Hi Donna: Your 20 Nov. e-mail to the Wallace site renewed my interest in searching for the ancestors of six WALLACE brothers MOSES, WILLIAM, LODOWICK, AARON, DANIEL & JOHN. They all settled in Chanceford Twp., York Co., PA, ca. 1747. Daniel settled in nearby Fawn Twp. The names of their parents are unknown but they probably didn't died before 1755. From where the six brothers came is also unknown but circumstantial evidence indicates the New Munster Tract, Cecil Co., MD. Furthermore, the progenitor may have been the JOHN WALLACE who in 1751 owned land in Chanceford Twp. and was listed along with Moses and William Wallace in the estate papers of Rev. Eleazor Whittlesey, minister of the First Log Church in the Barrens near the junction of Scott's Run and Muddy Creek in Chanceford Twp. A John Wallace had purchased land in the New Munster Tract, Cecil Co., MD, in 1714, Matthew Wallace and Elias Alexander being witnesses. John Wallace, then of Lancaster Co., PA, sold this land on 19 July 1749. (Note that York Co. was not spun off from Lancaster Co. until one month later). Except for Daniel, almost all of the descendants of the six Wallace brothers departed York Co., PA --- Moses to Washington Co., PA, and the others to Cabarrus Co., NC. Daniel died in Fawn Twp., York Co., in 1755/6, apparently childless. The significant exception to the above is Matthew Wallace, eldest son of Moses. MATTHEW WALLACE born ca. 1744, married SUSANNA [-?-] ca. 1773, died 18 Jan. 1831 in Lower Chanceford Twp., York Co. The sons of Matthew & Susanna were: - MOSES WALLACE died 1791-1831 - MATTHEW WALLACE born ca. 1781, married Mrs. MARIA ANN JUSTICE of Baltimore 10 Aug. 1842, died <Nov. 1867. They had two sons: - MATTHEW JOSEPH WALLACE born 1842-4, living in Lower Chanceford Twp. in 1870 - THOMAS CHALMERS WALLACE born ca. 1846, living in 1868. Another interesting connection is that JOHN WALLACE, the youngest of the six Wallace brothers, married ESTHER ALEXANDER in York Co., PA. Esther was daughter of ELIAS ALEXANDER. No will has been found for Elias; however, JEDIA(H) ALEXANDER named his sister Esther in his will written 31 Aug. 1749 in York Co., PA, with witnesses Aaron and William Wallace (i.e., 2 of the 6 brothers). For further information see William Wallace Barton & Jean Wallace Gayle, "Six Wallace Brothers & their Descendants from Chanceford Twp., York Co., PA, in the mid-18th Century" (1996). This book is out of print but can be rented from the Family History Library, microfilm #2055299, item #9). Can anyone connect into this gang or suggest how to continue this fascinating search?
