SRC: 1, 2 - - - - - - - - - - "Richard Stout was born in 1604 (other accounts give 1615) in Nottinghamshire, England, son of John Stout. He ran away from home, possibly because his father was unhappy about a relationship he had with a woman below his standing. Richard joined or was impressed into the British Navy where he served for seven years. At New Amsterdam (now New York City area) he left his ship and through bearing arms became a Netherlands subject. In 1643 he owned a plantation that covered a large section of New (East) Jersey. He married Penelope Van Princess (sic) in 1644. At the time of his marriage he was about 40 and Penelope was 22. They left New Amsterdam in 1645 and took up their home in Gravesend, Long Island, and became prominent land holders. Their final change was moving to New Jersey with other settlers and who together founded the village of Middletown. They became important citizens and here ended their days. Richard died in 1705." SRC: 6 - - - - - - - - - - "One of the best known chapters of [Monmouth's] early history is the story of Penelope Stout, believed to be the first white woman to set foot on [Monmouth] county soil. During the first half of the 17th century - the exact date is unknown - a ship from Holland was wrecked on Sandy Hook. Among those aboard was Penelope Van Princis, whose husband had become ill on the long sea voyage. The passengers and crew reached shore safely, but hearing of an Indian attack they set out on foot for New York (New Amsterdam), leaving the sick man and his wife behind. Smith's History of New Jersey, published in 1765, relates that a party of Indians found the couple and immediately killed the man. They then mangled the woman, and left her for dead. After hiding for several days in a hollow tree, Penelope was found by a friendly Indian who nursed her back to health. A rescue party found her and brought her to New Amsterdam - now New York - and a short time later she married an Englishman, Richard Stout. Penelope and Richard later returned to New Jersey and had 10 children. The nameless Indian who saved Penelope's life was a frequent visitor and friend. According to the tale, he later alerted the community to a potential confrontation with another band of marauding natives, probably from New York. Most accounts agree that Penelope lived to be 110 and had some 502 descendants at the time of her death, in either 1712 or 1732..." SRC: 5 - - - - - - - - - - "Penelope's origins are in some doubt. There have been suggested lineages, but not proof. Someone needs to check out the deeds in Maryland to see if the John that everyone lists is the same one that came to Augusta Co. If he sold out in Maryland and then arrived in Augusta in the same time frame, then that may be the correct line. But letters of descendents in the late 1880s suggest Virginia was his origin. She was living with her daughter Elizabeth in Cedar County, Iowa when she died. Children of Jane Wamsley and John Neely are: i. ELIZABETH3 NEELY, b. 1809; d. 1868; m. NOAH LAMBERT. ii. LEWIS NEELY. iii. POLLY NEELY. Children of Jane Wamsley and James Lambert are: iv. NANCY3 LAMBERT. v. LUCINDA LAMBERT. We'll just have to keep searching for her connection to one of the Wamsley families! **************************************************************************** ** **************** Virginia State Archives is actually part of the Library of Virginia and the URL for LVA is: http://leo.vsla.edu/ http://www.vsla.edu/archives/genie.html Events that occurred in the portion of Virginia that is now West Virginia are recorded in the Archives of the Division of Culture and History, Capital Complex, Cultural Center, 1900 Kanawha Boulevard East, Charleston, WV 25305-0300. http://www.wvlc.wvnet.edu/history/historyw.html http://www.wvlc.wvnet.edu/history/wvsamenu.html Another good website for VA genealogy with lots of links is: http://www.virginiagenealogy.com/index.html **************************************************************************** ** ***************** Subj: Wamsleys in Ohio Date: 98-06-04 12:56:34 EDT From: MJLeenstra To: Wamsleyweb Hi Wanda, I wondered why Isaac & Leah (Stout) Wamsley brought their family from NJ to KY, then on to Adams County, Ohio. I came across this in "History of Adams County," p. 422: "First Settlers of Greene Township" "The following are a few of the first settlers of Greene Township as obtained from the meager source to which we have had access. The first white settler was Obadiah Stout, who was a native of New Jersey, and served through the Revolutionary War. Mr. Stout had ten children, the youngest two, named Obadiah and John, were scalped by the Indians while he lived at Graham's Station, Kentucky. He moved to Greene Township in the year 1796, and settled on the east, or Puntenney's Fork of Stouts Run. In 1796 Obadiah Stout, Jr., grandson of Obadiah Stout, Sen., was born, being the first while child born in Greene Township...." Looks like Leah & Isaac may have followed or accompanied relatives of Leah's first to Kentucky and then to Ohio. A chain and a rod and a pole are measurements of length. A chain is a unit of length equal to 66 feet (a chain is also a tool with which one measures) A rod is a unit of length equal to 5.50 yards or 16.5 feet (a rod is also a tool with which one measures) A pole is a varying unit of length, especially one which measures 16 and 1/2 feet OR a unit of area equal to a square rod (or perch) The above information was obtained from Annette E. Wetzel via the Southside Virginia Listserv. **************************************************************************** ** ************ Researching With Church Records http://www.familytreemaker.com/issue5.html **************************************************************************** ** *************** WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE??
