    2. Hi, Barbara! I hate to reply to every posting on earth, but my ggrandfather was named Thomas Ward and he was born 4/15/1849 and, supposedly, according to census records was born in TN, but, we all know about census records. He ended up in Saltillo, Lee County, MS. I am open because I know nothing about his parentage. . . What do you think? Let me hear if you feel a positive vibe. Bebe Roper Byerly

    2. I shall look forward to hearing from anyone who have information about the Richard & Joyce Ward of Stretton. I have the IGI for Rutland and could do look-ups for you, although I dont think there is any mention of the above - too early. At the moment I dont know whether or not there is a connection with my Wards but you never know in this lark do you? Rita of Chesterfield living in Germany.

    3. Rita, this is very interesting to some of the people on this list, who are descended from Richard Ward and Joyce (Trafford) Ward of Stretton, Rutland. Richard died about 1635 and Joyce and some of their children emigrated to Connecticut. But some of their children stayed in Stretton, including some boys who may be ancestors of your Thomas. Stretton and Clipsham are very near to each other. Michael Ward -- (who is NOT related to Joyce, but thought I'd mention this connection for others) [email protected] wrote: > > Subject: > > WARD-D Digest Volume 00 : Issue 151 > > Today's Topics: > #6 new subscriber [[email protected] (Rita.Eff] > Subject: new subscriber > Date: Sat, 1 Jul 2000 13:09:33 +0200 > From: [email protected] ([email protected]) > To: [email protected] > > My Ward interest begins with the birth of Thomas in 1740 in Greetham, Rutland. > He married Alice Dexter 1767 in Clipsham. 3. > I've also often wondered what the draw to Arkansas was . . . Anyone have any ideas?< The United States made the Louisiana Purchase, which included the land that is presently Arkansas, in 1803. Shortly thereafter, the Arkansas territory was opened to settlement, and the inducement to move there was good land at very low prices. Other settlers came to claim bounty land awarded for service in the War of 1812. Also, in the early 1800s, cotton was much in demand, and Arkansas was a good place to grow it. You are right--there WERE a lot of Wards in Arkansas. In 1850, for instance, over 1 in every 100 people in Arkansas was named Ward! This was by far the densest Ward population in the United States. An interesting web site showing surname distribution can be found at http://www.hamrick.com/names . Look at the 1850 map, then look at the 1880 map. The 1880 map at that site indicates that, by 1880, the Arkansas Ward population was less concentrated. Many of the Indian Wards migrated to Indian Territory (now OK) or to Mexico (now TX), of course, but many more Wards migrated to other nearby states.

    2. My Ward interest begins with the birth of Thomas in 1740 in Greetham, Rutland. He married Alice Dexter 1767 in Clipsham. Their son William Dexter Ward was born 1770 at Greetham and he married Mary Taylor at Little Bytham in Lincs in 1794. Their son Robert Dexter Ward was born 1796 at Stretton, Rutland and he married (for the 2nd time) to Frances Boyer in Bourne, Lincs in 1842. Their daughter Maria Ellen married in Chesterfield in 1875 and is my great-grandmother paternal. I was born in Chesterfield. I shall look forward to hearing from anyone with interests in this Ward Line. Rita
