    1. RE: Joseph Henry Wamsley-England/Georgia/Texas
    2. Dear List: Am looking for present-day descendants of my great great-grandfather, Joseph Henry Wamsley, born between 1815-1825 in (we think) Lancashire, England. He married an Eliza Summersgill abt. 1850-52 in same area. They had four daughters: Selina, b. 1852; Emma, b. 5/18/54; Alice, b 9/16/56; and Rosalta, b 1/10/59. All girls were born in England, presumably around the Lancashire area. Around 1860 Joseph Henry and Eliza immigrated to America and settled for a short time in Columbus, GA, along with four or five of Eliza Summersgill's brothers. There they had three boys: Thomas Edwin, Henry, and Manuel. Then Joseph Henry and Eliza and their children moved on to the Austin, Travis Co., Texas area. Joseph Henry and Eliza lived in the area around Austin until their deaths. Is anyone out there related to this family? Do you know of anyone who is? If so please contact me at: pdugan1217@aol.com. Thanks...Pat Dugan

    2. Jean Loudin
    3. I am more inclined to think that Jesse Wamsley's wife was a daughter of Ebenezer Mace and Anne Currence because I have the Henry Mace will and if there was only one Henry, he did not have a daughter. In fact he left stuff to a bound boy, namely Nicholas Wilmoth, who married a daughter Elizabeth of Jacob Riffle who went by the name of Nicholas Mace instead of Wilmoth. I have a question mark by Ebenezer as I have not proven him to be the right father, but I really do not think Henry is correct. One problem is that I have never found the marriage record of Jesse Wamsley and Sarah Mace to prove that she was a Mace. All I have is tradition. Anyone have any proof anywhere other than what I have? Namely my great grandmother telling me she was a Mace? Jean

    2. The following question is about Sarah Mace (11 January 1796 - 19 September 1857), wife of Jesse Wamsley (11 March 1795 - 10 June 1857). Phyllis Daniels in the Fall 2001 issue of the Allegheny Regional Ancestors says that Sarah's parents are Ann Currence and Henry Mace. I have also seen Ebenezer Mace and Mary Stalnaker as her parents. Does anyone know which is correct? Wanda -- Below are a few notes on some of the children you listed for this family, based on things I've gathered from various sources. I have no idea which ones actually belong to Matthew and Sarah, but several of them are certainly confusing. > Children of MATTHEW WAMSLEY and SARAH CURRENCE are: > 2. i. JONATHAN WAMSLEY, b. 10 September 1786, Beverly, Randolph County, > Virginia; d. 21 May 1872, Randolph , West Virginia. Not likely a son of Matthew and Sally if their marriage date and his birth date are correct -- they weren't married until 1788. "William Currence the Pioneer" (a manuscript at the Randolph Co. Historical Soc. library in Beverly) says that Jonathan who married Elizabeth Light was the son of John Wamsley, Jr., not Matthew. Chart from Curtis Chewning in Allegheny Regional Family History Society Ancestor Charts (Vol. 1, p. 16) says Jonathan was the son of William Wamsley and Susannah Watson. A note in the Wamsley file at the Randolph County Historical Library says Jonathan is "probably the son of James". The Jonathan Wamsley who married Hannah NEWLON is the one who got into trouble by filing false claims for Rev. War service on behalf of a lot of people, mostly in Lewis Co. He fled to Texas to escape prosecution and may never have returned to WV. I doubt if his death date is known. It would make sense for him to be the son of James, because my records show that James (1762-1842) died in Lewis County. I suspect there are two or more Jonathans, and that their birth and death dates have been confused. > 3. ii. ISAAC INGRAM WAMSLEY, b. Aft. 1788; d. 29 December 1862, Truby Run, Upshur County, Virginia. It seems like it would make more sense for Isaac to be a son of Matthew's brother Thomas Wamsley and Margaret "Comfort" INGRAM. There is some info on Isaac Wamsley of Truby Run in the HISTORY OF THE SAGO COMMUNITY at http://www.wvculture.org/history/agrext/sago.html > 5. vi. SARAH ANN WAMSLEY, b. January 1796; d. 15 July 1842. Some sources say she was the daughter of Joseph Wamsley -- I have no idea which is correct. > vii. DANIEL WAMSLEY, b. 12 July 1796, Clarksburg, Virginia; d. 13 > April 1884, Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, Iowa; m. 10 February 1810, > > Randolph County, Virginia. > Notes for DANIEL WAMSLEY: > Lived first in Randolph, Virginia (now West Virginia), then went west. > > 45th Regiment (Peyton's) Virginia Militia, War of 1812, Private. This one really confuses me. Were there two Daniel Wamsleys? I have a Daniel as the son of Joseph, Sr., b. 12 July 1805 and d. 13 Apr 1884 in Page Co., Iowa. He m. Allcey CONRAD 10 Feb 1830. > 8. x. CATHERINE WAMSLEY, b. 1841, Virginia; d. Aft. 1880. I have her as MARRIED Feb 1841 (this can't be her birth year, or she wouldn't fit into this family). All I have done is raise more questions -- does anybody have any answers?? Mary Ann

