ST. MARY'S SHREWSBURY: Interesting. There are three very fat volumes (about three and a half inches thick) of the transcriptions by the Shropshire Parish Register Society for St. Chads, but only one for St. Mary's. Looking for a SHERRY connection. No luck, Lynda over there in blizzardly cold Canada. Sorry. Looking for a connection for PRICHARD and possibly any deVisschers. Nothing found, Patti. Regrets. But for Pat Hughes on <pat@pahughes.fsnet.co.uk> who lives in Hampshire, UK and was wondering where the snow was for Christmas, and is researching POPPITT, here's something: p274 1 Feb 1712 Roberts /o Robert Poppett labr. on ye Old Heath baptized (the minister should have been more careful, because some bleary-eyed folk might interpret labr. as short for labrador!) p283. 5 Jun 1715 Richard s/o Robert Poppit baptized p297. 21 Jan 1720 Thomas s/o Elizabeth Poppitt, wid, buried p709. 29 Apr 1794 John Everal and Mary Pugh married. wit. Anyone wanting specific look-ups from these two publications please email me as soon as possible, as these books are located in an off-site storage facility and have to be specially ordered and then transported into the library. This is a once off, so if you are too late with your email, as they say - tough! Bush fires in New South Wales now sort of under control. Sure is a large patch of burnt earth. Bye for now Graham
Hi everyone Today's gleanings; Lynda Rimas, in what she terms is blizzardly cold Amaranth, Canada, on <Rimas@sympatico,ca> asked me to keep an eye out for a Richard SHERRY born c.1804 at ST. CHAD'S SHREWSBURY. He did a runner, Lynda - no sign of him at all - didn't want anyone to be pouring water on his head at the font and certainly did not want to be married or buried there either. Perhaps the smog and smoke of the city was too much for him! Have to get the geny detectives onto this one. But, there were some interesting developments at St. Chad, nevertheless. Patti Flyn Heimsness on <pattiflynn@lycos.com> was very good at giving her Pritchard details at St. Chad's, and wanted to know if some of the female children of Samuel & Mary Pritchard had survived to marry. I rather enjoyed this one. Patti, here are all the details that will dovetail into what you already have, and you may get a few surprises. By the way, there were "millions" of Pritchards at St. Chad's. Rather exhausting just to look at them! Rather like Smith down south! :)) p1282 6 Jan 1767 Richard s/o Samuel and Mary Pritchard baptized. p1295 10 Aug 1768 Samuel - as above p1309. 22 Jun 1770 William - as above p1327. 14 Jul 1772 Mary - as above - but now the register lists the parents as Mr. Samuel and Mrs. Mary Pritchard. Obviously they had attained some higher level of social significance in the community by that date! Patti tells me that Samuel was a Burgess. p1340. 30 Sept 1774 Ann d/o Samuel & Mary Pritchard baptized (I note you have her listed as Hannah. Depends what records you read, I guess!) p1355. 1 Jul 1776 Edward - as above p1361. 7 Jan 1777 John - as above - (Samuel is now listed as "hatter." A gentlemen's hatter, no doubt! Doesn't that put a spin on things?) p1363. 23 Feb 1777 Maria d/o Samuel and Elean: (sic) Pritchard, baptized THIS IS INTERESTING! p1377. 18 May 1778 Elizabeth d/o Samuel and Mary Pritchard baptized. Born 24th April p1389. Laetitia d/o Samuel & Eleanor, baptized, born 14th. Woops - forgot to write down the date. Must have been, just at that time, the thunder rolled and I looked up through the clear glass roof to see the grey clouds rolling by. :)) Didn't rain, anyway. Shame. Anyway, she doesn't belong to Samuel and Mary, so let's just forget her for the time being. Poor Laetitia. Probably a cousin. p1408. 18 Mar 1781 Martha d/o Samuel and Mary Pritchard, baptized p1413. 13 Jul 1781 Maria d/o Samuel and Eleanor Pritchard of Franl, baptized. (I reckon that this is Frankwell, wherever that might be!) p1420. 