    1. [WALES-GEN] SHROPSHIRE LOOK-UPS/WALES BORDER COUNTIES - FOURTH MESSAGE
    2. Graham Price
    3. Hi all. Busy day. Sorry, but I'll have to cut down on the enquiries for long lists of the same surname at various parishes - takes far too much time and other folk are waiting for theirs. But, I'll give you what I can. Meanwhile, here's today's results: SHREWSBURY, St. Chad's and St. Mary's. Don't have Holy Trinity or St. Alkmund, sad to say. Ernie Careswell looking for Careswell. He's to be found on <carrenaus@yahoo.com.au> Ernie there were far too many Casewell's etc. to be taken down, but here are those listed under Carswell. ST. MARY: p302. 26 Jun 1721 Thomas Caswell and Frances Hayward married p344. Cornelius s.o Hugh Cass... buried p380. 1Jun 1748 Thomas Caswell and Mary Roberts married p390. 10 Aug 1751 Isaac Caswell buried p404. 8 Sep 1756 Thomas Carswell from jayl buried p433. 29 Sep 1766 Elizabeth Caswell buried p434. 11 Jan 1767 John s/o Thos. (slim pickings, indeed!) ST. CHAD: p926. 15 Apr 1726 Jno Caswell and Ann Hosby married p1359. 7 Oct 1776 Carswell Geo: Danl: s. of Frans. and Priscilla bap. Born the 4th p1434. 30 May 1783 Carswell Elizabeth w/o Richard christened (sic) p1495. 10 Jun 1788 Carswell Geo. 80, buried p1496. 18 Aug 1788 Carswell Frances d/o Francis and Priscilla bap. Born 16 July p1679. 27 Sep 1805. Careswell buried (sic) p1776. 17 Jan 1762. Thomas Carswell p. of Newport and Eliz' Spoonley married by lic. Ken Richards in Toronto of cold Canada on <krichard@interlog.com> was looking for a John Richards b. c.1806 and wife Catherine nee Pugh b. c.1816 at Shrewsbury. Catherine is too late for these registers, being completed in 1812 in this book form, although there was one Catherine bap. 1812 p638. Catherine d/o Thomas and Sarah Pugh, residence C. foreg. publican, born 18 Mar. (St. Mary's). No John Richards of reasonable time found in St. Chads, and in St. Mary's only: p591. 25 Dec 1805 John s/o Thomas Pritchard, Cotton Hill, taylor and Mary, born 10th p615. 19 Jan 1809 John s/o Thomas and Anne Richards, chair maker, Cross, born 28 Oct 1808. Remember, Ken, the 1841 census from which you took the details, rounded ages of adults off in periods of five years, so this John would have been 33 by then, and would have been written down as 35. Over to you. A possibility. Can you see a chair maker's son becoming a shoemaker! Maybe. More money in making shoes, perhaps? You have to keep replacing them, whereas chairs tend to stick around from generation to generation. Sherry Bonneau on <rsbonneau@shaw.ca> has just entered the arena, but as I had the St. Chad regs in my hand, she receives a quick reply. Sherry was looking for a William Morris whose son Edward was christened 25 Nov 1796. Very slim pickings here, Sherry. Only: 25 Nov 1796 Morris, Edward s/o William & Elizabeth (Hills Lane) born the 8th inst. christened. 22 Jul 1783 William Morris and Elizabeth Davies, married. (No others) Well, that's something, anyway. ST. MARTINS parish: Jane McIntosh on <mcintosh@icr.com.au> wanted info on William Roberts who was a miller in Chirk and who was 73 years old when he died Oct 1820. Possible St. Martins link. The only ones I could glean from St. Martins, Jane, are these: p163. 27 Dec 1744 William s/o John Roberts by Elizabeth his wife, baptized p165. 31 Aug 1744 William s/o William Roberts by Elizabeth his wife, baptized p175. 29Feb 1756 William s/o John Roberts, collier of The Rock, and Catherine, baptized Pam Gardner on <pam.gardner@btinternet.com> was looking for any DRYHURST folk in Oswestry. Well, Pam, I have looked through three volumes of Oswestry, and none appear, but there is one more volume, which is the first one, and which I will be able to access within the following week. BUT, here are some I found in ST. MARTINS. They certainly were very early folk in the district! p81. 