"Mrs. Catherine Griffith, one of the best known residents of the county, died yesterday at her home, 27 North Sherman street, after an illness of six days of paralysis, aged 77 years. She was the widow of the late Nathaniel Griffith, who was killed by accident in March 1877. She was also a sister-in-law of the late ex-county treasurer, John T. Griffith. Mrs. Griffith came from Cwmglo, Merthyr Tydvil, Wales, (a beautiful spot where stand the ruins of one of the oldest non-conformist churches in Wales) with her father, Benjamin Evans, and family 70 years ago, and settled in Cumbola, Schuylkill County. She was married July, 1840, and brought up the following children: The late Mrs. Henry H. Jones of the Heights, Mrs. Daniel W. Evans, wife of superintendent Daniel W. Evans of Williamstown, Pa.; Mrs. Thomas Kerr of Plymouth; undertaker Benjamin F. Griffith of Nanticoke; Mrs. Daniel D. Roderick of Pottsville; and Miss Kate S. Griffith, who resided with her mother. She leaves also twenty-eight grand-children and seven great-grandchildren.... [Remainder deals with funeral arrangements.]" Nancy Cook Pasadena, MD, USA
