Hi Listers, I have been swamped with various suggestions, offers and much interest regarding the Wallace materials that I would like to pass on to someone else. There were so many offers that I probably won't be able to write back to everyone. Please accept my profound thankfulness that there are so many folks willing to accept and preserve these materials. I will let the folks on the list know what my decision is. THANKS again, Marjorie Priser ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Historic Clunette http://www.clunette.com YesterYear in Print http://yesteryear.clunette.com Wallace, Vandermark, Priser genealogies http://genealogy.clunette.com
Hi listers, I published a newsletter 15 years ago called Wallace-Wallice-Wallis Connections. There were 7 issues plus an issue dedicated to ancestors of the subscribers in a database fashion. During those near 2 years, I amassed a collection of various types of Wallace resources. I made copies of many of the Wallace books, kept files on ancestors of the subscribers and much more. I am trying to "downsize" and would like to hand these materials over to someone who would keep them as resources with the idea of helping persons who are researching the Wallace surname. Postage to mail these materials would probably be prohibitive. There are 5 "banker boxes" full & overflowing. I live in northern Indiana. Is there someone who would like to take these materials off my hands. With the "privacy issue" such a hot topic these days, I'm not sure that a library would consider taking them, out of fear that they might be invading someone's privacy (names & addresses of subscribers, membership correspondence, etc). I really hate to throw this material away -- but really do need to get rid of it. If anyone has any ideas ... or any offers, please e-mail me privately. I will respond asap. THANKS! James S. Wallace, when he died on 18 Feb 1865, was in his 60th year, meaning that he was 59 years old. Thus I calculate that he was born between 19 Feb 1805 and 17 Feb 1806. If this is accurate, then he was 14-15 in the 1820 census. Given that he was born in New York State, that his father was a merchant, and that he was sent to Middletown CT in the latter part of the 1820's for schooling, I am working on the assumption that he was living in his father's household in New York in 1820, and that their residence was reasonably close to Connecticut. Following that assumption, I have examined the 1820 census images for the New York counties that border Connecticut, or are reasonably close to it; and have sought out Wallace households, headed by men, and containing a male aged 14-15. What I have found are listed below. The next step, as I see it, is to begin eliminating some of these 13 households to narrow down the possible candidates. That is where you come in. If you know anything about one or more of these households that can help me either select or eliminate it from the list, but contact me. Thanks. Hello. I am new to this list. I am researching James S. Wallace. All of the information that follows is documented in original records. James was born in New York State between 19 Feb 1805 and 17 Feb 1806. His father was a merchant. James attended school at Captain Partridge's academy in Middletown CT sometime during the period of 1825-1829. Although he began studies to be a lawyer, he turned to a literary career. At various times he was an actor, manager of a theatre, dramatist, agent of the Associated Press, and newspaper editor in Pennsylvania. He was an associate editor for the Louisville (KY) Journal when he died on 18 Feb 1865. He was apparently married twice, the second time to a lady whose given name was Eliza. He is said to have had a total of 8 children. I can identify the names of 6 of them: Ellen, Charlotte, Catherine, James, Anne, and Henry. Eliza, his second wife, was an actress. I am trying to determine the names of his parents. All I know for certain is that his mother was still living, and in New York State at the time of his death. One last note: he was referred to as Colonel James S. Wallace, although there is no indication that he was every in the military so it was probably an honorary title. Here are two census records for him. The Francis B. Wallace named in 1850 is most likely related, but it is not clear how. 1850 Federal Census: Pennsylvania, Philadelphia North Ward, page 327B household 1272/1641 Francis B. Wallace - 21 M, editor, NY James Wallace - 46 M, editor, NY Eliza Wallace - 25 F, PA Ellen Wallace - 13 F, NY Charlott Wallace - 11 F, PA Catherine Wallace - 8 F, PA James Wallace - 6 M, Pa Julia Stone - 58 F, DE 1860 Federal Census: Kentucky, Jefferson County, Louisville 3rd Ward, page 122 household 664/905 James S. Wallace - 54 M, Editor, --, $1000, NY Eliza Wallace - 34 F, PA Charlotte Wallace - 20 F, PA Cath Wallace - 19 F, PA James Wallace - 15 M, PA Anna Wallace - 10 F, PA Henry Wallace - 8 M, PA Any help in learning more about this family will be greatly appreciated. I have reached a road block. I am trying to research my Wallace side. I didn't know how common the name "Wallace" is or better yet, Edward, William, Henry, John, and James. My great great grandfather James was born in PA... ABOUT 1808 - 1814. He moved to Leesburg, Loudoun Co., VA. I don't know when. He married an Adelaide ? or Adelia Johnson. This is according to 1850 Census and my great grandfather's marriage records. They had several children: Christie @1834 Frances @1837 Daniel @1838 Alverta @1840 James @1843 Almeda @ 1842 Henry Clay @1847 William @ 1849 Jannett @1850 Elizabeth @1857 John @1859 William is my great grandfather. His middle name is Webster. He at some time moved to Granville, Hampden Co., MA and married Emma Randall in 1883. Emma is the daughter of Niles C. and Mittie Aldrich Randall. I was able to trace the Aldrich side of the family and also the Randall side. William and Emma also had several children: Clarissa A. @1883 Edward. W. @1885 James M. @1887 William W. @1888 he died 2 years later - double pheumonia Alvida E. @1889 Essie C. @1891 she died 7 days later - unknown cause. Nettie Etta @1892 Lottie V. @1894 Emma went on to marry Florent Rosier after William died in 1902. Emma died in 1922 in Winsted, CT. They had 2 children. Edward is my grandfather. His middle name was also Webster. My father was Edward Webster, Jr. Now back to James. The 1850 Census has his middle initial M. My great grandfather William's marriage record to Emma Randall has James's middle initial as W. I know information in Census records can be somewhat incorrect. Henry Clay married Henrietta Forsythe of VA. They had three children: Essey C. Francis C Julian C. They moved to Washington, D.C. I cannot go back any further with James. I don't have any idea when in PA he came from. Can anyone out there help me. my e-mail address is:lisa32738@yahoo.com. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? The book referenced in this message is "The Book of Wallace" by Dr. Charles Rogers. It has been republished by the Clan Wallace Society (Worldwide) and is available through their website: clanwallace.org. It was originally published by the Grampian Club of Edinburgh in 250 copies in 1889. I do not know what the reference to Family Tree Maker is unless this particular family has traced their family back to Sir William Wallace's grandfather and have that data in FTM.
