WAMSLEY~WEB NEWSLETTER #3 It seems that Wamsleys were on both sides of the War Between the States. The following were soldiers that were in either the cavalry or infantry, Confederate States of America: Adam H. Wamsley Adam H. Wamsley, born October 12, 1838 in Randolph County, West Virginia (Tucker County); died August 12, 1903. He was the son of Andrew Marcellus Wamsley and Mary Harper. He married (1) Christina Crouch. The 1860 census listed Adam Wamsley as a farmer, age 22, in Randolph County, Virginia. On April 25, 1863, he enlisted in the 19th Virginia Cavalry, Company 1, Confederate States of America, at Beverly, West Virginia. On June 30, 1863, until February 29, 1864, he was present, mounted; a Private in the military, Confederate States of America. In 1864, at the age of 26, he was described as having light complexion, light hair, blue eyes, and light whiskers, and being 6 feet tall. From February 29, 1864 until August 31, 1864, he was detailed to care for the wounded. At some time, he was promoted from Private to First Sergeant. From September 1, 1864 until October 31, 1864, Adam was present, $100 bond due. On May 10, 1865, he was paroled in Charleston, West Virginia. In 1879, at the age of 41, he was a farmer in Valley Bend, Randolph County, West Virginia. Enoch Wamsley Enoch Wamsley, born 1836 in Randolph , Virginia (later Randolph County, West Virginia); died December 22, 1942. He was the son of Joseph Wamsley, Jr. and Sarah Conrad. He married Elizabeth Heavener November 18, 1867 in Randolph, West Virginia. She was the daughter of George Homer and Kate Folks. Virginia Company F, 31st Virginia Infantry, Confederate States of America. Pvt. Co. C, 19th Virgina Cavalry, Confederate States of America. On April 25, 1863, enlisted in Pocahontas County, Virginia. Present in Randolph County, Virginia on April 28, 1863. From June 30, 1863 until August 31, 1864, he was absent from the unit. Not stated if present or absent on muster-in roll August 1863. On December 26, 1863 he was captured in Pocahontas County, Virginia, became a POW, and was confined at Atheneum Prison on January 6, 1864. On January 7, 1864, he was transferred to Camp Chase and confined there. On March 14, 1864, he was transferred to Ft. Delaware and confined there. On June 21, 1865, he took the oath of allegiance to the United States and was released. Occasional farmer, Preston County, West Virginia, and Randolph County, West Virginia. (Source: 1860 census) 1879: age 44, farmer, Mingo, Randolph Co., W. Va (1880 census) 1924: age 89, resident of Monterville, W. Va. December 22, 1942: died, age 107; buried in Heavener Cemetery, Monterville, West Virginia. George Fisher Wamsley George Fisher Wamsley, born August 10, 1845 in Randolph County, West Virginia; died February 1881. He was the son of Andrew Marcellus Wamsley and Mary Harper. He married S. Margaret Talbott. She was the daughter of Elisha Talbott and Sarah. The war record of Confederate Soldier George Fisher Wamsley is on record at the Department of Archives, Charleston, West Virginia. He was a Private Company I, 19th Regular Cavalry. According to the Company Muster Roll, he enlisted April 12, 1963, Camp N. West by J.W. Marshall, Huntersville, Virginia. He was a prisoner of war captured by Union Troops April 5, 1864 and taken with other prisoners to Military prison at Wheeling, Virginia, also known as Atheneum Prison. (The 19th Regiment Virginia Cavalry was organized April 11, 1863 with ten companies, A to K, which were composd principally of former members of the 3rd Regiment Virginia State Line, which had been disbanded about March 31, 1863. Source: "A Guide to Virginia Military Organizations 1861 - 1865.) He was also a scout for Confederate Army. He was captured and arrested by Union Troops in Randolph, Virginia. He was sent to Camp Chase April 8, 1864 and was released by order of Secretary of Washington, D.C. August 24, 1864. His father, Andrew M. Wamsley, posted a land bond for his release and George signed that