WAMSLEY~WEB NEWSLETTER #29 :.:.:.:.:.: Always welcome --> any corrections or additions to anything printed here. **************************************************************************** ** ********* IMPORTANT: Kathryn Bassett, one of the people who participates in this newsletter, has started a Wamsley listserv. Now we have one more way that we can exchange family information; we'll probably find even more people researching Wamsley and related families. I started this newsletter as much for all of you as for myself. It is my way of saying "thank you" to all of you who helped me find my Wamsley roots, and passing this generosity on to others. I will continue doing the newsletter as long as there is an interest. However, I will change the format a little - each issue will be organized a little different, more like the last one (the Memorial Day Issue). Continue to send in your contributions and I will organize them according to subject matter with misc comments, inquiries and questions at the end. Kathryn has archived the newsletters, so anyone who wants back issues can either get them from me or on the internet: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl As always, thank you for everything you send in. Let me know what subjects you are interested in covering. Also, send in anything you know about the religion(s) of our ancestors and their religious practices. Future topics: -- How our ancestors earned a living -- Places our ancestors lived -- Our ancestors and government service/ politics See you on the new listserv!! Wanda For those of you who have not heard from Kathryn yet, you can get to the listserv at this address and, like the others, type in "subscribe". Walmesley; Sholley, County Lancaster; descended from Richard Walmesley, Esq., of Sholley, or Sholay, second son of Thomas Walmesley, who was the son of Thomas Walmesley. (Henry VII) 3. Walmesley; Westwood House, County Lancaster; a branch of Walmesley, of Sholley; descended from John Walmesley, second son of Richard Walmesley, Esq., of Sholley. Also related to the Gerard family. 4. Walmesley; Coldcoats Hall, and of Eaves Hall, within Wiswall, County Lancaster, afterwards of Bashall hall, County York; descended from Robert Walmesley, Esq., of Coldcoats; brother of Sir Thomas Walmesley, Knt., of Dunkenhalgh, County Lancaster, and third son of Thomas Walmesley. (Henry VIII) Died: 1584 April 17. The male line terminated with Richard Walmesley, Esq., of Bashall Hall, Coldcoats Hall, and Eaves Hall, whose daughter and heir, Margaret Walmesley married Hugh Hughes Lloyd, Esq., of Gwerclas, County Merioneth, and Plymog, County Denbigh in 1766. Also related to the Grimshaw family of New House, County Lancaster; Ferrers family of Bashall, County York; and Talbot family of Bashall, County York. The second part of this will be in the next newsletter due to lack of space. When a copyholder (one holding land in copyhold, which was the holding of land by right of being recorded) was giving up his tenancy he would deliver a rod or staff to the lord who would pass it along to the new tenant in view of witnesses. Freeholders made the delivery with a piece of turf, a clod, or the ring from the door and handed it directly to the new owner." **************************************************************************** ** ************** Subj: Genserv Lookups From: dphares@traveller.com (Richard L. The reason for this is that results of a surname search can run into hundreds of pages. Genserv has more than 12 million records in their database and it usually takes less than a minute to get the results back by e-mail which can then be forwarded to the one who requested it. If you then find a record in which you desire more data, a followup message will give additional information such as ancestors or descendants and name and address of submitter. She is Madasonia Wamsley, who married Spencer W. STURM; the article says that Madasonia is a daughter of David B. and Mary (Bartlett) Wamsley, granddaughter of David and Sarah (Delay) Wamsley. Madasonia and her sister Celia married brothers. The article, by Jack Sandy Anderson, is about Jesse Sturm (1809-1885) and his life in Harrison Co., WV, as "a carpenter, cooper, millwright, miller, stonemason, inventor, builder of bridges and flatboats, and an unpaid preacher of the Gospel." About Celia and Madasonia Wamsley, the article says: ". . . [Spencer Sturm's] first wife, Madasonia Wamsley, was a sister of his brother Felix's first wife; they were daughters of David B. and Mary (Bartlett) Wamsley, of Big Elm Farm, and were considered heiresses of their day, for they and their siblings shared in their father's large estate." If anyone would like a copy of the whole article, let me know and I'll be glad to send it via snail mail. Here are some family reports that add the information gleaned from this article to what I already knew about the STURM and WAMSLEY families. I have more on earlier generations of Sturms and associated families if anyone else is interested.