20 Jan 1782 Samuel s/o Samuel and Eleanor Pritchard baptized, born 4th p1424. 19 Jun 1782 Frances d/o Samuel and Mary Pritchard baptized, born 18th (Nice to have the birth dates, is it not?) p1446. 7 Jul 1784 Laetitia d/o Samuel and Mary Pritchard baptized, born 25 June p1462. 18 Oct 1785 Sarah - as above, no date of birth given p1488. 21 Oct 1787 Priscilla - as above, born 7th p1551. 25 Oct 1793 Samuel s/o Mr. Samuel and Ann Pritchard (Corn Market) baptized, born 25 Oct. (Son of Samuel born 1768???) p1745. 2 Aug 1811 Samuel Pritchard aged 59 buried (no wonder, after siring all those chidlren! He must have been exhausted!) p1784. 22 Dec 1765 Samuel Pritchard and Mary Harris married by licence p1799. 5 Oct 1773 Samuel Pritchard and Eleanor Brownhill married p1832. 22 Jun 1789 Samuel Pritchard and Elizabeth Hill married p1884. 25 Feb 1805 Samuel Pritchard and Ann Nickless [signs Nicholass] married. Wit. John Hughes and John Saxon jnr. (possibly connected with St. Chad's) No more entries concerning a Samuel Pritchard in the transcribed register. Re. the children p1538. 30 Aug 1792 Lett. Pritchard age 13 buried p1507. 3 Sep 1789 Mary Pritchard buried (could be an elder person, of coursel) p1907. 4 Dec 1810 Francis Pritchard parish of Buttington, Montgomeryshire, and Elizabeth Hughes married. Wit. Thomas Humphrey and Martha Pritchard. (Seems the younger Martha survived at least to this date. What is the connection to Buttington, near Welshpool? Cousin, perhaps?). The other girls obviously married later, or married out of the parish. Transcripts end 1812. Patti was also interested in Mary Harris's mother - a Mary deVisschers and wondered what this latter name was. Well, seems to be Flemish or Dutch as in De Visscher - DeViss(ch)er, and possibly, but not necessarily, Jewish. Eventually comes down most likely to Visser, and then to the common English version of Fisher. So, all you Fisher's out there (apart from those named so because of their occupation) look to Belgium and Holland for your possible earlier heritage! Have fun searching, anyway! Mike McCarthy on <MMccar2080@aol.com> needed some help with an Edward Owen b. 28 Oct 1756, at Albrighton. Not much, I'm afraid, Mike, but these two entries at ALBRIGHTON. p34. 8 Nov 1807 Thomas s/o Edward Owen and Charlotte baptized p36. 28 Jul 1812 Sarah d/o Edward Owen and Charlotte baptized Justine ORME on <ormefam@extra.co.nz> was buttering me up with promises of strawberry jam, etc., but wanted some info re. Edward Vaughan who married an Ann somebody, before 1670 and were resident at Crickheath around that time. Ahh, well, Justine, I figured that very close by was the parish of Kinnerley (a very much used parish for baptisms and marriages) where my BATHER's hailed from, and if one was lucky......... very lucky........ Anyway, you may be lucky by default. Although there was no listing of your Edward and Ann, there were some very interesting entries of Vaughans there, who are probably connected. p1. 16 Jun 1677 Mary ye wife of Rich. Perhaps he switched to being a Methodist later on, they were great at detail!) p242. 8 Feb 1795 John s/o Thomas Morris and Catharine (formerly Vaughan) lab., of Maesbrook Ucha, baptized. Born 6th Feb. p264. 16 Oct 1808 Elizabeth d/o Richard Morris and Elizabeth (formerly Vaughan) of Maesbrook, shoemaker, baptized. Born 17 Sep. Compliments: the Clwyd Family History Society researchers, typists, collators, readers, printers, etc. Lovely folk. You don't get much better than this! Ta ta Sleep tight Graham (bush fires abating, thank goodness) N.B. I have found numerous errors in the indexes of these Shopshire Parish Registers as transcribed by the Shropshire Parish Register Society which was mainly in the very early 1900s, and at least, as far as I can gather up to 1936, in that - in the index the person by that name is just not there on the page. Blank, blank, so