am trying to locate the original Bible by posting this message to the Surname-L and in the GenWeb noted in the transcript. The transcript heading is ‘Ward-Bacon Bible Records’ and has the following surnames: Bacon, Craghead, Gregory, Harris, Lamkin, Leath, Marshall, Ward and White. The time frame is 1750 through 1850 and in the Southeast Area of Virginia (my Bacon’s were in Lunenburg County). Bill T
