I pulled out my copies of the pedigree charts with Martha Ann Wamsley & Mary Wamsley. Unfortunately, there is no other personal information about them on the pages I have. I am going to my local library tomorrow to make sure I didn't overlook any info on the preceding pages in the book ("Ancestor Charts of the Members of the Ohio Genealogical Society"). Will let you know if I find anything else & will send you a copies of what I have. I did bring a report of my Wamsley info with me & edited it while I was at my parents' house. I started entering my corrections & additions from the latest WamsleyWebs in my program today. Hopefully, I'll have it ready soon to send you. Shirley ************************* From: MAWamsley I just discovered that the Library of Virginia has now scanned their collection of land patents and grants and is making these original documents available through their web site. You can search a "card catalog" and then click to retrieve the document. The reproduction is not perfect, but I was able to read most of the ones I looked at. And I was able to print out a good quality copy of a page on my inkjet printer. There are quite a few Wamsley land patents on file -- I got one for Joseph, and there are also cards for Jacob, Samuel, Jesse, Matthew, James, John, and others. The process is slow, at least on my AOL browser, but it's pretty exciting to see those original documents online! This one mentions a Captain Wamsley -- I wonder which Wamsley this is?? No date is given for this claim, but I wonder if this could be our "infamous" Jonathan Wamsley again, filing false pension applications. Captain Wamsley's involvement here is that he was apparently promised half of the first payment, which I understand was the customary payment to a lawyer for filing the applications. Note that Radcliff's statement is said to be untrue, and a suit has been brought. It will be interesting to see this full document. Nancy Jackson, who offered this summary, said in her message that a copy of this 4-page document from the National Archives will be given in the next couple weeks to the HCPD librarian for filing with other pension records. By the way, I wonder if the Adam "Harpol" mentioned here is really Adam HARPER, an ancestor of Wanda and others in this group?? Mary Ann Revol. Pension Claim 12655: Weedon Hoffman, a store keeper in Weston, testified that William Radcliff told him that he had only served six months in the Revol. War. William Radcliff stated at age 16 or 17, he was a substitute for Adam Harpol and that he marched from Hardy Co., Virginia (now WV) to Winchester under Capt Stephenson and he guarded the British prisoners. He mentions Capt. Berry and Capt. James Lincoln; also a Col. Kennedy and a Col. Holmes plus a Capt. Wamsley. It was stated that Wamsley was to be given half of the first draw (pension?). William signed with a mark. W. Goling states the statement of Radcliff is untrue excpt for the contract with Wamsley and a suit against Radcliff had been instituted. ************************************* From: swamsley@concentric.net (Sandra Wamsley) Kathryn, Am posting this both to you and to the list. My husband's g-grandfather, William B. Wamsley was born Nov. 1808 VA - family tradition says WV. In 1839 he married Catherine Bridgewater of Orange Co. Indiana. He had probably worked for her father, Isaac Bridgewater, perhaps for several years, as Isaac has ag. help listed on his census entries each time before 1850. By 1848 they moved to Page Co. IA and William B. died there 1873. The persistence of the initial "B" also seems to point to your group, but I really don't know. I have been interested in learning more of the Wamsleys of Hamilton Co. since I read an article from "A History of Miami Township and Its Borders" and learned that William, b. 1785, had moved there in 1815. (I could send a copy of this article, if you've not seen it.) It all seems to fit what little we know of our William's times and events before his marriage and places him closer to Orange Co. You have a William B. married to Mary Ingraham, but no date of birth? And there are other connections to Indiana? Not surprising, given the location. Do you have a date of death for Mary? Children? Marthena 1858-? Do you think there is any possibility of a connection? Although we're missing some dates of death, I have fairly good information on these families, census, children, marriages and some burials in IA. Let me know what you think - I know there isn't much to go on here... I've been stuck in a rut with William B. for years! :) Thank you for any help or thoughts you can give. 1850 Hamilton Co. The die-hard WAMSLEY researchers may be aware of the following information, but others may find it interesting. The U.S. Geological Survey (7.5 minute series topographic) map of the Huttonsville, WV area shows several cemeteries, one of which must be the cemetery Mary Ann described in WamsleyWeb #13. All three cemeteries are near Becky Creek (same as Becca Creek?). Two are fairly close to the road that parallels the creek, and one is about 1.5 miles up Dry Run, on a ridge above 3000 feet elevation. Mary Ann listed the markers in one of these cemeteries, but I wonder if the other two are cataloged somewhere. I would like to send Mary Ann a copy of this map and maybe she could identify the cemetery her nephew visited. This map also shows the Old Brick Church Cemetery immediately south of the Huttonsville Correctional Center between routes 219 and 250 and on the Tygart Valley River. This must be the burial location for James WAMSLEY, Revolutionary War veteran and son of John WAMSLEY and Judith DORCUS. WAMSLEY: Arnold H., 66, of Seattle, date of death April 20, 1992. *************************** Subj: Philip WERMSLEY, Rev. War From: MAWamsley As I was looking up some information on Wamsleys who served in the Rev. War (for one of our new list members, Adele) I found an old list that I got from Wilbur Wamsley several years ago which shows 7 Wamsleys who served in that war. I'm pretty sure that 5 of those belong to our Randolph County, WV, group, but the other two I couldn't identify. Both of them are listed as WERMSLEY, a spelling I don't remember seeing before. One is William Wermsley, from Harrison Co., VA; the other is Philip Wermsley, from Rhode Island. So I decided to do a web search on this spelling variation — and amazingly, the one "hit" I got was an article that explains who Philip is. He was a former slave, also known as Philip Rodman (probably for another owner). This article, from the Providence, R.I., Journal-Bulletin (2/9/97) is a fascinating account of how Philip's descendant joined and later became president of her county DAR chapter on the basis of his service. If you want to read the whole story, go to http://www.projo.com/special/black/209bhs2.htm <A HREF="http://www.projo.com/special/black/209bhs2.htm">Special Report - Black History Month</A> I have lifted the small portions here that relate to the WERMLSEY name. Adele is looking for a William who fought in the Revolution — no mention in this article of a William, but I wonder if the William Wermsley on my list could also be from Rhode Island (a member of the slave-holding family that Philip was named for? or perhaps William was also a former slave?) Does anyone know of any WAMSLEY ancestors (by any spelling) in Rhode Island?? Mary Ann ----------------------------------------------- Excerpted from the Providence, R.I., Journal-Bulletin, 2/9/97: Nancy Goncalves, 60, grew up hearing stories about [her] family. . . One story that she did not hear, however, was about her "grandfather" who fought in the American Revolution. . . Goncalves has copies of her ancestor's pension records: Philip Rodman, alias Philip Wermsley, Providence, R. Island... Col. Christopher Lippitt's regiment, Rhode Island Line, October 1776, to November, 1777. "He was called Wermsley, too," Goncalves says, looking at the pension record. "We're not sure why. Sometimes when they were sold from one master to another, they (the master) would change their name." Rodman was granted his freedom -- that was the deal offered by Gen. George Washington -- after he fought. But he did not get his full pension. "He died a pauper, the poor man," she says. ************************* Till next time, have a great day and keep the e-mail coming!! Wanda