to speak. Again, when discovering persons by random methods, they appear on the page of baptisms, etc. with their parents, but they do NOT appear in the index. (So, we are all human, are we not, and we all make mistakes.) One Priscilla Pritchard, though shown on the transcribed pages ofthe register, does not appear anywhere in the index. Thus, after her recorded baptism, if she died and it was not recorded in the index, how on earth would you find her burial? So, what is the lesson to be learnt from this? As always, go back to the original registers, go back to the microfilms provided by the LDS folk where you will see with your own individual eyes the early papers with the original ink entries. It is all very well to rely upon transcriptions, and transcriptions from transcriptions, but in the end the only real satisfaction you can have, and the only way to prove things out, is to get the original registers in your very own hands. Otherwise, you may be barking up the wrong tree! Personally, I have never accepted anything without having proved it out eventually with the original registers. Remember this also, every time you look at the IGI. I respect it. It is a great and marvellous tool, but it is not perfect. It was put together by humans with the same faults and frailites that you and I have. Let's face it - errors abound in genealogy. Probably more so than you would care, or like, to think.
Hello, all ... I have just joined this list and would like to cast my bread upon the waters, so to speak ... I am trying to trace my g-g-grandfather's brother, George LLOYD. (I've accounted for the vitals on my g-g-grandfather, Evan LLOYD, b. ca. 1799, although any links/info there would be deeply appreciated!!) Both brothers were born in Llanelli Parish in Breconshire, and moved to Aberystruth Parish in Monmouthshire as children. Their parents were Evan LLOYD and Elizabeth LEWIS. Evan married Mary SMITH (and his older sister, Ann, married Benjamin SMITH, who was possibly Mary's brother). I can't find a marriage or burial record for George, the fourth child, so don't know where he ended up. Evan lived in Nantyglo and Cwm Celyn before emigrating to Pennsylvania in 1841. The family men were all miners. Other siblings were: Thomas LEWIS/LLOYD (base born in 1795), who married Anne THOMAS. Richard LLOYD, (b? -- probably the 5th child) married Mary GILBERT, John LLOYD, (b 1806), married ?? Mary LLOYD, b. 1808, married Denis JAMES and Seth LLOYD, b. 1810, married?? If anybody knows anything about the fates of George, John or Seth, I would be very grateful. Right now, I'm concentrating on George. Thank you!! Beth in Los Angeles, CA, USA
Hi there. Being new to this list, I thought I would forward this plea - if you've seen it elsewhere, my apologies. I am stuck !! Perhaps now, some of these names will ring a bell somewhere. Hi all, another successful day for some, for others, well...... keep in there....... I was quite excited by this one. Ann from New Hampshire, U.S.A., is looking for CHALLENDER/CHALLINOR and associations and wondered if I could look in GRESFORD, Denbighshire, for her. I failed to find your Edward Challender there, Ann, but there are very interesting associations there which I think you should record and think about. The Gresford regs are transcriptions from those lovely folk in the Clwyd Family History Society. Let's give them a clap! Cheers! Three cheers! Anyone out there with local knowledge of Christ Church??? I need it also, for my great-grandmother, Margaret Anne Rogers, nee Jones, who died 16th Nov 1870, buried 17th at Christ Church, and for a possible baptism of her husband's second wife, Margaret Jones born Marford Hoseley 18 Aug 1847. David Jenkins on <davesue@purplepeople.fsnet.co.uk> needed some info concerning a Priscilla SIMON and a Thomas BLYTHIN aged 21 in 1867 in the MOLD area. No luck with Thomas Blythin, David, none