Here's hoping that someone on the Wallace list will be able to help with. The crux of my problem has to do with two differing versions of the Wallace of Craigie pedigree. The Rev. Charles Roger's book, THE BOOK OF WALLACE, says that William Wallace, Tutor of Craigie(liv. 1527)married Margaret Campbell, dau. and heiress of John Campbell of Wester Loudoun. They had two sons: William Wallce of Craigie(the heir)who married Margaret/Margery, only dau. of Alexander Kennedy of Bargany(she remarried to Gilbert, 3rd Earl of Cassilis). This William, son of Wm the Tutor, d. in 1538 and had no issue by his wife, Margaret/Margery Kennedy. Hence, according to Rogers, Craigie passed to Williams, brother, John,(d. 1570)styled "first of Auchans and Dundonald." The Rev. Roger's source for most of this information is George Crawford's NOTES FROM THE PUBLIC RECORDS, Advocates Library. (no date given). On the other hand, James Patterson, in his 1896 book WALLACE--THE HERO OF SCOTLAND, cites a manuscript from the "Middrie Charter Chest", dated 1719, which stipulates that John Wallace(d. 1570), who married the Lady Margaret Cunningham of Glencairn, was, in fact, the SON of William Wallace who married Margaret/Margery Kennedy of Bargany. Simply put, Rogers has William Wallace and John Wallace as brothers, while the manuscript has them as father and son. Furthermore, the variances between the two conflicting pedigrees become even greater when one tries to get "behind" William Wallace, the "Tutor of Craigie"(prob. dead by 1538); as an example.... Rogers has his father as John Wallace, by his wife, Elizabeth, dau. of the 2d Lord Cathcart. The 1719 Middrie manuscript, as best I can tell, seems to say that William Wallace(liv. 1527)was the son of Sir John Wallace by Lady Isobel Campbell, "daughter of the Lord Lowden." As one goes back in time, the pedigrees, not surprisingly, develop other variances, which I think should be held for a separate evaluation because of their lengthy nature. There seems to be little discernible difference between the two pedigrees from the time of Sir John Wallace(d. 1570)into more modern times. John Wallace(d. 1570)was succeeded by his son, John Wallace of Craigie,(who married first, Margaret Campbell, daughter of Sir Matthew Campbell, of Loudoun)died c. 1625. At the moment, the first priority would seem to be the problem that I describe in my paragraphs 2,3,and 4 above. I did note, however, that the Rev. Roger's book, on p. 44, mentions that "William Wallace, the Tutor of Cragy, was, with others, in 1527 fined for intercommuning with his brother-in-law, Sir Hugh Campbell of Loudoun, he being 'at the horn.'" Rogers is very adamant, it seems, about William being the Tutor of Craigie and marrying a Campbell of Wester Loudoun. So, I come to the end of this confusion, and if Hugh B. NanKivell of Australia is monitoring this list, please feel free to correct any error that may have crept into my analysis!<g>Having said that, can anyone else assist us with this problem? I am sending on a copy to Jim Wallace(that is, if this infernal machine will cooperate)and am hoping that he may be able to help. Regards to all, -- Larry D. Hamilton Coats P.O.
