It is generally accepted that their brother, William, was the person mentioned in this order. At this time he was of age and himself married. In 1756 Joseph, Jr. would have been about 18 years old and Matthew about 17. The question in my mind is who was the guardian of Joseph and Matthew from the time Joseph, Sr. died in 1782 and 1786 when this order was dated. Some have speculated that the wife of Joseph, Sr. was living during this time but she wasn't mentioned in his will. Also I notice in several entries that it is stated as fact that Matthew Dorcus was the father of Judith Dorcus. As far as I know this has never been proved. The document I have states that her father "may have been" Matthew Dorcus. Newsletter #13: The marriage date of Jacob See Wamsley and Minerva Hamilton is given as January 9, 1850. I see that her question was answered on the Pendleton County listserve with a helpful item from the list administrator, Nedra Brill (brillnd@pacifier.com). This is the best information I have seen on this family: Mary Harter, FASG, was the self-proclaimed Pendleton County Genealogist and a descendant of this Cunningham Family. I have her library and files. Mary published an EXCELLENT compilation on this Cunningham Family in Volume 29 of "The Virginia Genealogist," 1985. She carefully researched the family for 30 years, looking for absolute proof since all too many "I think so's" have been published on the families of Pendleton County. There were several James Cunninghams in the area and Mary read, page by page, and abstracted all Cunningham wills and deeds to 1810 in the counties of Augusta, Bath, Rockbridge, Botetourt and Rockingham Counties, VA, and Hardy, Hampshire, Pendleton, Randolph and Berkeley, WV. [No one ever said that accurate genealogical research was quick!] Mary copied all land grants from Cunninghams in western Virginia, as filed at the VA State Archives, and traced the tracts as far as possible, and also checked records in several Pennsylvania counties. She made an extensive point of the importance of looking at ALL available records, for she often thought she had identified her ancestor, only to discover a new document that proved a different family for that man. ANYONE who has Cunningham ancestors should obtain a copy of this excellent article. I have personnally done some limited research on a few of the descendants, although not the Wilmoths. The Cunninghams are not my ancestors. Sheryl, to answer your specific question, Mary Cunningham was the daughter of James and Agnes (--?--) Cunningham, as proven by a deed from the heirs of James Cunningham to Edward Burres, dated 24 September 1810 (prov. 21 October 1819), recorded Bath County, VA, Deed Book 6:30, in support of two other deeds which give further, but not complete, proof. Mary married John Wilmoth, and it was their marriage BOND that was dated 16 October 1799, not their marriage date. Mary Harter references two published sources of information on them: Maxwell's History of Randolph County (1898), noting that John could not have been the son of Nicholas Wilmoth and Sidney Currence who were married in 1789, and "Wilmoth, Wilmeth, Etc." by James Lillard Wilmoth (Philadelphia, 1940). John and Mary (Cunningham) Wilmoth had 12 children who are named by Maxwell. James Cunningham was probably the son of John Cunningham and Mary Peterson. Perhaps someone can offer PROOF of this--much, much has been published that supposes this but no actual documents have been located. Mary discusses this in great length in the article, including the second marriage of John's widow Mary. Some of you may find this interesting. The following came through on another list tonight and thought I'ld pass it along. Many of you may know this already, but for the benefit of those who may not: In 1866, the state of West Virginia minted a medal for each of the soldiers who participated in the Civil War. Originally, 26,099 were minted and many given to the soldier himself. However, the state was unable to find all the veterans, leaving the medal unclaimed. In fact, there are still about 5,200 which have not been claimed and presented to the families of these veterans. The WV Archives are working to locate the descendants of these soldiers. The claim process is simple: 1. Go to the site, read about the medals and check the list. 2. If one of the names on the list matches your ancestor, follow the claim submission process detailed at the site. 3. They will work with you to verify your claim, and if validated you could receive the medal on behalf of your ancestor.
