REES "A Good Citizen and Industrious Business Man Passes Away. "John M. Rees, aged 63 years, one of the best known citizens of the Heights, died on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. He came to this city 23 years ago from Wales and worked as a miner. He was a butcher by trade but not until he became a full citizen did he open up in business. He conducted a successful business on East Market street for fourteen years and by his industry built up the business. [Very flowery prose, not relevant.] On Thursday afternoon, Sept. 29, he stated he was going for a walk, and in opening the lawn gate his daughter saw him stagger. Help was called and he was carried into the house. It was then discovered that he was stricken with paralysis. He suffered for a week and died yesterday. He was a worthy citizen and brought up the following family: Mrs. Robert Challis, East Market street; Mrs. William H. May, Retsof, NY; Mrs. Edward Martin, East Market street; and Rowland Rees, at home. "There are thirteen grandchildren besides. He was born at Caellean farm, near Llangadock, Wales, and for twenty years after resided at Hirwann, a mining town in Wales, until he emigrated. He was a member of the Welsh Presbyterian Church. "The funeral will take place on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. from the residence at the corner of Meade and East Market streets. Rev. Hugh Davis will conduct the services, assisted by Rev. W.D. Jenkins. Interment in Hollenback Cemetery."
