Steve (and Ken and Judy), There are quite a few instances where Wallis was spelled Wallace (or even Walshe), and the onamastic similarities (i.e., the presence of both Nathaniels and Johns) with the Boston-based Wales family led me to check into a potential connection between "our" Wallises and the Nath'l Wales clan last year. However, with reasonable certainty, "our" Nathaniel Wallis is the one baptized in St. Ewe, Cornwall, on July 15, 1632 to a father name John. Several sources (including Nath'l's own death record) give his origin (if not specifically birthplace) as Cornwall and his estimated birth as 1632-4 [Savage's Dictionary, Babson's Histor of Gloucester, and the Beverly VRs]. Given this placement and date range, the baptismal record in St. Ewe, and the fact that there are no other Nathaniel Wallises recorded in Cornwall in the period, I think it's safe to say that Nathaniel of St. Ewe is the same as the immigrant Nathaniel1. However2, the absence of Nathaniel in any other Cornwall records is puzzling and continues to make me wonder whether there might not still be some connection back in England/Cornwall. Nonetheless, the info that I have seen re the Nath'l Wales family of Braintree, Dorchester, Boston, etc. indicates no connection -- nor does any of the info on the Wallises of Essex County. In terms of professions, timing, origins, and naming (beyond their common use of Nathaniel and John -- which are not especially uncommon names), they appear to be unrelated. Perhaps Ken can comment on any data regarding migration between Cornwall and York? I don't know anything on that topic, but it might be useful to have some sense of it. If anything that you've found suggests otherwise, or if I've misread any of the facts as you know them, please let me know. I really appreciate your work and searching.
