Hi folks Bush fires are running out of control in New South Wales - many homes burnt to the ground, animals lost, worst for over 20 years in New South wales. Thousand of people were trapped along beach resorts. Can you imagine that - the fires coming towards you and nowhere to go but into the sea! Horrific. The thousands of firefighters are doing an amazing job, but it goes to prove that no one is every really ready for this kind of thing. One big problem for Australia is that most of the trees are eucalyptus, and eucalyptus burns like a nightmare gone wrong. I know that you are all thinking and praying for the folk here who are in danger. Thanks so much for that. Our State of Victoria firefighters have gone to NSW to help out. God bless them. And so to today's revelations in genealogy. Winding down. Fred AINSWORTH, a new chum on the Salop list, on <Ainsworth706@aol.com> was interested in a Thomas and Charlotte (BARCLAY) CADAWALLADER in Ludlow and environs. I had a look at the transcriptions of the register, Fred, and found there were indeed some Cadawallader folk at Ludlow parish, but unfortunately, no Charlotte Barclay as such. Still, I have reserved these "registers" for Sunday morning, so will be copying down all the Cadawallader's for you. At least, that will be something. Like you said "....to locate my Charlotte Barclay, a formidable lady methinks." If anyone else needs some LUDLOW lookups, now is the time to ask, before Sunday morning Australian eastern standard time!!!! No long lists, though, please. Jan Jones of Winnepeg, Canada, talking to frosty the snowman wanted Susan/Susannah PASSEY around 1810-15 in the Little Hereford area. Also Edward COLTON, and Ellen Ann KNIGHT near Westbury. You can eliminate these parishes from your search, Jan, as I looked at these and could find nothing of any of them: Cleobury Mortimer, Willey, Burford, Neen Solars, Milson, Church Preen, Oldbury, and Badger, the last seven of these places being in the one volume - made things easier. They are also not to be found in Westbury. You sure have a search on your hands here! Don't give up. Jan is found on <jjones@autobahn.mb.ca> I notice a new starter on the Salop list by name of Colin Hill on <ichill@BTopenworld.com> searching for various HODGKISS folk mainly in Coreley, Salop. Corely is close to Cleobury Mortimer, so checked that out - none. You can also cross off the above-mentioned churches from your list, Colin, as they were not in any of these either. Very strange, this one. You'd think at least some of the children would have been baptized or married (or even buried) in nearby churches, but obviously not. Must have all been baptized, etc. at Coreley. We don't have the Coreley regs here, unfortunately. It was worth a try with the other churches, though. Here's something, hopefully of use: Bernard Mantell in Hampshire, UK, on <bernard@bmantell.freeserve.co.uk> was looking for his gg-grandfather James Mantel (or Mantle) alleged in the 1851 census to have been born in 1771 at Cleobury Mortimer. Well, considering that they rounded the ages of adults in the 1841 census, and may have slipped up a little in the 1851 census, Bernard, we may perhaps have found your James, though not in Cleobury, but possibly in Hopton Wafers just down the road.
