    3. WAMSLEY~WEB NEWSLETTER #22 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The following is a letter I received in the mail: "Dear Wanda, Thank you for replying to my brother's E-mail. As he probably told you, I am not on the Internet, but I have seen one or two fo your newsletters. We are descendants of the West Virginia Wamsleys. Our great ggrandmother was a Wamsley. She was Sarah Ann Eliza Wamsley, the daughter of Solomon Wamsley, who was the son of jesse Wamsley and Sarah Mace. Sarah Ann Eliza Wamsley was married to John Sharp, who was killed in an accident in 1899, and Eliza thereafter married R. M. beal. My maiden name is Sharpe. I have found Sharps and Sharpes in census records. Burke's "American Families with British ancestry" shows Jesse as the son of Joseph and Joseph as the son of David, who left Lancashire and settled in America about 1725. Someone gave me the information that Joseph Wamsley was married to Eva Skidmore, the daughter of Abraham Skidmore. I do not know where she got her information. She also said that Joseph was married four times. I had gotten information that Sarah Mace was the daughter of Henry Mace and Ann Currence, but the will of Henry Mace does not show Sarah as a daughter. The same person who gave me the information about Joseph and Eva told me that Henry was not Sarah's father, but that Ebenezer Mace and Mary Stalnaker were her parents. As I understand it from her, Ebenezer and Henry were brothers. Again, I do not know where she got her information, and I have not found this information anywhere. I am, of course, interested in documenting who are sarah's parents. And I am also interested in learning whatever I can about the Wamsleys who are my ancestors and their spouses, etc. I would be interested in receiving your E-mail newsletter, but as I said, I am not on the Internet. Any information you can give me will be appreciated. sincerely, Mrs. Doris Jean S. Ferguson" **************************************************************************** ** ********** Anyone who sends me a stamped, self-addressed envelope can get a copy of our most recent newsletter. I had not planned to get into snail-mail newsletters, but I know that there are some people wanting to find out about the Wamsley families who do not have computers or an Internet service. My only request is that they try to send in some contribution, no matter how small, with each SASE they send to me. (examples: your ancestor line, one ancestor's dates and waht you know about him or her, a family story, a question about an ancestor, etc.) Requests can be sent to: 3500 Castlebury Drive, Chester, Virginia 23831. (One newsletter for each SASE, please. $.32 postage will be enough.) Thanks, Wanda *************************************************************** I keep past newsletters on my computer. If you want any of them, all you need to do is request the # you want. Wanda **************************************************************************** ** ***************** Subj: Wamsley - Forgot the text Date: 98-03-22 12:58:14 EST From: kathrynb@ix.netcom.com (kathrynb) Last night when I sent the desc chart, I forgot to add in the text that goes with Wm and his two sons Moses B and Wm B, so here it is. A number of years ago I was in contact with a guy who still lives in Cleves area who is desc from Moses B. I couldn't find my notes on him, I should re-contact him to see if he's found out anything in the intervening years. If you are interested in this line, let me know and I'll keep you posted if I find out anything new. William Wamsley RN36. (Evd 799) From History of Hamilton Co OH (Ford 1881) pg 326. William Maensley [note misspelling] was born in Virginia in 1785, where he married Nancy Bussel. She died, leaving six children, in Miami, in 1822. He came to this State in 1815, but had lived for a time previously in Boone county, Kentucky. His first Ohio settlement was made at North Bend, on the farm now the property of Charles Short. In politics he was an Old Line whig. He died in Ripley, Indiana, in 1837. He had six children: James, at present in Texas; Moses B., now married to Eunice Hayes; John B., married to Mary J. Ingraham; Eliza, the wife of David Jones, of Indiana; Samuel, married to Catharine Gronendike; and Stephen W., married to Mary Vangorder, and a resident of Indiana at the present time. (Evd 750) Original marriage bond at Boone Co KY courthouse has original signatures of William Wamsley and Moses S Bussell. Know all men by these presents that we William Wamsley and Moses Bustto [note that's the way it's spelled at this point] are ___ and firmly bound unto The Commonwealth of Kentucky in the penal sum of Fifty pounds current money payable to the said Commonwealth to which payment shall truly to be made we bind our selves each and every of our Heirs Executors and Admrs jointly & severally ___ by these presents sealed & dated this 23rd of May 1820. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas a license is desired fro a marriage intended between the said William Wamsley & Nancy Bussell now if it should always hereafter appear that there is no lawful cause to obstruct the said marriage then this obligation to be void and to remain in full force & virtue. [signed] William Wamsley, Moses S Bussell. (Evd 1426) In the Centennial History of Rush Co IN (Gary & Thomas 1921) vol 2 page 66+ is the bio of William's descendant (Wm-1, WmB-2, WmC-3, OrinP-4) Orin P Wamsley. There is some interesting info in this that bears looking into as it is not confirmed any place else that I have seen. It says "William B. Wamsley was born in Boone county, Kentucky, son of George W. Wamsley and wife, pioneers of that county, who later came across the river and settled in Hamilton county, where George W. Wamsley was killed by a log falling upon him and crushing his head during a pioneer ‘barn raising' in the