Hello all, There have been a few questions since my last post and I'd like to clarify some things. 1. For the listing of cemeteries by county, the correct url is http://www.rootsweb.com/~wapsgs/WSCA/cemeteri.html Sorry about providing the wrong one earlier. 2. County auditors will do NOTHING with information provided to them on cemeteries. They are only required by the new law to notate on a title that the property either IS a cemetery or contains a cemetery. They are not required to make anyone clean up a cemetery nor are they required to track what someone is doing with their cemetery. Again, they merely record the fact that a property is a cemetery. And, they won't be required to track cemeteries or give you paperwork for cemeteries or anything else along those lines until 90 DAYS from now. Lastly, 3. Our web site does not carry transcriptions. We have legal information about cemeteries at our site and IF a transcription is known of, we include that at our site. Each county has a listing of cemeteries within that county. If information is available on a specific cemetery (i.e., owner, various names of cemetery, point of contact, location, special notes, who has transcribed, etc.), we have added another page on just that cemetery which includes all the special information for that cemetery alone. To get a better idea of how this works, please visit http://www.rootsweb.com/~wapsgs/WSCA/kitsap/kitsap.html . The page is Kitsap County Cemeteries. Kitsap County has about 70 cemeteries listed. Because I did the research on each of these cemeteries (along with Lisa Miller), there is a link for almost every cemetery. If you click on Breidablick Cemetery, you will see a page open that shows the information below -- it includes who transcribed the cemetery. Now, if you would like, you can write Puget Sound Genealogical Society and ask them for information on their transcriptions. Contact: Evergreen Cemetery & Church Association 27715 Beham St. Poulsbo, WA 98370 Transcribed by: Puget Sound Genealogical Society 1026 Sidney Ave, #110 Port Orchard, WA 98366 More information: Kitsap County Historical Museum in Bremerton, WA, has a file on this cemetery containing the history of the cemetery, the families, and the area along with a copy of the transcription. Write them at 280 4th, Bremerton WA 98337. Location: Located three miles north of Poulsbo on Highway 3 at the corner of Pioneer Way NW and Breidablick Pl. NW. If I can answer any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. I hope this has helped! Andi
Is the site working where the cemetereies are listed you gave below? My server doesn't have it ( not listed.) it says I have sprynet.com Is there another way or is it out to add more to it? This page does not primarily handle the transcriptions. I think in time they will have it linked with the page where the transcription is from each cemetery listing. For now the Washington Cemetery project page would be your best bet. You might also notice we need more transcribers. Many counties do not have much up yet.....Give Kevin or I a shout if you wish to adopt one.... http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wa/wacem.htm Maggie EW Coordinator At 12:12 PM 5/18/99 -0700, you wrote: >http://www.rootsweb.com/~wapsgs/WSCA/wsca.html > >Thank you for the information, but I had to use the above address to find >the cemetery page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wapsgs/WSCA/wsca.html Thank you for the information, but I had to use the above address to find the cemetery page. I also have a question about the transcriptions. First, if you have received a duplication of this email, please forgive me as we are trying to give widest dissemination. As you all know, legislation was submitted this year regarding old or abandoned cemeteries within Washington state. That legislation was passed unanimously through the House and the Senate and very quickly. Yesterday, Governor Gary Locke signed the legislation which means that in about 90 days, the legislation will become law (technically, 90 days after legislative session ends). Many thanks go to Representative Patricia Lantz, and her legislative aid, Dixie, for all their hard work; and to all of you who supported the legislation by writing your state senators and representatives or attended the hearings. For a fairly complete listing of cemeteries within Washington state, please visit http://www.rootsweb.com/~wapsgs/wsca.html . Our site is constantly being added to and it is hopeful that a search engine will be available in the near future to aid in locating a specific cemetery. While we do not carry transcription records of individual cemeteries, we do try to list who does have a transcription available. Information on the new law: The new law requires county auditors within the state to track cemeteries as they do all other properties. Genealogists have long tried to locate cemeteries in Washington hoping to locate an ancestor's gravesite; until now we have had to rely on the knowledge of individuals. Now, because cemeteries are tracked by county auditors, a genealogist may go to an auditor's office, ask about a cemetery and actually be told where it is. No more guessing and no more searching. Please understand, though, that it may take several months for county auditors to get up to speed on the cemeteries in their county. Washington State Cemetery Association is attempting to aid them by providing the required paperwork for each cemetery -- not an easy task. In addition, because a title/deed/whatever will carry the fact that a property is a cemetery or that a cemetery is located on the property, construction permits will not be granted for that property unless bodies are removed and reinterred elsewhere and the cemetery dedication removed. This requires permission of a county superior court. The new law also requires a county auditor be notified 60 days before filing with the superior court. Ideally, this will mean Washington state will not lose anymore of its old cemeteries. The new law is below my signature block. Please note that new or added law is between the plus signs (+). -------------- Andrea D. Sandie, Ethel is part of the Onalaska School District and even though at one time not too long ago they had their own post office they are not really a town. There are 2 stores in the Ethel area that is located along Hwy. 12. One is Perry's (I think that's still the name) and other one is right at the Brim/Leonard Rd. intersection with Hwy 12, a small gas station and store. The Cemetary is off the Gore Rd. and for records the following contact is available. Marie Parnell, 185 Kruger Rd. Onalaska, WA. 98570 (360) 978-4432. The cemetary is 1 acre and on private property and was created in 1915. John Blair/listowner.
Glad to see that you are back online. I am quite anxious to learn about the family line you are researching Hawkins/Phillips. Please let me know. I would love to share information. Which grandfather owned the mill? Donna DeLeon
Hi Donna, John Russell Somerville, III along with one of his brothers, owned the Somerville Brothers Lumber Co. It burned down in the early 1900's, and they apparently never rebuilt. The mill was located on what is Haywire Road and W. Washington St. Their house was located at 119 W. Washington St. where it still stands today. John was married to Nancy Caroline Phillips, d/o Isaiah and Sarah 'Magill' Phillips. Some of the other Phillips children married Hawkins. John and Nancy were my g-grandparents. Their daughter Stella was my grandmother. She married John Andrew Jackson Proffitt whose brother Samuel Lehman started the "Proffitt" Department store chain in Centralia, Chehalis, Olympia and Longview. Do you connect? Sandie
Greetings, Many thanks to those who helped me find the Napavine Cemetery. I also stopped at the "City Hall", and they had some photo's of the Lumber Mill my great grandfather owned. I'm going to add to their collection, by sending them a photo of the somerville Family. I also found out, the old home was still standing, so I took a picture of it. It was a fun trip. Now, I have a new request... Does anyone know about the little town of Ethel? Does anyone on our list live near the cemetery? If anyone is available to check it out, I'll send names of the people I'd like info on. Or, does anyone know whom I can write to for information on who is buried there? Thanks, Sandie
