Hello, I am new to the surname lists and hope this first question is appropriate (I have not seen any correspondence as of yet so am taking the liberty of jumping on in). I have posted it to the Walls/Wallace lists as well as Fogarty as it pertains info on both branches. I hope I have not breeched protocol by doing so. My name is Stephanie Michelle Patterson - maiden name Fogarty - Whitehead. The question I have pertains to my maternal great-grandmother who, as many of you have assuredly experienced, has turned out to be quite elusive. My now deceased grandfather declared her name to be Lula Walls. She died when he was six whereupon he was placed in an orphanage in Tx. He knew precious little about her. Her death was in 1926 - she is of course not in the 1930 census. I have been pouring through census after census and have finally located a LulU Fogarty living in Refugio, Tx. It is she as it lists her children and my grandfather was among them, Daniel Frederick Fogarty b. 1919 (siblings: "Jack" John Patrick Fogarty, Annie Jewel Fogarty, and Juanita Fogarty - all born in Refugio). In this census (1920), she lists both of her parents being born in Texas. This gave me significantly more to go on; however, after carefully going through earlier census information, not one Walls could be found in the state of Texas that had also been born in Texas, let alone both parents born in Texas. Finally a search on Ancestry.com produced results of "Lulu Wal". I looked at this census (1900) and it shows a William D Wallace (not Wal, although it is now entered in all the Ancestry.com databases as such). He is head and his wife, Zilpha were both born in Texas. There is a 12-year-old daughter named Lulu. The dates match up with her birth. My question is: Would it now be common protocol to accept this as "her", or is further research in order? I have looked into marriage records, et al, but she does not come up as Lulu or Lula Walls - yet neither does a Wallace. The man she was married to, John Patrick Fogarty, b. circa 1884 in Texas does not show up in any records other than the 1920 census, where he states his father was born in Ireland. I am extremely new to genealogy. Please forgive me if I have given too much or too little information. ANY guidance would help tremedously. Sincerely, S. Michelle
