    3. I am looking for a William Ward who supposedly came to Orange Co NC from Md. Job Ward may have been a brother. Wm arrived there about 1750. He had sons named,Thomas, James, and William Jr. We estimate that William was born ca 1710 to 1720. He outlived his children and died in Randolph Co in 1802. This area of Randolph came out of old Orange. Any clue would be appreciated My e-mail address is dennis.e.ward@worldnet.att.net DEW ----- Original Message ----- From: Debbie Franklin-Krauss <commhousemom@hotmail.com> To: <WARD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 22, 2001 8:53 AM Subject: Re: WARDS from Maryland > My Ward line is from Maryland. 1. Heraldry, Coats of Arms etc
    2. Chris Ward
    3. Hi All, Firstly you do not have to be a peer, a baronet or a knight to be entitled to bear (a coat of) arms. An excellent site is the English College of arms at http://college-of-arms.gov.uk The American site is http://users.aol.com/ballywoodn/acheraldry.html These two sites will answer most basic questions and have links to sites that will explain the blazon which is the written description of the arms which was originally in Norman French Hope this helps Chris

    1. Re: Coat of Arms question
    2. A Coat of Arms is different for different families and members of a family. Not all families have a coat of arms and not all members of a family are allowed to use them. The sites that came in today on the list has several and shows one changed to reflect the 2nd born son. The 2 sites that were on the list yesterday explain this pretty good. Inga

    2. Does everyone with the last name of Ward have the same coat of arms? My family was McWARD at one time, then changed to WARD. Would that be the same as someone who was McBAIRD, then to WARD? My great grandfather was McWARD...should I go with WARD? TIA, Donna

The coat of arms for a McWard or a Ward family rightfully belongs only to certain hereditary descendants of each immediate family of the individual who established the original coat of arms. Even then, there are certain heraldic symbols used on the original coat of arms to signify the relationship to the original bearer of the coat of arms. The coat of arms you usually see are properly used only in relationship with the individuals formally recognized as members of the peerage. Unless your family has the appropriate relationship and formal recognition, the use of someone else's coat of arms is inappropriate, even though there is or is not a kinship. There is nothing, however, to keep you from making your own coat of arms, using appropriate heraldic symbols. Dallas Patterson nye@fidalgo.net
