    1. [WALLACE-L] John Wallace, born about 1675 Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland Son of John Wallace and Lady Margaret Maxwell
    2. Thomas Randall
    3. Mr. Wallace, I read your e-mail with interest. I did not know about all of the separate branches of Wallaces from Scotland. I have never done any Scottish research until my discovery that my 5g-grandfather, Abijah Wallace of North Salem, NY is the grandson of Sergeant John Wallace of Glasgow, Lanarkshire Scotland and Norwalk, Fairfield, CT. I have recently obtained a partial copy of the "Wallace Family Notes" submitted to the NY G&B in 1955. I am compiling and intend to publish "The Descendants of John Wallace and Mary Hyatt of Norwalk, CT 1709-2009". I want to remove the family legend of descent from the great patriot William Wallace and place John with the right clan Wallace. How can I do this knowing that he was "press-ganged" into the Royal Navy in Glasgow around 1700 and jumped overboard in 1706 while anchored off Connecticut? The IGI claims his parents were John Wallace born 1649 and Lady Margaret Maxwell born in 1653 in Glasgow but as an aspiring professional genealogist awaiting board certification, I must have primary evidence! Where can I look? I have tried GENUKI and the Wallace web site with Braveheart depicted. I will go to your web site here in a minute. Can you point me to the right resource in Scotland? Is there a published history of the clan with a genealogy prior to, say, 1750? Any help is appreciated. Thomas Edmund Peter Randall #758 Randall Association of Long Island, Inc. 1. [WALLACE-L] Moses, William, Lodowick, Aaron, Daniel & John Wallace to Chanceford Twp., York Co., PA, ca. 1747
    2. William W Barton
    3. Hi Donna: Your 20 Nov. e-mail to the Wallace site renewed my interest in searching for the ancestors of six WALLACE brothers MOSES, WILLIAM, LODOWICK, AARON, DANIEL & JOHN. They all settled in Chanceford Twp., York Co., PA, ca. 1747. Daniel settled in nearby Fawn Twp. The names of their parents are unknown but they probably didn't died before 1755. From where the six brothers came is also unknown but circumstantial evidence indicates the New Munster Tract, Cecil Co., MD. Furthermore, the progenitor may have been the JOHN WALLACE who in 1751 owned land in Chanceford Twp. and was listed along with Moses and William Wallace in the estate papers of Rev. Eleazor Whittlesey, minister of the First Log Church in the Barrens near the junction of Scott's Run and Muddy Creek in Chanceford Twp. A John Wallace had purchased land in the New Munster Tract, Cecil Co., MD, in 1714, Matthew Wallace and Elias Alexander being witnesses. John Wallace, then of Lancaster Co., PA, sold this land on 19 July 1749. (Note that York Co. was not spun off from Lancaster Co. until one month later). Except for Daniel, almost all of the descendants of the six Wallace brothers departed York Co., PA --- Moses to Washington Co., PA, and the others to Cabarrus Co., NC. Daniel died in Fawn Twp., York Co., in 1755/6, apparently childless. The significant exception to the above is Matthew Wallace, eldest son of Moses. MATTHEW WALLACE born ca. 1744, married SUSANNA [-?-] ca. 1773, died 18 Jan. 1831 in Lower Chanceford Twp., York Co. The sons of Matthew & Susanna were: - MOSES WALLACE died 1791-1831 - MATTHEW WALLACE born ca. 1781, married Mrs. MARIA ANN JUSTICE of Baltimore 10 Aug. 1842, died <Nov. 1867. They had two sons: - MATTHEW JOSEPH WALLACE born 1842-4, living in Lower Chanceford Twp. in 1870 - THOMAS CHALMERS WALLACE born ca. 1846, living in 1868. Another interesting connection is that JOHN WALLACE, the youngest of the six Wallace brothers, married ESTHER ALEXANDER in York Co., PA. Esther was daughter of ELIAS ALEXANDER. No will has been found for Elias; however, JEDIA(H) ALEXANDER named his sister Esther in his will written 31 Aug. 1749 in York Co., PA, with witnesses Aaron and William Wallace (i.e., 2 of the 6 brothers). For further information see William Wallace Barton & Jean Wallace Gayle, "Six Wallace Brothers & their Descendants from Chanceford Twp., York Co., PA, in the mid-18th Century" (1996). This book is out of print but can be rented from the Family History Library, microfilm #2055299, item #9). Can anyone connect into this gang or suggest how to continue this fascinating search? 1. [WALLACE-L] Wallaces in Cross Roads, PA Cemetery
    2. Great work, Ruth, with the scout project. Wish there were more like you and the scouts. I can't place these names to my line, but I'm wondering if they might be descendents of Matthew Wallace(b.1650) and Elizabeth Alexander Wallace's sons: James or Matthew (b. 1672). I don't know anything of the son James, but son Matthew married Sarah Alexander and had sons James, Matthew, William, Joseph, George, Alexander, Ezekial and John. I know some of these children moved out of the Maryland / Delaware area. The town of Cross Roads, PA, where the cemetery you surveyed is north of Baltimore, MD. This is just a wild guess, but maybe someone on the List can make a connection. I'll put these names in my data base. Thanks alot Ruth. Annie and Margaret immigrated in 1895 (census records). Annie married Patrick BERRY and Margaret married Charles HEROLD. Do these names sound familiar to anyone? What would be the best way to find out exactly where they were born? All my relatives that would have possibly known the answer are dead now. Any suggestions? Thanks!! Teresa Herold Finley