neighborhood in which he lived." However, one thing makes this info suspect is that later in the article it has Elizabeth Wamsley (who married Wm Fred Rhinehart) as the daughter of the wrong person. When a more current "fact" is wrong, are the further back ones any more accurate? There have been no males by the name of George carried down in the family, so where did this come from? After her marriage to Samuel Wamsley she lived in the Horse Shoe for a number of years, then moved to Oklahoma where she still lives." James-2 Wamsley (progenitor) son of Jame-1 and Margaret (Buchanon) Wlmsley or Wamsley, was born 29 Sep 1790 in Finlane, Killesher Parish, Townshp of Enniskillen, County of Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. He arrived in Phildelphia between 1800-1804. Vocation: weaver. He married Elizabeth Benson in 1814. Four children: John 1815-1896, George W 1817-1908, Barzilla 1820-1842, and Emily 1827-1900. Without going into the reasons, I have also eliminated the Wamsleys that are in Adams Co Ohio. William just can't fit in anyplace on that family. Too bad since there some good stories on one of the maternal lines. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Moses B Wamsley RN 2782 (Evd 799) From History of Hamilton Co OH (NOT Ford 1881- I'm not sure where this one is from) pg 326. Moses B Maensley [note misspelling] was born in Boone county, Kentucky, in 1814, and was shile very young, brought by his parents to North Bend, Ohio. He has help the ofices of constable and treasurer for his township, and has also been steward in the Methodist Episcopal church, where he has a membership. In politics he is a strong Republican. In 1846 he built a warehouse at Cleves and began the buying of g rain, which he followed twenty years, when he abandoned it and took up farming. Twelve years previous to the above date he was in business on the river between Cincinnati and New Orleans. It took an entire year in those days to make one trip. In 1839 he was married to Miss Eunice Hayes, of this township. They have had nine children: Anderson B., married to Mary H. Lewis; Anna H., and Alvin C.: James F., married to Anna Markland; Abiatha B., the wife of Otto Low, of Indiana; Fanny M., John H., Arabella, and Chalon G. Evd 536) From History of Hamilton Co OH (Ford 1881) gives more information. Moses B Wamsley was born in Kentucky, in 1814, and two years afterwards was brought to Whitewater township by his parents. He became, in due time, a farmer and grain buyer, and has been for twenty-five years, one of the most extensive dealers in this part of the country. In 1830 he was married to Miss Eunice Hayes, of the well known pioneer family. They have nine children - five sons and four daughters, viz: Anderson B., Anna H., Alvin C., James Finley, Abitha B., Mary Frances, Job H., Arabella, and Chalon G. Those deceased are Anna and Albin. Mr Wamsley resides in Miami township, and is one of the prominent and substantial citizens of the county. The only representative residing in Whitewater township, is Anderson, the eldest son, who was born in the year 1840. He resided with his parents until the time of his marriage, in 1867, to Miss Mary H. Lewis. To Mr and Mrs Wamsley were born seven children - four sons and three daughters: Joseph L., Benjamin B., Anna, Clara, Edward H., Mary Alice, and George L. Mary Alice died in infancy. Mr Wamsley is one of the enterprising your farmers of Whitewater. He was a soldier in the war of 1861-5 for more than three years. He enlisted as a private, but received three commissions as a first and second lieutenant and captain. He was in numerous severe engagements, but fortune favored him and he escaped unhurt, and returned to his home crowned with all the honor to which our gallant sons were justly entitled. He has been assessor of his township various times, thus bespeaking for him the full confidence of the people. Mrs Wamsley is an earnest member of the Presbyterian church and a staunch supporter of the faith. Mr Wamsley is no associated with any church organization, but ever favors the right and is a firm advocate of law and order. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - William B Wamsley RN 2783 Centennial History of Rush Co IN (1921) (SLC 93491818#4, my Evd 1426) has a bio of his grandson (pg 66+) which says that William B Wamsley "grew to manhood in Hamilton Co and after his marriage located at Oxford in Butler Co whence he presently moved to Cincinnati and was serving as sheriff of Hamilton Co at the time of his death there in 1851. His widow survived him but a few months dying in 1852 leaving four children." There is more on the siblings descendants, but there is at least one error because he attributes Elizabeth who married Wm F Rhinehart as being one of them, and that is wrong as Elizabeth and Wm Fred Rhinehart are my ancestors. - - - - - Kathryn Rhinehart Bassett (Pasadena CA) kathryn.bassett@switchboard.net "genealogy is my bag" "GH is my soap" http://pw2.netcom.com/~kathrynb/kathryn.htm +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: s2ee@juno.com To: wamsleyweb@AOL.COM NOTICED in the line of Jacob Wamsley & wife Minerva Hamilton child #3 Jared Lee Wamsley b. fEb 1854 d Jan 1916 there was no wife listed. Her parents were John Wamsley(info unknown) and Aletha Snelson. Now, the confusing part for me.. Aletha Snelson was born in 1868 to James A Snelson and Catherine Channel. Catherine was born to Elizabeth Channel and (first name unknown) WAMSLEY. both Catherine and Elizabeth are from Huttonsville,Randolph cnty,Wv. Elizabeth and Mr. Wamsley were married in @1823. It appears that the spelling "Walmsley" and "Wamsley" were sometimes used by the same person. My grandfather, John Henry Walmsley, used the spelling "Wamsley" on his Marriage certificate signature in 1884. Today we pronounce our Walmsley surname with the first "L" almost silent.
