This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: CathyMonkman Surnames: Wamsley Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wamsley/222.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am descended from Arthur Wilson Wamsley's brother, Philip Broster Wamsley. Arthur was the eldest of 7 children. Arthur was born in 1869 and died in 1948. He married twice. He was a successful financier and his home was Staplehurst, Kent (now a BUPA hospital I believe). His siblings were: Lucy Wilson Wamsley b 1871, d 1947; Philip Broster Wamsley b 1875 d 1913; Margaret Ward Wamsley; William Bunting Wamsley b 1876 d 1946; Sarah Maydew Wamsley and Robert Wilson Wamsley who was born in 1880. Lucy was a nurse before WWI, then became a government inspector of hospitals until her retirement; Philip was in the merchant navy and died in Rio de Janeiro after catching a fever; Margaret married the American artist Alphaeus P Cole; William was a medical missionary, was a medical officer on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and was awarded the Victoria Cross; Sarah was a Suffragette; Robert became a tax adviser to the South African government. Their father was a Wesleyan Methodist Minister, John Maydew Wamsley who was born in Leek in 1837 and died in Scarborough in 1920. John Maydew Wamsley was also one of 7 children as follows: Mary Anne Wamsley, b 1824; Louise Silbury Wamsley b 1827; Sarah Wamsley b 1829, Philip Broster Wamsley b 1832 (also a Methodist Minister); Martha Wamsley b 1834 and James Wamsley b 1840. Their father was Uriah Wamsley of Leek, silk manufacturer. Uriah was married to Sarah Walmsley (confusing - spelling very similar). Uriah died in 1842 leaving Sarah with a young family. Uriah's father was Philip Wamsley, a silk manufacturer of Leek who died in 1839. Philip married twice, firstly Mary who died in 1822, then Sarah. Uriah is descended from Philip and Mary. Uriah had two step sisters and a step brother born to Philip and his second wife: Elizabeth who married Thomas Bowers; Margaret who married Thomas Jewsbury; and (another)Philip who married Mary Ann Clowes in 1850. We have discovered that Philip and Mary Ann Clowes divorced in 1860, and also that year Philip was declared bankrupt. He was also a silk manufacturer. He fled to America by 1870 and set up a business in New York. To cut out the extras and return to Arthur: Philip Wamsley married Mary in Leek; they had Uriah who married Sarah Walmsley in Macclesfield; they had John Maydew Wamsley who married Jane Wilson in Bridlington; they had Arthur Wilson Wamsley. The first Philip from Leek remains a mystery. He and both his wives are buried in the churchyard at St Edward Confessor Church, Leek. He was a partner in Gaunt, Wardle and Wamsley silk firm and when he died he left a lot of land in Leek. He was wealthy but most of it went to his second family so Uriah's branch ended up quite poor - although Arthur made up for it later with some very successful work as a financier. But who was Philip? We have found no records of him anywhere, no birth, no siblings, no parents and it is odd that he could be so well off and own so much land and there be no record of where he is from. I think he might be connected to one Charles Wamsley who went to America because Charles was also from Leek. Does anyone know? Rumours in the family have always said he was descended from the Huguenots but we do not know. No need to send me anything to do with the Hastings as that is not my branch. Thanks.
