    3. Hi, I had a look on the 1881 Census and this is the only John Prothero I could find living in Cardiff, there were others in other parts of Glamorganshire. I know the name doesn't have the "e" on the end but that isn't a problem. Sometimes it was due to the fact that the people living in the dwelling were unable to read and write and the enumerator would have to guess. The number after the M [Male] F[Female] is the age of the peson in 1881. [R] is the relationship of the person to the Head of the household. You might find a clue from this if any of the names were used in the following generations of the family.     3. Margaret, Thank you for this information. The name Catherine did not appear in later generations, but that does not necessarily mean anything. I will see if I can get hold of his death certificate, which may have his parents names and therefore confirmation of those on the census.