he would never again take up arms against the United States. Jacob See Wamsley Jacob See Wamsley, born September 04, 1823; died April 22, 1898. He was the son of Samuel B. Wamsley and Elizabeth Crouch. He married Minerva Hamilton January 09, 1850. She was the daughter of Col. William L. Hamilton and Amelia Brockmire. Captain Wamsley was a sympathizer with the South in the Civil War. In 1861 he took his family to Virginia and left them near Lexington while he joined the army, soon becoming captain of Company D, 19th Va. Cavalry. He saw much active service. His company was mostly made up of men from Randolph and Pocahontas Counties. In civil life he was largely identified with public affairs; was six years president of the county court, and was a man of wide influence and of sterling worth, who was a leader among men and whose influence lives after him. On June 3, 1863, Major D. Boston Stewart's battalian repulsed Federal Calvalry at Daniel's Farm. Among the officers commended was Lt. Jacob S. Wamsley. Noah S. Channell Noah S. Channell, born 1838 in Randolph County, Virginia (West Virginia after the Civil War); died March 02, 1905. He was the son of Samuel Channel and Sarah Ann Wamsley. He married Mary C. (Molly) Crickard 1867. She was the daughter of John E. Crickard and Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Heater. "There is considerable documentation regarding Noah's military service. The first record is that he was a member of the 107 Regular Virginia Militia (Confederate States of America) in June 1859. Once the Civil War started, he enlisted on May 24, 1861 in Company F of the 31st Virginia Infantry. He was eventually captured on July 20, 1864 near Winchester, Virginia in the battle of Rutherford's Farm (also known as Stephenson Depot) by General Crooks' troops. He was transferred to Camp Chase Prisoner of War camp on July 28 where he remained until March 2, 1865. On that date he was transferred to City Point, Virginia for a prisoner exchange. Henry M. Wamsley is taken from the records of Mary Jane Leenstra. She is decended from Wamsleys, but I have not been able to connect my West Virginia Wamsleys to her Wamsleys, mostly in Ohio. My Wamsley family goes back to Thomas, who came to America from England; Mary Jane's Wamsley family goes back to Issac, who came from Germany. Henry M. Wamsley Henry M. Wamsley, born October 14, 1840 in Adams County, Ohio; died December 31, 1862 in Murfreesboro, Rutherford, Tennessee. He was the son of William Wamsley and Eucebia Paige(?). Company K, 79 Regiment Illinois Infantry. Private; enlisted August 8, 1862 Milton, Coles, Illinois; mustered in at Matoon, Coles, Illinois August 28, 1862; killed at Civil War battle of Stone River, near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Ancestors of Henry M. Wamsley: William Wamsley, born February 21, 1811 in Adams County, Ohio; died April 08, 1894 in Humboldt, Coles, Illinois. He was the son of Christopher Wamsley and Elizabeth Stevenson. He married Eucebia Paige(?) June 25, 1834 in Adams County, Ohio, she was born February 09, 1814 in Pennsylvania; died January 23, 1894 in Humboldt, Coles, Illinois. Christopher Wamsley, born July 15, 1779 in New Jersey; died March 25, 1865 in Adams County, Ohio. He was the son of Isaac Wamsley and Leah Taylor Stout. He married Elizabeth Stevenson.Elizabeth Stevenson, born July 03, 1781 in Pennsylvania; died 1854 in Adams County, Ohio. Isaac Wamsley, born Abt 1750 in north Germany. He married Leah Taylor Stout. Alphaeus Zinn was an itinerant Baptist preacher and farmer in Barbour Cty. Have you ever heard of him and is there a relation to the Thompson Family that you know of? My gg grandmother was Mary Wamsley, b 12/22/1814. She married Jacob Harper, b. 9/16/1802, son of Henry and Elizabeth Mouse Harper. Henry and Elizabeth were born 9/26/1778 and 10/10/1778 respectively. Henry was the son of Jacob and Margaret Simmons Harper. My most immediate family was disconnected from our ancestrial home in Randolph Co.
