    3. The mural will not only sadden the old schoolmates, but our murals are part of what draws visitors to our little town. It is hard to believe they will be destroyed after such a short existence. Wonder why they weren't initially coated with something to preserve them? Maybe they plan to restored the damaged areas after it is cleaned? Who knows? I'm sure my pull as 1990 Outstanding Student of the Year and my Chronicle Scholarship will have some weight with Hank:>) My children & I spent almost 3 years, practically living at the college--I hate to see this happen. I will give Hank my nickel's worth & cross my fingers that someone manages to straighten this out. Thanks for the heads up! Patricia Moon

    1. Re: [WALEWIS-L] Centralia HS 1924 Graduation/2
    2. 7-27-99 Dear Jenny: I graduated in 1958 from CHS and thought to put the word out with some of the reunion committee (Richard Edinger is son of the Edinger who had the Centralia Chronicle for years - he's with the Oregonan now) and Judy Greeley H. has been on the reunion committee for decades - anyway I'm pasting their replies below in their entirity (ms?)... some of the class of '58 live in the Seattle area too - also the mother of a 1957 classmate lives in a nursing home at Northgate - she graduated in the late 1920s as I recall going through her annual when I dated her son circa 1957 - I'm still in touch with him BTW - Centralia wasn't very big and most every one knew every one else. When you read the posts GO TO THE BOTTOM of this page and work your way UP to get the chronological order. Keep me posted. Cheers, LaVonne Schoneman I'm at (206) 362-0627 in Shoreline if you need to phone me - after 1:00 in the aft. up until midnight are my best times. As a writer, I work odd hours. His widow is still in Centralia and is at Colonial Residence - she dates Dayton Burt Garrison who is living at Stillwater. They owned Proffitt's department store on Tower Avenue (across the street from Gesler-McNiven). Farnham Davis was my neighbor - lived on M Street for many years, his widow, Ersel died within the past year. No children. Lloyd Burdette was the husband of Reva Burdette - they lived on Main Street a block down from the Chevrolet dealership (big house). Reva is at Colonial Residence and was just at the Old Schoolmates Reunion. Her sister is Verdi Burdette (married name I forget) and she lives in Bellingham. She was the music director at the First Methodist Church when I was going there in the '50s. Eugene Alvord was married to Margaret Alvord (had a daughter at CHS about our time, but I forget her name). Also Richard Alvord was their son. Both are dead. I didn't spend a great deal of time on her list, but know that mother keeps track and could provide a tremendous amount of information. Many of those people are still involved in the yearly Old Schoolmates Reunion. I was sent a program from the Centralia H.S. Class of 1924 Commencement Exercises, which includes the schedule of events and list of graduates. I've transcribed this information and posted it on the GenWeb page at: http://www.halcyon.com/jennyrt/walewis/chs1924.html. Now, here's what I would love: if you recognize a name among the graduates, and know something about their life after graduation, I'd love to put together a companion "Where are they now" page. Doesn't have to be a novel, but something to satisfy curiosity (such as my own!) Thank you for your time! I have been extremely busy with my work-related functions that I haven't been keeping up with my e-mail. I don't foresee my schedule slowing down at all in the next 4-5 months, so have decided just to go forward with e-mails on a more regular basis. Regarding the below - my mother, Dorothy Bradford Greeley - 1004 Orton Avenue - Centralia, WA 98531 Telephone: 360-736-6169, is pretty much to official keeper of the records for CHS classes. For a number of years she was in charge of the Old Schoolmates Reunions (held the last Sunday of July each year) and also has annual reunions for her class (1935). They just had their 64th reunion and had 39 people there - at The Coachpost Restaurant which is near the old Fords Prairie School (toward Galvin). Anyway, she has the annuals from many of the old classes and, since she has been in Centralia her whole life (81 years), she has a tremendous storehouse of knowledge on the people around town. It might be good for WALEWIS to make contact with mom - I'm sure she could provide a wealth of information. Hope that things are going well for you. Have you read the book "Tuesdays with Morrie"? I would recommend it to you - a good read. Their children were, according to the 1860 and 1870 US Census; Charles, Mary Elizabeth, Richard, William J., James O., Robert and Perry. Please contact me if your have any information on this family. I'll be in Lewis County the first week of August researching this family and need all of the help I can get from all of you. Thank you so much. Robert A. Moore Nevada

