Wanda **************************************************************************** ** ************* Subj: Early Walmsleys in MD From: MAWamsley Some of us (at least tentatively) trace our Wamsley line back to John and Abigail Smith Wamsley, who are said to be the immigrants in this line, settling in Ann Arundel Co., MD, sometime between 1725 and 1748 (do we have a more definite date?) As I was browsing the "special collections" file at the MD Archives website, I found a record that shows that there were some WALMSLEYS in Maryland more than 50 years earlier than that. The record, which can be found in Dr. Carson Gibb's supplemental list of early settlers, is for a "Martha Walmsley. . . Late Marchant, wife of Thomas Walmsley by 1669, when she had completed her service." I can't tell what part of MD these Walmsleys lived in, but that might be determined by looking at the microfilm of the record (citations given). She died in 1844 in La Porte, IN. I'd love to see if these are related CORNWELLS and more importantly, what relationship, if any, they may have to my WILLIAM WELLS or possibly his wife Sarah Prater Wells?? 2) LAMONT -- This is a total longshot. My grandmother's name was MARIE ANNA LAMONT -- she was born about 1900 supposedly in Belgium. We know she married ca 1918 to James NEIL in New York, New York, divorcing him a year later in DENVER, COLORADO and marrying my grandfather William C. I JUST the day before I contacted you, found the ELLEDGE WAMSLEY connection. James and Elizabeth (Wamsley) Elledge's daughter Fanny Jane married ELIJAH WELLS. The WELLS are my direct line. The Morgan/Floyd County area of Kentucky was not that large, and almost everyone is related to everyone else somehow. THEN many of these families migrated on to the Coles/Edgar/Douglas County area of Illinois, including my WILLIAM WELLS b. ca 1806 in VA who married in 1827 in Floyd Co., KY to Sarah PRATER b. ca 1810 in Floyd Co., KY. William died in 1887 near Tuscola, Douglas Co., IL. His son David lived in Humboldt, Coles Co., IL in 1870 before he migrated to Bosque Co., TX.] [From WAMSLEY newsletter #26 - MAY WAMSLEY, b. May 28, 1876, Humboldt, Coles, Illinois; d. May 26, 1958, Denver, Colorado; m.] It appears we may connect to the INGRAM family mentioned also in connection to the WAMSLEY family. William and Sarah WELLS' daughter Lucinda b. ca 1828 married 1) Daniel B. GILMORE and 2) ISAAC INGRAM. The "given" name of DORCUS is used repeatedly in the PRATER family -- which makes me wonder about the surname DORCUS I see in the Wamsley. I didn't mention SMITH - which plays a big role in the PRATER family too. I have a NANCY WAMSLEY b. ca 1849 who married Thomas W. The cemetery Jean referred to is the one that I catalogued in W~Web # 13. Jesse and family are buried there, but there is no stone for Joseph. It is clear, though, that the plot was originally bigger than the area covered by the existing stones, so I assume that there are a number of currently unmarked graves. The most interesting thing Jean mentioned, though, was about the family saying that when she did not find Joseph's grave, she "had not gone far enough into the woods". I am sure that when I first heard about this mountaintop graveyard, the person who told me about it said that there was another grave "in the woods" and that he had seen it. I will try to find out more about this and see if we can locate that grave to determine whether it might be Joseph. I realize, as Jean reminded us in an earlier item, that we have no conclusive proof of the connection between our Randolph County Wamsleys and the ones in Ann Arundel Co., MD. In fact, I have a note from a now deceased family member who had done some research which says, " "...my guess is that Joseph came from the Shenandoah Valley by way of Monterey or thereabout." I don't know what he based this on, but he must have had some clue that led him to that conclusion. We need to keep an open mind on this! Mary Ann **************************************************************************** ** ************* The following information is from Tom Wamsley, not a subscriber to the newsletter, but a West Virginia Wamsley descendant: Wanda, Sorry I took so long to get back to you. Andrew Marcellus Wamsley is also my gg-grandfather. My line is Andrew M. >> Jacob Webster >> Thomas Andrew >> Thomas Andrew jr >> me. In the attached article, you will see who all are buried at the cementary on the family farm. There is also another cementary about 1 1/2 miles south of the farm officially named the Wamsley cementary. This is probably the cementary that you mentioned with Tom Bell. I am embarrassed to say that I have never been to it. The Brick Church Cementary that you mentioned is about 6-7 miles south of the farm, located beside the state medium-security prison at Huttonsville. The name of the river in this valley is the Tygart Valley River, named after one of the first families in the valley, later killed by indians.
