    1. James S. Wallace, ca 1805 - 18 Feb 1865

    3. Hello. I am new to this list. I am researching James S. Wallace. All of the information that follows is documented in original records. James was born in New York State between 19 Feb 1805 and 17 Feb 1806. His father was a merchant. James attended school at Captain Partridge's academy in Middletown CT sometime during the period of 1825-1829. Although he began studies to be a lawyer, he turned to a literary career. At various times he was an actor, manager of a theatre, dramatist, agent of the Associated Press, and newspaper editor in Pennsylvania. He was an associate editor for the Louisville (KY) Journal when he died on 18 Feb 1865. He was apparently married twice, the second time to a lady whose given name was Eliza. He is said to have had a total of 8 children. I can identify the names of 6 of them: Ellen, Charlotte, Catherine, James, Anne, and Henry. Eliza, his second wife, was an actress. I am trying to determine the names of his parents. All I know for certain is that his mother was still living, and in New York State at the time of his death. One last note: he was referred to as Colonel James S. Wallace, although there is no indication that he was every in the military so it was probably an honorary title. Here are two census records for him. The Francis B. Wallace named in 1850 is most likely related, but it is not clear how. 1850 Federal Census: Pennsylvania, Philadelphia North Ward, page 327B household 1272/1641 Francis B. 3. James S. Wallace, when he died on 18 Feb 1865, was in his 60th year, meaning that he was 59 years old. Thus I calculate that he was born between 19 Feb 1805 and 17 Feb 1806. If this is accurate, then he was 14-15 in the 1820 census. Given that he was born in New York State, that his father was a merchant, and that he was sent to Middletown CT in the latter part of the 1820's for schooling, I am working on the assumption that he was living in his father's household in New York in 1820, and that their residence was reasonably close to Connecticut. Following that assumption, I have examined the 1820 census images for the New York counties that border Connecticut, or are reasonably close to it; and have sought out Wallace households, headed by men, and containing a male aged 14-15. What I have found are listed below. The next step, as I see it, is to begin eliminating some of these 13 households to narrow down the possible candidates. That is where you come in. If you know anything about one or more of these households that can help me either select or eliminate it from the list, but contact me. Thanks.
