"Mrs. Elizabeth Evans, over whose head sixty-one summers have passed, committed suicide last night at the home of her son, John Hundon. "Nine months ago Mrs. Evans became a widow. Since then her health has been poor, and she became despondent over the death of her husband. Life seemed to her a dreary existence, although her sons tried to cheer her continually. It was this despondency which caused her to take her life. "Mrs. Evans was around the house all day. About 8 o'clock in the evening Mr. and Mrs. Hundon left the house to call on Mrs. Hundon's sister, Mrs. John Davis, who is quite ill. Mrs. Evans was left in charge of the children of the household. On the return of Mr. and Mrs. Hundon they went to the door of the old lady's room to bid her good night. They received no answer, and as the door was tightly closed, suspicion of something wrong flashed across their minds. Mr. Hundon tried to open the door, and moving it a few inches passed his arm inside the room. His hand touched a cold body against the door. Then he felt a rope, and realizing what had happened, he quickly cut the rope. The body fell on the floor in such a way as to prevent opening the door. Constable John Davis then entered the room through a window and removed the body. "The deceased was born in Rhymney, South Wales, and came here with her husband in October, 1879. She is survived by four sons, William and John Hundon of Scranton, David Hundon of Washington and Walter Evans of Scranton." Nancy Cook Pasadena, MD, USA
