    1. [WALEWIS-L] Grave markers at e-bay
    2. Peter M. & Andrea D. MacDonald
    3. Hello all, Before a thread starts on the subject of funerary objects being auctioned at e-bay, please consider this: Often, when a stone is cut incorrectly and a new one is ordered, the incorrect stone stays with the family. Often, when ashes are scattered, the urn stays with the family. Often, when a new headstone or marker is bought by descendents or a veterans group/lineage society, the old stone stays with the family. Please consider these things when seeing objects being sold or auctioned. The item may belong to the family, we cannot jump to the conclusion that it is stolen. Andi

    1. [WALEWIS-L] reposting SCHMITT/WRIGHT/MALEY
    2. Carol Lopez
    3. I'm reposting this in hopes that someone new has joined the list and might have infor: Looking for information on my Lewis county families. Margaret or Marggaret WRIGHT, daughter of Joseph Andrew "Andy" WRIGHT and mother's surname may have been DOAN. Margaret b: April 4,1877 married Lemuel MALEY (son of Elizabeth SCHMITT COX MALEY) m:July 08, 1894 at JA Wright's home, I believe in Chehalis. Found Lewis Co. marriage certificate for Margaret (Maggie R.) & Lemuel in Chehalis court house. Margaret and Lemuel had 7 children, 5 of them born in Winlock, Napavine & Chehalis area Also looking for information on Elizabeth SCHMITT COX MALEY b:December 5,1836 in Georgia d:May 18, 1906 maybe in Vancouver, WA, but buried in the Napavine, WA cemetery, at least we found a head stone that we believe to be hers. Elizabeth first married COX and had at least 1 child named Will Cox. Will Cox had 3 children, believe their names were Ollie Cox, Oscar Cox & Elizabeth (Liza) COX KIRKLAND . Second marriage was to Joseph Edwin MALEY m: 1862 in Arkansas. Believe Elizabeth b: 1836 and her children including Will COX moved back to Washington after 1880. I haven't been able to find any thing on Elizabeth SCHMITT COX MALEY siblings or ancestor or on Joseph Andrew "Andy" WRIGHT . I understand that there are still WRIGHT'S AND SCHMITT'S living in the area that are related. I just recently found record of the marriages of Joseph Maley, then his grandson Justice Roscoe Maley showed up on the new LDS family searh site, so did Joseph but they have him born in Arkansas and not VA. Would appreciate any help. Thank You Carol

    1. [WALEWIS-L] Vendor's Fair
    2. Sharon Neem
    3. Would it be appropriate for me to bring to your Vendor's Fair on May 15, 1999 memorabilia of Lewis Co. residents that I am trying to find a home for? They date c. 1890-1920. My late mother-in-law, Eulalie Kahler Ferguson (1893-1977), grew up in Centralia and left a trunk full of family photos and many other items, including things that don't belong to the Kahler family but were probably of friends of their family. I would love to find ancestors of these people and give the items to them. Incidentally, Eula's father owned the first grocery store in Centralia. If this is appropriate to display at your Vendor's Fair, could you please tell me how to go about it? We live in Blaine, WA and thought we would attend the Fair. Thanks for your help. Sharon Neem