18 Maii 1599 Hugo ap John Drihurst sep (buried) p81. 28 Maii 1599 Margaretta vz John Drihurst sep p125. 14 Sep 1595 Johes Drihurst et Elena vz Edward nupt. (I guess that is John Dryhurst and Helena Edwards married!) Now, we're in trouble! I commenced the HIGH ERCALL regs. and am still on them and will still be on them come tomorrow. So, after all, there weren't six volumes, but three, and they are in a sad state of affairs, not having had hard-board covers originally they are tending to fall apart, so one has to be very gentle with the pages. Anyway, when you look at the transcribings there are some very interesting things happening in High Ercall. I don't think it was a dull place to live in at all. There are some very intrigueing family happenings. And so to work! Sue Burton on <sue.burton@btinternet.com> wanted DOVASTON and variations. Yes, this has led us down a merry path. One needs to use some of Edward de Bono's thinking processes here. Follow this carefully. You could write a novel about this! p594. 29 Dec 1805 Edward a base child of Elizabeth Dovaston baptized p660. 3 Aug 1813 William Wood p. of Wrockwardine and Mary Sambrook (with consent of parents) married. Wit: Samuel Sambrooke and Elizabeth Doveston (* see further Sambooke's below) p667. 10 Sep 1820 William Prior and Elizabeth Dovaston married. Wit. Joseph Hayward and Emma Eaton. p681. 15 Nov 1837. Edward Doveston of full age, bach, laborer, Sugdon (father's name not given) and Ellen Peplow, of full age, sp. servant, Marsh Green, father Samuel Peplow, laborer, married. Susan Evans Shaw on <susan@nas.net> has some more Ash folks: There are some very interesting happenings here, also. 27 Dec 1750 William Ash from Ellerdine buried 7 Jun 1763 William of John Ash of Ellerdine baptized 23 Mar 1772 William Ashe snr. of Ellerdine buried 13 Mar 1777 Martha d/o Samuel Sambrook of Obaston baptized 30 Sep 1777 Martha d/o Samuel Sambrook of Obaston buried 14 Aug 1796 William s/o William Ash of Ellardine baptized 25 Nov 1798 Thomas s/o William Ash of Ellardine Heath baptized 8 Mar 1801 Andrew - as above 2 Nov 1803 Richard - as above [Thomas Ash & Martha Sambrook married. Wit. William Ash and Martha Owen] I missed the date, but will retrieve it. There were no baptisms from this marriage in High Ercall parish. I am wondering if this Martha Sambrook was a further daughter of Samuel Sambrook of Obaston, considering that the "first" Martha died. If so, the second Martha was not baptized at High Ercall. It may well be that another child named Martha was born and survived as the mother died in childbirth: viz: 20 Aug 1778 E--- w/o Samuel Sambrooke of Obastan buried. p626. 14 Jan 1772. Samuel Sambrook and Elizabeth Karr married. Witness William Sambrook and F.S. Further Sambrook details: p608. 31 Mar 1811 William s/o William Sambrook of Walton, baptized p608. 6 Apr 1811 Margaret d/o William Sambrook of Walton, buried p611. 23 Oct 1812 William of William Sambrook of Cotwell Fields, buried p619 25 Jul 1763 William Sambrook and Catharine Aaron married. Wit. Samuel Sambrook and John Pagett p690 15 Oct 1787 Samuel Sambrook and Mary Jones married. Wit. F.S. and Thos. Sambrook 25 Mar 1819 William Sambrook (widr) and Ann Lawrence (wid) married. wit. Francis Light (wonder if he was Sir. Francis Light of Penang, Malaya, and Straits Settlements, fame??) Jane Dabbs, and John Paget. That's all for now. Continuing High Ercall tomorrow. Cherrio Graham