to be found there. We have only recently received further Clwyd FHS transcriptions of MOLD, but they finsih here at 1851. Also no sign of a baptism of a Priscilla Simon, going back to the 1820s. There is a family having children during the 1820s-30s father Josiah Simon and mother Priscilla. It is possible that this is the family and that the child Priscilla was baptized somewhere else. Sorry David. If you want the details of this SIMON family I can get them for you easily, as they are on the shelves and not hidden away in the stack. CADWALLADER/CADAWALLADER LUDLOW parish: Fred Ainsworth on <Ainsworth706@aol.com> is the main one interested. Beverley on <MRC@dunroamen.freeserve.co.uk> emailed me with a mentione that she had just dound aCadwallader connection, John Cadwallader 47 married an ancester of hers, an Eliza Farrall a widow at Coton Hill (the Farall rings a bell!) at St. Julians Shrewsbury, but no date. Mandy Buchanan on <mysticmandy_gingerwitch@hotmail.com> We do hope you are mystic, Mandy, we could all do with some of that in our research, and stir up a little bit of ginger every day - very good for the digestion! Well, Mandy very kindly came forward with another version of Cadwallader - Wallet! I expect that is correct, take the Cad out of Cadwallader and the er off the end and all you have left is Wallad, i.e. Wallet. There were no Wallat/Wallets in Ludlow however. I wonder if the Cadwallader was originally ap wallader? Someone might like to do some homework on that. HI ALL. Huh they at Channel 5 think they can worm their way out of putting a stop on the Teletext. The letter i got back was all matter of fact......... Your Reference: DO/50628/AMS (Please quote this reference in all furthercorrespondence) Thank you for your recent e-mail. 5 TEXT ceased to exist on the 31st December. Unfortunately, as the service was operating at a loss, both Channel 5 and BSKYB decided to cancel the licence. The licence has been put up for tender by the ITC (Independent Television Commission) and it is expected that the new licence will be awarded by April 2002 at the latest. Rest assured our business plans for 2002 are looking very successful, nevertheless we appreciate your concern. Please note that the contact details for the Channel 5 Duty Office are as follows: Telephone: 0845 7 05 05 05 Text telephone for use by deaf people: 0845 7 41 37 87 E-mail: dutyoffice@channel5.co.uk Fax: 020 7550 5678 And the Channel 5 website can now be found at: www.channel5.co.uk Thank you for your interest in Channel 5. Yours sincerely DUTY OFFICER This letter was sent to all that have written,so far. But little old me has gone one better and been nosing around...as one does and got hold of the email site of the big high and mighties that sit at the big tables and feed there fat cat pockets. So the address to moan and gripe at is; The address shown on the sky screen production@bskyb.com I have also come across this phone number still for the duty office but a number he ommitted to tell me...its; Channel 5 Duty Officer TEL: 020-7550-5555 My idea at present is to, to bombard these three with complaints that Tree Tops Genealogy service has been removed from Channel 5 Text. We, the supporters of Tree Tops should therefore send in as many messages to Tree Tops in order to make each weeks selection varied so that the powers that be can see what they are missing out on. This might help them realise that Genelogy should be taken more seriously. I did find out that you can still get Treetops and We'll meet again via sky,not sure if this is via cable in the U.K. or just by dish....If any of you can get this then please contact me off list. To contact Treetops for your messages then email; tree.tops@virgin.net I would like suggestions of how to try and get this important link back on....I know that it cannot be obtained in Wales anymore, and thats not fair!!! Kaz.
