    2. When I was a little boy at Morton, WA (in the 1930's) I remember the "Vet. Day" parades and at the front carrying the flag would be a small number of old men, Veterans of the Civil War. All were in Gray. I guess they soon died out, but I remember them well. Most had long gray beards. (There weren't more than 5 or 6) My memory fails me on the number. Rodney D. Veitschegger

    1. [WALEWIS-L] Buchanan Family of Lewis County
    2. Michelle A. Day
    3. I am researching the Buchanan, White, Newland and Tullis. This family is too much to go into detail on but they are considered to be part of the first families in Boistfort. George Buchanan (Grandpa) married to Catherine Hittle. Then there is Elizabeth Buchanan married to Charles White. Elizabeth was the first white woman to be at Boistfort. John Buchanan owned a stage coach stop plus he owned many businesses on Tower Avenue. Then there is Amos Tullis married to Catherine Buchanan. Amos was mayor of Centralia at one time in the 1880's. Mary Buchanan married Thompson Newland. Mary was the first public school teacher and Thompson Newland was also superintendant of the school system. George Buchanan (Grandpa) was also superintendant at one time. Plus there is Winfield and James. James ended up in Oregon from the Oregon trail and some years later Winfield moved from Washington to Oregon. Sometimes you will see a mention of Samuel Buchanan, that is George W. Buchanan (Grandpa) brother. And the list goes on and on... I have many of the items listed in books and such and the newspaper abstracts. I am still looking for information in "odd" places. Thanks. Michelle 4th great granddaughter of George and Catherine Buchanan.

    3. Hi, I am looking for a William "Wes" Pollan, he died somewhere in Lewis County on 25 Jun 1954. We believe he was a veterinarian. His wife was Mary E. ?. She had been married previously to Wilson and had 2 children by him. We do not believe Wes and Mary had children. Wes was born about Nov 1872 in CA. The Pollan family moved to the Goldendale area around 1882. Is there anyone out there that has heard of this family? Can someone help me find out what city he is buried in? Any assistance or suggestions is greatly appreciated on this very elusive family. Deanna Redmond, WA

    2. John Blair
    3. Hello everyone, It's starting to get awfully quiet on the list, especially since there are 72 people now subscribed. Obviously many are not participating. There has been several that have unsubscribed and several newcomers to the list over the last several weeks. I think it would be a good time for everyone to post their queries about the lines they are researching so that the newcomers as well as the veterans can become reacquainted with who is researching what families. Remember to be as specific and thorough in your queries as possible. Try to include names, dates, places, etc. Don't just include a list of surnames and lastly remember when responding to a message to change the subject heading to match what your message is about. 3. Hi John & all, Thank you for this list and all the help you have giving. The interesting stories about the area and it's people helps us understand our ancestors better. When we can not ask them questions about their lives we need to listen to the stories of others who lived at that time. I will have to unsubcribe at this time. I am a commercial llama outfitter and guide in the Olympic Mountains and will not be home much this summer. I will be back in the fall with a lot of new questions and information. Thank you all again. Kit kits@kits.seanet.com Researching: Murphy & Roundtree, in Lewis Co.

    2. I have never done any research on the PHILLIPS family, and can't help you on it. They must have been involved with families that were involved with my ROBERTS, but don't know any direct connections. The Workman, Schwartz, HUNT and some others were connected to my family. 1. [WALEWIS-L] Washington State Archives NW Branch
    2. John & Arlene Planinshek
    3. 2nd posting Olympia is one of five regional archives in this state and operates under the Office of the Secretary of State. The archives operate under the general records act, RCW 40:14. The other four regional archives are located in Ellensburg, Bellingham, Cheney and Bellevue. Basically the system, which started in the early 1970s, was established to collect, preserve and make available local public records, of lasting historical value, in the region in which they were created. SW (Southwest) has the oldest documentation, reaching back to 1847 (a Lewis County Commissioners record). The archives are also charged with providing records management consultations to public government entities; it is through the records scheduling process that future archival/historical records will largely come into our holdings. The archives are available for post-disaster and disaster prevention consultation. All regional archives offer tours and research services. In addition to the usual requirements of the job, there are other services that are unique to the operation, these include: Opening the doors on selective Saturdays for genealogical groups to undertake intensive research; oral interviewing of individuals who have had a significant impact on local community life; and, the three regional archivists now carry video and 35mm cameras on the road and between official visits record the evolution of Southwest Washington. The SW Regional Archives serves all public entities (including county and city governmental offices, ports, p.u.d.s, fire districts, educational school districts and school districts, health districts as well as diking and water districts). Records stored in the archives which are especially useful for genealogists include: marriage, birth and death records, wills, probate and civil documentation, property records, census data, extensive educational documentation, deeds and mortgages and naturalizations. The Archives are open for research 8:30 to 4:30 daily (and periodically for group research on Saturdays). The Archive staff consists of Lanny Weaver (assistant), Terri Juillerat (customer services specialist) and myself, Wayne Lawson (Regional Archivist). It is best if potential researchers call in advance to schedule their time here; sometimes all three of us are out of the office. My phone number is 360-753-1684. Research is generally handled by either Lanny or Terri at 360-586-4898. Our Fax number is 360-664-8814. These are our basic charges: (1) If we do the research --- $10 minimum or $25 an hour, $0.15 per page copied, $3 mailing and, if needs be, $5 for certification; or (2) if the researcher comes into our archives the only costs would be --- $0.15 per page copied and $5 if certification is needed. The address of the Archives is: Archives & Records Management Division Office of the Secretary of State 1120 Washington Street SE * P.O. Box 40238 Olympia, WA. 98504-0238

    3. 2 of my Dad's sisters Emma "Pansy" Blair and Ethel Blair married brothers. Emma married Herb Snodgrass and Ethel married Oliver "Brick" Snodgrass. Your Elmer was their brother and his wife Iris Workman went to the same church I did when I was growing up. We had always been told 5 brothers and their father came from West Virginia and settled in Lewis Co. My Blair's came from Wise Co. (Present day Dickenson Co.VA) then to Minnesota before they came to Lewis Co.....I am particularly looking for any relatives out of the two branches related to me. .....and by the way, my sister's husband's sister married one of the Mossyrock Snodgrasses which are descendants from one of the 5 brothers.
