    3. Karl My notes tell me that James Stinson and family left Greenbrier Co, WV on 19 Sep 1893 with a colony of over 60 people. All the families had sold their homes in WV to move to Oklahoma where the Cherokee Strip had been opened to homesteading. One of the men was afraid of going into the country without knowing something about it so he told his son to go there and stay for the summer to see what kind of place it was. The young man filed a claim and plowed about 30 acres and planted it to corn. He got about $7 out of the crop as the hot winds and grasshoppers destroyed the crop. The young man's grandfather had fought in the civil war and soon after the war one of his buddies came to Washington State. He liked it so well that he went back to WV and recruited the group to come west. When they all decided they didn't want to go to Ok. they all came to Wa instead.
