Hi folks In response to an enquiry on the POWYS list, I thought the following would be of interest to everyone. Considering there is so much confusion with all these Llansantffraid/Llansantffraed's, etc. I thought I would dig up a list of them so that we can then know where each one is. This is taken from Bartholomew's 1904 Gazetteer, compiled from the 1901 census - is that a bad word at present? Llansaintffraid, ry.sta., Cam(brian) R., five and a half m. E. of Llanfyllin Llansaintfffraid yn Mechan, eccl. dist., Llansaintffraid par., Montgomeryshire; pop 835 Llansaintfraed, par. and seat, Monmouthshire, on river Usk, four and a half miles SE of Abergavenny; 290 acres, pop. 10. (Ehh! Is that right - ten??) Llansantffraid, par. and vil., Cardiganshire, in NW. of co--par., 4707 acres, pop. 905; vil., 11 miles SW of Aberystwyth: P.O. Llansantffraid Glan Conway, par. and vil., Denbighshire, on river Conway; 5281 acres, pop. 1127. has mineral spring. Llansantffraid Glyn Ceiriog, par. and vil., Denbigshire, in S. of co.--par., 5949 acres, pop. 994; vil., 2 miles SW of Llangollen; P.O; T.O; called Glyn. There are mfrs. of flannels; and also stone and slate quarries. Llansantffraid Glyn Dyfrdwy, par. and vil., Merioneth in NE of co., 2 miles E of Corwen sta.; 679 acres, pop. 176. Llansantfraed, par. Brecknockshire, in SE. of co., on river Usk and Brecon Canal, 7 miles SE. of Brecknock; 2209 acres, pop. 191 Llansantfraed in Elvel, par. and seat, Radnorshire, on river Edw, four and a half miles NE. of Builth; 4717 acres, pop. 230. Llansantffraid Cwmdeuddwr, par., W. Radnorshire, 1 mileW. of Rhayader; 39,172 acres, pop. 1279. See Radnorshire. Llansantffraid Deythur, par., NE. Montgomeryshire 6 miles E. of Llanfyllin; 2816 acres, pop. 440; P.O.; T.O., called Llansaintffraid. Llansantffraid Pool, par., NE Montgomeryshire, six and a half miles E. of Llanfyllin; 3471 acres, pop. 729. Well, that certainly warms things up. I thought there were only four! Note the different spellings! That taught me something - so none of us will refer to them ever again as simply Llansanffraid? Will we? Toodle-oo Graham P.S. I now have at home a photocopy of the 1830 Pigot's Directory of NORTH WALES if anyone wants anything looked up. Admittedly, it does not give you much, only the principal towns and the principal business folk - in the main. 1830 Pigot's was only divided into North & South - chopped the county in two! Bit like America in the old days.
