WAMSLEY~WEB NEWSLETTER #2 Any question or any other contribution is welcome!!! ------- Subj: Re: WAMSLEY family Date: 97-08-23 22:41:51 EDT From: dphares@traveller.com (Richard Phares) Wanda: I found one error in your data. You have Jonathan Wamsley, son of William, married to 1. Hannah Newton 2. Elizabeth Light. There are 2 Jonathan's. Jonathan, son of Matthew, is the one who married Elizabeth Light. This family remained in Randolph Co. Jonathan and Hannah fled to TX to escape prosecution after Jonathan and his brother-in-law were caught forging veteran's pension applications and as far as I know he never returned to WV. Regards Dick ------- I would like to know more about the marriage on the first line of Wm Robinson & Margaret Roach nee SEE. Let me hear from you. Best, Hal McCawley ------- Subj: Wamsleys Date: 97-09-12 01:15:00 EDT From: MAWamsley Wanda -- I was just browsing the Anne Arundel County website for the first time, thinking about placing a query, when I discovered that you have already done so. Great!! If you get any worthwhile responses, could you let me know? Thanks so much -- Mary Ann Note: Some of our Wamsley ancestors lived in Anne Arundel, Maryland. John Wamsley, Sr., son of John Wamsley and Abigail Smith of England, lived in Anne Arundel about the mid 1700's and married Judith Dorcus there in 1751. Does anyone have any information on the family during this time period? ------- Subj: Re: Wamsleys Date: 97-09-15 16:32:23 EDT From: MAWamsley Dick Phares was the first person I contacted on the internet genealogy forums about 3 years ago when I knew only the sketchiest information about my husband's Wamsleys. It was his research that really got me started on this in a big way. I guess you know that his Wamsley database is online at the ARFHS website -- I look at it from time to time for answers to specific questions. The ARFHS librarian, Madeline Crickard, says Phyllis Daniels of Beverly, West Virginia is the recognized expert on the family. Trouble was, when I talked to her, she had loaned all her Wamsley data to another researcher for a while and didn't have the resources on hand to look anything up. Note: You can get to the ARFHS site by searching under "Allegheny Regional Family History Society". For $20 a year, you can join and receive a quarterly newsletter. Membership also makes it possible to access information at the ARFHS site that is for members only. ------- Wanda -- It is really interesting to speculate about this Wamsley "migration". Since I started corresponding with Sandra Wamsley in CO, I have found information in my own database and from her notes and elsewhere about various Wamsleys, some of whom I can't identify, who went west from WV. I'll attach a key passage from one of her messages at the end of this one. I think there has to be a link between the ancestor she can't trace (William B.) and our Wamsleys, because our Daniel (Joseph's half brother) ended up out there with her people; his son married one of their Wamsley women. As I recall, one of Joseph's sons went, too, and possibly another Daniel (though I'm not sure if there were really two or if the information I have is misleading). I didn't remember (if I ever knew) about your George Fisher W. going to IN. It is certainly likely that there were other Wamsleys out there that they were joining. I'd really like to be able to help Sandra find the parents of her William B., but so far don't see the link -- do you?? Here's the info about Sandra's search: "I'm stuck with my husband's great-grandfather, William B. Wamsley, b. 09 June 1808 in "VA" per later census. Family tradition places him in WV. He married Catherine BRIDGEWATER 09 May 1839 in Orange Co. IN and appears there on the 1840 census - the earliest I have for him. They moved c1848 to Page Co. IA where William died 17 Dec. 1873. William and Caty had 9 children: Rhoda Jane Mildred Victoria? Lydia Ellen *Jeremiah Carter Wamsley Elvina L. Isaac M. Marthena Nancy Elizabeth Mary E. Jeremiah C. was Donald's grandfather, but if there's a significance to the CARTER name, I've yet to catch up with it. Most of the names are from the BRIDGEWATER family, or can be found there. Aunt Nan married G.M. Wamsley, probably the son b. c1832 of Daniel WAMSLEY and Ailcey CONRAD of Clarksburg, Harrison Co. WV, who also moved to Page Co. Daniel was born 1805, so it is tempting to think he was a brother to William B., but "their" side thinks not, and I simply do not know. I've found a Thomas Wamsley in Jackson Co, IN, born between 1800-1810 also, but do not have any further info on him. (He was on the 1840 census also.) Then there is a little article about a William Wamsley who moved his family to Hamilton Co. OH about 1815 from KY, having started in WV. The descendants of this William use the middle initial "B" a lot, but no idea if they're related. The timing is good, though, if this happened to be William B's father. Maybe you can put this little puzzle in your Wamsley newsletter! Mary Ann ------- My grandfather, Jasper Newton Wamsley, was born in 1873 during his parent's (George Fisher Wamsley and S. Margaret Talbott) move to Indiana (according to him). His oldest brother, Elisha T. Wamsley, was born in 1867, so there may have been 3 or 4 children older than Jasper living at the time of the move to Indiana. In 1878, he (age 5) and his family returned to West Virginia and settled in Huttonsville. I do not know the reason they returned. At least one child was born to George and Margaret after their return to West Virginia. George died in 1881 at the age of 36; I have not been able to find out why he died. Can anyone add any information to this? Thanks, Wanda ------- Subj: Wamsley info Date: 97-09-18 11:45:20 EDT From: MAWamsley Wanda -- One of my online friends (not a Wamsley researcher, but always looking out for info for me) just got a copy of the book "The Harts of Randolph County". She sent me names and dates of the Wamsleys mentioned in it. I could identify all but one -- a Hazel Wamsley. I have two Hazels, one of which has no spouse given, and she is in your line. Here is what Shirley sent me -- do you think this is your Hazel? The dates seem right: Pg 82: Guy Chase Rowan b. 1900 m. Hazel Pearl Wamsley Aaron (widow) Dec. 1925. at Beverly, WV. Div. no ch. Mary Ann ------- Subj: George Fisher Wamsley Date: 97-09-25 01:15:18 EDT From: MAWamsley Wanda -- Shirley Toohey, my online "buddy" in CA who is always looking out for WAMSLEY info, sent me this tonight. At first I didn't recognize the names, but then realized that the "George" is your George Fisher Wamsley. I haven't studied this well enough yet, along with my existing info on Talbotts, to tell whether this makes clear who Margaret's father is. I don't have parents listed for her in my database -- do you?? Shirley writes: "Found this from Barbour Co WV Book of Deeds 1853-1919 Will Books 1 & 1 1/2 1839-89 pg 246 (Will or deed pages 310-312) will dated 2/24/1876 probated 5/29/1880 Elisha Talbott Barbour Co, WV wife Sarah, sons Wm. C. Robert R., Elam, Edwin S., Isaac D., Irvin F., Dau: Josephine, Eliz wife of Addison Reed, Margaret wife of GEORGE WAMSLEY, Angelina wife of Wm. B. Woodford, Exec: Isaac D. & Robert R. Talbott. witnesses E D Talbott wife 1000. and household goods, $400 to Josephine and rest equally divided to children." It looks to me like Josephine, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Angelina are all his daughters; he is naming Josephine separately (and probably giving her more) because she is not married. Does that make sense ? It's late! Would this make an item for the newsletter? Mary Ann ------- Wanda -- I'm so glad! I have quite a few Talbotts in my database, because they are connected to my Halls (my mother-in-law's line). But Shirley Toohey has a much greater interest in this family and should have more. I'll get back to her and see if she can help fill in the blanks in the info I have -- I am missing some pieces that would allow me to be certain where your Margaret fits. Will let you know what I find out. Mary Ann -------- I hope that something in here has given you all some new information. Till next time, Wanda
