    3. Thanks to all for the wonderful lessons in history. I find it all very interesting. All these stories help us to better understand our ancestors and the sacrifices they made. 1. Wards and Hills
    2. Due to the hair and eye coloring and connections with Hills, I went back and discussed this with my dad who remembers his grandmother. I have found a few more dates. William Thomas Ward b. 5-8-???? to 9-3-40 married Mary V. Pruitt 9-10-???? - 10-4-1960. They had 7 children: William Henry Ward b. 1913, Annie Elizabeth Ward 03-19-11 - 04-05-76, Louise Ward Wilson, Sadie Ward Walker, Robert Thomas Ward 1927 - 10-11-1983 (served in WW 2 but kept going AWOL), Peggy Ward Burch (left home as a young adult and was last heard from in Las Vegas) and Vernon Ward. Almost all are were red haired and blue eyed. Red hair was on both sides of the family both Wards and Pruitt. Annie Elizabeth Ward married my grand father, Alfred David Hill. His g-grandfather, Thomas W. Hill, came from Scotland with 2 brothers. The brothers went west and were never heard from again. If anyone can connect to either of these families, please let me know. I am at a brick wall with the ward family. Thanks to all for your help!! Tammy Ratledge

    2. But, genetics are a part of genealogy. I am so stuck on my great grandparents I had never thought to check out the unusual chance of hair color and types (red, curly hair with blue eyes). This is a strong family trait in my family. I know my paternal family was Scottish but the traits do not come from that side. It is truly the Ward side. Sincerely, Tammy Hill Ratledge

    1. red hair and blue eyes
    2. I am having so much trouble tracing my VA/NC Wards but one of the recent posts caught my attention. My paternal grandmother was a Ward. She was a red head and so was her mother and several brothers. Her first child of 5 was a red head but was still born. The rest had dark brown hair and dark skin. My dad tells me that a resemble my great grandmother a great deal. I have red hair and blue eyes which I understand is typical of this line of Wards. I am the only grandchild out of 13 with red hair. Are there other Wards with red hair? I would be interested to know. Sincerely, Tammy Hill Ratledge Researching William Thomas Ward who married Mary Pruitt late 1800's in VA/NC. Not much information here.

    3. Hi, just to clarify things, there is NO KNOWN RELATIONSHIP between Andrew WARDE and Joyce (Trafford) WARD. Joyce's family, including the FLETCHER line, moved to Newark NJ. Joyce Ward of Wethersfield CT was definitely married to Richard Ward of Stretton, Rutlandshire. He died in 1635, and his will is reproduced in the "New York Gen. and Bio. Record", vol. 49 (I think that was around 1918). There isn't any question; his will names his sons the same way as Joyce's will does, and he mentions his daughter in law Mary Fletcher. The "Stephen" thing came I think from Stiles "History of Ancient Wethersfield" and even he had a ? by the name. I think there has been some recent work on Andrew WARDE, but I don't have notes on it. As far as I know he has never been traced. But Joyce's origin in England is well documented. 2. In my James Ward b. 1786 NC/Martha Patsy Ledbetter b. 1790 NC line we have quite a few very Blonde, Blue eyed, extreamly fair offspring. This family was huge and many of the children are unaccounted for. It was noted in a Ward book that several left Ga and moved to TX and OK. Martha was reportedly very fair complected with pale blonde hair and blue eyes. Barbara of Ca

    3. Don't think my WARD was Native American because my paternal grandmother was blond and blue eyed. Her father was supposedly born in AR, then migrated to TX before 1875 because that was the year his oldest daughter was born and all five daughters were born in TX. I've never seen any pictures of three of the sisters, and the one I met when I was a child had white hair and blue eyes. I've also often wondered what the draw to Arkansas was because I because my paternal great grandparents (a totally different branch!) moved there from Georgia--but they also ended up in TX! But they were in Arkansas at the same time. Anyone have any ideas? Samantha California

    2. These are some things that I was told today. They make very much sense to me, but please let me know what you have heard and if this information is sound. I have learned that the Cherokee people had many light skinned, blue eyed and light haired in their number. Their hair was generally redder than most Native Americans. If you have been told that your Wards are Black Irish, or Black Dutch, that is a euphemism for Cherokee, as the blood had to be hidden up until about 1960 or the threat of having your land taken and being sent to a reservation was very real. When I was a child I would have people as if I was "Indian" so I asked my dad. He told me that was always a possibility but That we were Black Irish and Scots. When I asked what Black Irish were he told me that those were the native people of Ireland, like the Indians were the native people of America. This was 35 years or so ago, and I have always told my child and anyone who asked I was Black Irish and Scots. Have I been saying Cherokee and Scots all these years and not known it? Anyone have an answer ?????
