The following article was found in the Wilkes-Barre Record, 30 Mar 1893, Page 8. If anyone is interested in receiving a copy of this obituary, please send me your mailing address. (Since I'm not sure which Mailing List would cover the area in Wales mentioned in the article, I am submitting it to the General list in the hopes that it will be seen by a more diverse group. You have to forgive us Yanks for not knowing our Welsh geography! However, the spelling of these locations is strictly from the 1890's!) "THE LATE REV. JOSEPH REESE "Pastor of the Miner's Mills Presbyterian Church - Once a Missionary Among the Indians. "Rev. Joseph Reese of Miner's Mills, who died last Sunday morning, had reached the advanced age of 70 years. Mr. Reese had been pastor of the West Presbyterian Church of Miner's Mills for three years. He was born in Blaen-Avonmouthshire, Wales, on March 14, 1823. At the age of 19 he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Jones, with whom he continued to live happily until death separated them. "In 1841 Mr. and Mrs. Reese came to America, locating in Minersville, Schuylkill County. From Minersville they removed to Danville, remaining there three years. After this they went to Scranton, where, after a residence of five years, Mr. Reese received a call to a pastorate in Cattaraugus County, N.Y. Here he devoted himself to his work with so much earnestness that his reputation as a preacher spread rapidly and he was called to a more lucrative field in Minnesota, where he engaged in missionary work among the Indians for seventeen years. He was known among the red men as the "Little Man with the Big Heart." He organized eleven churches. In 1880 he returned to Scranton, where he took charge of the Welsh Presbyterian Church. He then went to Miner's Mills. "...[very flowery testament to Rev. Reese, but not genealogically important]...He leaves a widow aged seventy-five years and five married children to mourn his loss. The children are Mrs. Hugh Williams of Idaho, Mrs. Clarence Avery of Minnesota, Mrs. Owen Johnson of Dakota, Mrs. David C. Weinbrener of Philadelphia and Benjamin Rees [sic] of Waterville, Minnesota."