    1. Matthew and Sarah Currence Wamsley
    2. Jean and all, I have 12 children for Matthew and Sarah Currence Wamsley, but very little documentation supporting what I have. I will have to look up some census material the next time that I am at the Library of Virginia, which will probably be a while. This is what I have: MATTHEW WAMSLEY, SR. (son of JOHN, grandson of JOHN, great-grandson of THOMAS WALMSLEY) was born 17 December 1769 (Source: Records of Phyllis E. Daniels.), and died 03 December 1851 in Randolph County, Virginia. He married SARAH "SALLY" CURRENCE Abt. 1788 in Randolph County, Virginia, daughter of WILLIAM CURRENCE and LYDIA STEELE. She was born 15 March 1770 in Augusta County, Virginia (Source: Records of Mary Ann Wamsley.), and died 18 May 1847. Notes for MATTHEW WAMSLEY, SR.: Augusta County Court Records, Order Book No. XIX, March 21, 1786: Matthew, orphan of John, deceased, chose William Wamsley guardian. Matthew acquired 100 acres of land in Randolph County on March 1, 1810. This land was on Tyger Valley River adjoining John Light and Samuel Currence (source: Library of Virginia, Grants 59, page 566) Matthew was living with son Matthew at the time of the 1850 census. Children of MATTHEW WAMSLEY and SARAH CURRENCE are: 2. i. JONATHAN WAMSLEY, b. 10 September 1786, Beverly, Randolph County, Virginia; d. 21 May 1872, Randolph , West Virginia. 3. ii. KATHERINE HEATER, 26 August 1844, Randolph , Virginia; b. Bef. 1829; d. Aft. 26 August 1844. Notes for JOHN SEYMOUR WAMSLEY: Land Grants, book 18, page 471, date 1851, 100 acres, Wilmothe Run - grantees: John and Matthew Wamsley, grantor: Adam Magee. iv. THOMAS WAMSLEY, b. Aft. 1788; d. Unknown; m. JEMIMA WILMOTH; b. Unknown; d. Unknown. 4. v. MARY JANE WAMSLEY, b. 25 July 1790, Mill Creek, Randolph, Virginia; d. 20 January 1832. 5. vi. SARAH ANN WAMSLEY, b. As far as Samuel Morris Wamsley, I do not have him as a child of Matthew and Sarah. I do have a Samuel Morris, son of Joseph Jr. and Eve Wamsley, who was born 16 July 1788 and died about 1812. I also have a Samuel Morrison Wamsley, born before 1795 and died after 1812, who was in Co. S., Virginia Militia during the War of 1812, and is buried in Beverly Cemetery. I do not know who his parents were. Perhaps Samuel Morris Wamsley and Samuel Morrison Wamsley are the same person. Please do not consider my material that I submit to this list as the Gospel truth!