    2. Peter M. & Andrea D. MacDonald
    3. Hello all The other day I forwarded an email on to these same lists about an upcoming hearing regarding a building permit (to build a building on cemetery property and over bodies). The trial has been a long and expensive one for the families involved in the lawsuit (they are the plaintiffs). I was notified this morning that the subject hearing has been cancelled. The attorney for the plaintiff wrote a letter to the hearing examiner informing him/her that he/she was close to contempt of court if the hearing went ahead. Someone at the City of Snohomish was finally listening. They cancelled the hearing. We will keep everyone posted on future events. Part of the court order is that the City of Snohomish must complete a Request For Proposal This is the call to all archaeologists to prepare bids for the work on removing all the bodies except those under the Senior Center. Individuals who claim to be an archeologist, may call the City and request that a copy be mailed to you. -------------- Andrea D. 3. Today I rec'd my summer letter from the Genealogical Society and would like to share the following: This is word for word and it appears that we have a mass retirement going on. I would encourage you all, it appears that they want some fresh blood in the Society, The Sept meeting is the 21st at the PUD Bldg with LaVonne N. Sparkman /author of East Lewis County History. There is also a call for Volunteers to help at the SW Wash. Fair on Aug. 17-22nd. If you would like to be involved or fill a position please contact John Planinshek, who is subscribed to this list and will get your messages. ! John Blair/Listowner "LCGS OFFICERS QUIT Your present 1999 officers of the Lewis County Genealogical Society are TIRED. The majority of the officers will not be accepting any positions in the year 2000. You may have noticed in the last several years that it's always the same members, who at the last minute, give in. We would hate for our genealogy society to collapse for lack of participation. Our society is very important to us and we will be willing to hlep out on any committees or projects. LCGS has approximately 80 members. Please be thinking about what position would interest you. The elections for year 2000 will be our NOvember meeting. A volunteer is needed to be the Nominations Chairman. THESE OLD OFFICERS ARE EXPIRING WITH THE 20TH CENTURY Linda Patton - President Vina O-Reilly First Vice President Corrine Longshore 2nd Vice President Catherine Weber Secretary Leslie Parnell Treasurer

    3. Hi Chris Kerr, The last I knew of the Chehalis newspapers they were upstairs in the RR Historical Soc. place at the Old Train Depot there. I know because they were first at the Library there then moved to the RR Historical Place by the Tracks. I went looking for my grandmother's death notice but never found it up to 1906. Someone had to be there that could go upstairs to get them and bring them down to you. Several times I was there driving from Roy and no one was there that could go get the ones i need. So I still don't have it. The Death indexes for the state was later so didn't have anything. She is Sarah Jane Baldwin (Pumphrey being maiden )Name. She was reburried abt 1924 from Old Wm. Pumphrey place outside of Vader (was Little Falls) into the Cem at now Vader but Cem called Little Falls. I had walked 5 cem in 2 days in 1983 looking for her. I was told she wasn't in the Little Falls Cem. but I looked anyway and found her. But NO DATES at all on Stone. Just her name and Mother of James Smith. Another son is bur. close by, Wesley Smith. She was mar. 1st to a Peter Smith and he died abt 1885 then she mar. My GrFather Paden Cox Baldwin ( called Perry or Henry ) sometimes. Sorry abt the long message but if anyone out there finds her in Newspaper after 1904, I would thank them much. I don't know if they have been filmed or not. The Place in Olympia that has copies of all newspapers published that have survived in Wash State at the Capitol Place where they have filmed them. I can't get there to look but you may also order them from the Pub. lib. or Fam. Hist. Centers?? 1. Re: [WALEWIS-L] Fw: looking for roundtrees/2
    2. Are you looking for CENTRALIA, THE FIRST 50 YEARS by Herndon Smith? or possibly MEMORIES (put out by the Mossyrock Grange in 1976)? MEMORIES is on file at the RR station museum and you might get the CENTRALIA book from Kay Campbell of a Centralia car dealership (don't remember the make of cars). 3. This is the first I've heard of this book. Although I do know that about this time the Lewis County Grange (I believe) put out a book about families in the Lewis County area. They are short stories from the families of the early pioneers of Lewis County. The book is in the Timberland Regional Library (Chehalis I think) but it can be ordered. If you have dialcat for the TRL in your area you can find it in their listing. Can't remember the exact name something like Memories of School District #?? -----Original Message----- From: John Blair <jblair@kalama.com> To: WALEWIS-L@rootsweb.com <WALEWIS-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, July 19, 1999 8:11 PM Subject: [WALEWIS-L] Fw: looking for roundtrees > >From: sally watson > >my name is sally watson i am looking for a book the history of lewis co. washington copyright 1985 by the lewis county historical society do you know where I could purshase it or can you put me in contact with someone that can get me a copy I am in the early stages of my family tree and my ancestors the Roundtrees were some of the first settlers in lewis county. 2. Peter M. & Andrea D. MacDonald
    3. Hello all, As many of you may know, the AGS (Association for Gravestone Studies) conference is coming up in August. I will be speaking on Washington state and what we are doing here to encourage cemetery preservation. I would like to hear from some of you who have cemetery success stories and some of you that have seen some terrible things in cemeteries around Washington state. For now, if you could send a brief account of your experience, I'll contact you privately later to discuss details. -------------- Andrea D. 1. Re: [WALEWIS-L] Request for cemetery photos and stories for lecture
    2. My name is Sandra McBride, and I spent Saturday, the 17th of July in Lewis County. One of my objectives was to cover as many cemeteries as I could find to check out headstones for known family members. My only surprise was the Cemetery in Ethel, WA. Supposedly my great great grandmother was reported to have been buried there, but when I found the cemetery, only about 15 or so (I didn't exactly count) headstones were to be found. The cemetery appeared to have many indentations, showing people were in fact perhaps buried there, but who???? Who would be holding burial permits, etc.? It was kept up, that is mowed, etc. but was disappointed that I found no relatives there, mainly because of no headstones. Thank you for lettimg me express my frustrations. Sandra McBride
