Davis, one of the oldest inhabitants of Duryea, died suddenly yesterday morning. Mr. Davis was born seventy years ago in the parish of Caio, Carmarthenshire, South Wales. From there he and his wife and children emigrated to this country in 1853 and located at a place called then Head of Canal, now a part of Duryea, and lived in the same spot until he died. Mr. Davis buried his first wife in 1872, and in 1874 he married the second wife, who was killed on the railroad in 1891. His first wife bore him ten children, seven of whom are alive. William, the oldest son, and his wife kept house for him. Thomas, who lives in Black Diamond, Washington; James O. of Nanticoke; Mrs. Elijah Thomas of Plymouth; Mrs. Rees B. Davis of Scranton, Mrs. John M. Lewis of Dedham, Iowa; and Mrs. Henry Beddoe of Nanticoke are the other children. The second wife bore him three children, one of whom is John G., who lives at home. The deceased was a devout Christian all his lifetime, and was a member of the Welsh M.E. Church. He was a total abstainer all through life and never used tobacco in any form. He was one of the oldest subscribers of the Y Drych, having taken it continually for forty-four years. Funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with interment at Marcy Cemetery."
