Well, shoot! I found an error in my Wamsley connection. About 20 years ago, I knew that my William Frederick Rhinehart married Jennie Elizabeth Wamsley. While searching for her parents, I concluded that they were Samuel Wamsley and Catherine Groendyke, because they had a daughter Eliza J about the right age, and there were no other candidates. A number of years later, I found a bio for the grandson (Orin) of Samuel's brother William that had some discrepencies in William's parentage, so when that same bio said that Orin's father had three sisters, including Elizabeth who married William Rhinehart, I assumed that was just another discrepency and never did more about it. Meanwhile, I researched Catherine Groendyke's line and ultimately had about 50 Dutch ancestors on that line. Well, this week, a descendant of Samuel's wrote, and in the process of answering some of his questions (he's new to genealogy), I reviewed all my sources in the Wamsley folder, and found this old date. I did some re-analyzing, including some census work, and have come to the conclusion that I had the wrong brother for Jennie's father. That wipes out the Dutch line, and now I have an Ingram line to pursue. Since, in years past, I posted links showing Samuel as the father, I need to now give the links that have now changed. Samuel is now linked from: http://bassett.net/secondsite/kathryn-p/p153.shtml#i7612 And William C is now linked from: http://bassett.net/secondsite/kathryn-p/p1.shtml#i18 Oh well, finding that you've made a wrong connection happens to everyone sooner or later. The lesson to be learned, is that you MUST go back over the research you did 10, 15, 20 years ago, and see if your conclusions are still the same. -- Kathryn Rhinehart Bassett (Pasadena CA) "Genealogy is my bag" "GH is my soap" kathryn@bassett.net http://bassett.net

Surnames: Wamsley, Shinn, Childers Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BVVBAIB/203.2 Message Board Post: Since I first posted this query, I have found additional information about Abner. In Mason County Death Records, 1853-1916, Vol. III published by the West Virginia Genealogical Society, Inc., Abner Wamsley’s death record was found. He died at the age of 70 on 11 Nov 1868 in Mason County, WV of paralysis. His father is listed as David Wamsley and his mother as Sarah. This is some evidence that my gg grandfather is the same Abner enumerated in Harrson County from possibly 1810 to 1840. I am currently trying to verify this. Abner Wamsley of Harrison County was married to Lavina Shinn in 1823. She was granted a divorce from him in 1853. Abner did not appear in court. The last time Abner appears in the Harrison County census is 1840. By 1832, he had sold all of the land that his father, David, had deeded to him. ( I have posted transcriptions of three of these land transfers on the Harrison County WVGenWeb site on RootsWeb.com) My Abner appears for the first time in Mason County in 1850 with Nancy and children. The obituary of Benjamin Franklin Wamsley, Abner's son, indicates that Nancy's maiden name was Childers (I have no verification). A working hypothesis is that Abner deserted Lavina Shinn, moved to Mason County in the early 1840s, and hooked up with Nancy Childers there. If you have any insight or evidence to support or disprove my hypothesis, I would be really pleased to find out. Thanks, Jan
Can someone shed some light on this Wamsley? Thanks, Wanda in Virginia The following information came from the Works Progress Administration of Virginia Historical Inventory. The Hawkin S. Wamsley place, also called "Green Branch", was located near Goldvein, Virginia. It was owned by William Edward Hickerson until his death in 1865. His daughter Jane inherited 101 acres and the house at the death of William Hickerson, and later married Hawkin S. Wamsley. A man by the name of Oscar Wamsley lived nearby.

My immediate family linage comes from Blackburn but I have not been very successful finding recent relatives from England. My linage is through my grandfather John A Walmsley and his father John T Walmsley and my grandfathers mother was either Elizabeth or Mary. John T Walmsley came across to America either in the late 1800's or early 1900's and worked in Detriot for Ford's Motor Company. My grandfather arrived in Detriot when he was 12 then moved to Windsor Canada when he married Gwendolyn Elsom. They had three children Irene, Shirley (my mother) and Charles.