    1. Re: [WALEWIS-L] Vendor's Fair / Ferguson
    2. Sharon - I noticed your reference to the Ferguson name. I have Jesse Ferguson (1824 - 1900) married Margaret Jane Rutledge (1830 - 1861) (she was my gr-grandfather's sister). If you think there could be a connection, let me know and I'll send you more names on this. They were born in Ohio, and came here to Thurston Co. in the mid 1800s. 1. [WALEWIS-L] REPOST - McAtee Family in Centralia
    2. Looking for any information (and hopefully a cousin), of the McAtees who were in or around the Centralia area at least by 1880. They showed like this on that census Washington Territory - Lewis County - Enum. D. 18, 1880 Census MCATEE, Ezra 42 IL MCATEE, Annie 34 Prussia MCATEE, Melvina 14 IL MCATEE, John W. 11 IL MCATEE, Theresa 4 WT MCATEE, Frederick 2 WT MCATEE, Thomas 4/12 Two more children were born later, my grandmother Mary (Marie) E. who married Walter W. Peterson and the baby George. George had a pool hall, I believe it was called the "Nimble Nickel" on Tower Ave. in the 1930s. Theresa married Robert Stapleton and moved to Monroe, WA. Melvina married Joseph Birchall, and I think they lived in the Grays Harbor area. Marie and Walter Peterson lived on Waunch Prairie. Hoping a name or two may be familiar to some of you. 1. [WALEWIS-L] Washington State Archives NW Branch
    2. John & Arlene Planinshek
    3. Olympia is one of five regional archives in this state and operates under the Office of the Secretary of State. The archives operate under the general records act, RCW 40:14. The other four regional archives are located in Ellensburg, Bellingham, Cheney and Bellevue. Basically the system, which started in the early 1970s, was established to collect, preserve and make available local public records, of lasting historical value, in the region in which they were created. SW (Southwest) has the oldest documentation, reaching back to 1847 (a Lewis County Commissioners record). The archives are also charged with providing records management consultations to public government entities; it is through the records scheduling process that future archival/historical records will largely come into our holdings. The archives are available for post-disaster and disaster prevention consultation. All regional archives offer tours and research services. In addition to the usual requirements of the job, there are other services that are unique to the operation, these include: Opening the doors on selective Saturdays for genealogical groups to undertake intensive research; oral interviewing of individuals who have had a significant impact on local community life; and, the three regional archivists now carry video and 35mm cameras on the road and between official visits record the evolution of Southwest Washington. The SW Regional Archives serves all public entities (including county and city governmental offices, ports, p.u.d.s, fire districts, educational school districts and school districts, health districts as well as diking and water districts). Records stored in the archives which are especially useful for genealogists include: marriage, birth and death records, wills, probate and civil documentation, property records, census data, extensive educational documentation, deeds and mortgages and naturalizations. The Archives are open for research 8:30 to 4:30 daily (and periodically for group research on Saturdays). The Archive staff consists of Lanny Weaver (assistant), Terri Juillerat (customer services specialist) and myself, Wayne Lawson (Regional Archivist). It is best if potential researchers call in advance to schedule their time here; sometimes all three of us are out of the office. My phone number is 360-753-1684. Research is generally handled by either Lanny or Terri at 360-586-4898. Our Fax number is 360-664-8814. These are our basic charges: (1) If we do the research --- $10 minimum or $25 an hour, $0.15 per page copied, $3 mailing and, if needs be, $5 for certification; or (2) if the researcher comes into our archives the only costs would be --- $0.15 per page copied and $5 if certification is needed. The address of the Archives is: Archives & Records Management Division Office of the Secretary of State 1120 Washington Street SE * P.O. Box 40238 Olympia, WA. 98504-0238

    1. [WALEWIS-L] Washington State Legislation passes the House and Senate
    2. Peter M. & Andrea D. MacDonald
    3. The information below my signature was sent by Representative Patricia Lantz and received this morning. Another unanimous vote for our legislation! Again; the bill requires county auditors to track cemeteries within Washington as they do all other properties and to identify cemeteries as such on titles/deeds/records. You can help by visiting our web site and looking through your county's page to see if you can provide a location for the cemeteries listed there. Once a cemetery is identified as a specific piece of property (or on a specific piece of private land), the county auditor will be notified by our association and the appropriate title or deed will be notated (this WILL take time!). Visit http://www.rootsweb.com/~wapsgs/WSCA/cemeteri.html . Once you have located a cemetery you would like to provide information for, click on 'Change a Cemetery' and submit the new information. If that doesn't work send an email to andimac@oz.net . I'd like to thank each of you who have helped WSCA and myself -- without your help, I doubt we would have accomplished so much! Andi MacDonald ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------- Good news! On April 19, 1999, Substitute House Bill 1951, "Protecting Remains in Abandoned Cemeteries," passed the House Concurrence Calendar with a unanimous vote (97 Yeas, and 1 excused). The measure will now be sent to the governor for his action. Once that date is scheduled, we will be notified and, in turn, will notify you to come to the governor's office for the bill signing ceremony. Please know, all who assisted toward passage of this bill are welcome to be present for the bill signing, as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------

    1. [WALEWIS-L] WALEWIS-L Archives
    2. Jenny Tenlen
    3. Hi, all! I hope I'm not repeating information here, but I just wanted to pass along the fact that the WALEWIS-L Archives at Rootsweb is up and running. Every single message posted to the list, from the very first one sent by John, is automatically archived and searchable. So, if you have recently joined the list, you can still see if a query on your ancestor has already been posted! (This is yet another great reason to support Rootsweb). So, here's what to do: 1. Go to: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl 2. In the space for "Name of List", type: walewis 3. press the "Submit Query" button. You'll be taken to a new page, where you can type in your query in the "Query" space, then hit "Search". You'll then be taken to a list of all messages matching your query, which you can then click on and read. Incidentally, the URL given above works for other mailing lists at Rootsweb - so if you are on more than one Rootsweb list, you can simply type in the names of those lists to search their archives. Happy hunting! Jenny Tenlen Lewis Co., WA GenWeb coord. jennyrt@halcyon.com http://www.halcyon.com/jennyrt/walewis/walewis.html
