    3. Carl, your narrative was very well done. How lucky that you have access to the family bible! You asked if anyone has a child of some family of Wards that's about the right age in the counties of West Virginia. I do, my own brick wall. I have a George S. Ward, b. 1778 somewhere in VA. He appeared in KY by 1800. He stayed in KY for his lifetime. Good luck! Anne

    3. Gigi, Do you know where in SC he was? I have a William Ward, and I don't have any dates, except he was married in Fayette Co. Ga. in 1835. Someone told me, that a lot of Wards came from S.C. and I can't remember which county now, and went to Fayette Co. Ga. My William Ward was married to a Clarissa Pearson, who was born about 1808 in N.C. Wonder if there could be a connection somewhere? Becky

    1. Charles WARD, Allegany Co NY and Adams Co ILL
    2. Carl W. Ward
    3. Its been a while since I've posted my WARD brick wall. If anyone has a connection, please contact me. (Phew...! When I re back over all I typed here, its a lot. Hope ya'll don't mind.) Charles WARD born 15 May 1805 in Allegany County, New York (I think). (Have found no record of him there. Do not know his parents. I do know there was a James Ward living in the town of Nunda, Allegany County, New York during the early years (1810) of this county and while he had a number of children, it appears that he had no son named Charles. I also know there was a Zebadiah Ward that lived in this same area of Allegany County, NY during that same period of time but have never been able to find any other names in his family there. First record found so far of my Charles WARD is in Adams County, Illinois on 17 August 1836 where he married: Martha BURKE born 11 March 1816 in Russel County, Virginia daughter of John BURKE and Rebecca VERMILLION. After purchasing land from his in-laws, Charles and Martha had their first 7 children in Adams County, Illinios: 1. Martha Jane born 5 August 1837 died October 1839 2. William J. born 15 October 1839 married America BEARD 6 July 1871 in Knox County, Missouri 3. John B. born 10 February 1841, died 29 May 1924 Knox County, Missouri, married (1) 2 September 1869 Jossephine BOLTZ in Knox County, Missouri, married (2) 10 October 1917 Clydie Mae PAINTER in Knox County, Missouri. 4. Isaiah A. born 4 October 1842, died about 1916 near Tulsa, Oklahoma, married Mary Kathrine Christensen 5. David C. born 8 August 1844, died 24 December 1916 Knox County, Missouri, married 28 May February 1847 Almira Lingenfelter in Knox County, Missouri NOTE1: All the names of Charles and Martha's children shown here (above & below) were found in an old WARD family bible. In addition to the 8 numbered here, there were two other names listed in this relative position (a) Milton S. WARD, birth date of 25 April 1848 and (b) Newton T. WARD, birth date of 25 April 1848. See NOTE 2 below for additional discussion on these two names. 6. Harvey Z. born 20 December 1849, married 2 May 1872 Rachel Annie BOLTZ in Knox County, Missouri 7. Granville born 1 September 1852, died 12 February 1904 in Quincy, Illinois. Charles and Martha's 8th child and my grandfather, was born in Knox County, Missouri (see below) where Charles purchased 160 acres near Millport, Knox County, Missouri (originally called Millford). The farm was about 6 miles ea st of Baring, Missouri on County Hiway K , near the intersection of Hiways M & K. In 1975, the farm home still remained standing althought it had been remodeled and changed some. Charles is buried at the Millport Christian Church Cemetery, in Knox County, Missouri. 8. Henry Harrison born 15 January 1859, died 30 September 1929 in Callaway County, Missouri, married 13 September 1932 Viola Bell ENO in Vinita, Oklahoma. I have more info on the children of many of these people. Would sure appreciate hearing from anyone with a possible connection to any of these families. NOTE2: The individuals Milton S. and Newton T. have never been thought of (although I could certainly be wrong) as children of Charles and Martha (Burke) WARD for several reasons. (1) No other records related to this family have ever been found referencing these two names. (2) An old family tale was told about one of Henry Harrison's children by his much younger wife of American Indian blood (my grandmother). Supposedly Henry's 7th child had some very special healing powers and the reason given, was this. He was the 7th son of a 7th son; meaning that Henry Harrison was a 7th son. Now, whether or not the child had these healing powers is of course not knowm, but the story does strongly suggest that Henry was the youngest of 7 boys. If so, then who are the other two (Milton S. and Newton T.) listed in the bible? (3) There was another person listed at the end of the children's list named Caleb G. WARD born 2 Sept 1835 in Indiana. This child turns out to be the 2nd son of a Zebediah Ward, also born in New York about 1825 and his wife Martha ?. Although not listed in this bible, they also had William H., Samuel J., and Lydia A. and all of these children were born in Indiana. I have always suspected but not proven that this Zebediah WARD and family were close relatives of my Charles WARD. I do know that they lived just north of my Charles WARD in Hancock County, Illinois from the early to mid 1800's and moved to Knox County, Missouri at the same time that my Charles did in 1856 where they all joined the same church. The records found to date indicate that my Charles was born in Allegany County, New York in 1805 and showed up in Adams County, Illinois in 1836, where he married and had a relatively large family. But, according to an old family "hand-me-down" story just recently found, Charles migrated to Illinois sometime during that 1805 and 1836 time frame, by riding a mule from West Virginia to Golden, Illinois. Golden is in fact, in Adams County, Illinois but this is the first time I've ever found anything that suggest Charles might have been in West Virginia at an earlier age. Does anyone have any record showing a Charles Ward or a child of some family of WARDs that's about the right age, in the counties of West Virginia during that time frame? Would sure appreciate hearing from you, if so or if you have any suggestions. And again, please forgive me for being so wordy, here. Carl W. Ward carlwward1@charter.net

    1. So Many James Wards
    2. In the late 1800's in Johnson County, Kentucky, one community was named Ward City. They had at least five by the name James Ward. To distinguish, they were addressed by their nicknames, "Big Foot", "White Hair", "Nine Toes", "Bit Nose", and "Gritter". Written documents might show James "Big Foot" Ward, etc.