Hi folks Bush fires are running out of control in New South Wales - many homes burnt to the ground, animals lost, worst for over 20 years in New South wales. Thousand of people were trapped along beach resorts. Can you imagine that - the fires coming towards you and nowhere to go but into the sea! Horrific. The thousands of firefighters are doing an amazing job, but it goes to prove that no one is every really ready for this kind of thing. One big problem for Australia is that most of the trees are eucalyptus, and eucalyptus burns like a nightmare gone wrong. I know that you are all thinking and praying for the folk here who are in danger. Thanks so much for that. Our State of Victoria firefighters have gone to NSW to help out. God bless them. And so to today's revelations in genealogy. Winding down. Fred AINSWORTH, a new chum on the Salop list, on <Ainsworth706@aol.com> was interested in a Thomas and Charlotte (BARCLAY) CADAWALLADER in Ludlow and environs. I had a look at the transcriptions of the register, Fred, and found there were indeed some Cadawallader folk at Ludlow parish, but unfortunately, no Charlotte Barclay as such. Still, I have reserved these "registers" for Sunday morning, so will be copying down all the Cadawallader's for you. At least, that will be something. Like you said "....to locate my Charlotte Barclay, a formidable lady methinks." If anyone else needs some LUDLOW lookups, now is the time to ask, before Sunday morning Australian eastern standard time!!!! No long lists, though, please. Jan Jones of Winnepeg, Canada, talking to frosty the snowman wanted Susan/Susannah PASSEY around 1810-15 in the Little Hereford area. Also Edward COLTON, and Ellen Ann KNIGHT near Westbury. You can eliminate these parishes from your search, Jan, as I looked at these and could find nothing of any of them: Cleobury Mortimer, Willey, Burford, Neen Solars, Milson, Church Preen, Oldbury, and Badger, the last seven of these places being in the one volume - made things easier. They are also not to be found in Westbury. You sure have a search on your hands here! Don't give up. Jan is found on <jjones@autobahn.mb.ca> I notice a new starter on the Salop list by name of Colin Hill on <ichill@BTopenworld.com> searching for various HODGKISS folk mainly in Coreley, Salop. Corely is close to Cleobury Mortimer, so checked that out - none. You can also cross off the above-mentioned churches from your list, Colin, as they were not in any of these either. Very strange, this one. You'd think at least some of the children would have been baptized or married (or even buried) in nearby churches, but obviously not. Must have all been baptized, etc. at Coreley. We don't have the Coreley regs here, unfortunately. It was worth a try with the other churches, though. Here's something, hopefully of use: Bernard Mantell in Hampshire, UK, on <bernard@bmantell.freeserve.co.uk> was looking for his gg-grandfather James Mantel (or Mantle) alleged in the 1851 census to have been born in 1771 at Cleobury Mortimer. Well, considering that they rounded the ages of adults in the 1841 census, and may have slipped up a little in the 1851 census, Bernard, we may perhaps have found your James, though not in Cleobury, but possibly in Hopton Wafers just down the road. I have been looking for info on my 4 ggparents they were both born in Wales I am not sure where they both have a very common name in Wales even for the 1700 William Davies born in Wales 1776-1777 Sarah Evans Wales 1773 I do know they married in Wales or england 1798 an came to America shortly there after 1799-1800 I have gone through several documents in Pa where they settled none saying where in Wales they were from I do have a letter from there son James to there Atty. Asking about selling the property in Wales that was left to William Brother who was missing in the war for 15 years they were colecting rent on the Property in Wales The letter was written in 1843 about the Laywer going to wales an trying to sell the house and land Farm I would guess as they were all farmers an William Davies being to old to make the trip agian to Wales Can anyone give me anymore clues as to were to find these two missing reletives of mine of course I do not have a name for William Davies brother The letter just states that he had one in Wales with a family Farm Thanks Dotty Davis
Dear List, I would lkike to thank Graham Price and Margaret Harvey for the help they gave me, in finding my Jones ancestors. I was so excited yesterday I printed it off & reread it a dozen times.I think it's them. On my map Castell Caereinion is 5 miles north of Berriew, both on Crop Lane, where John Jones moved his family between Margaret & Williams birth. There is a town about 1 mile east of Berriew called Brooks, that maybe the key to the name Brooklane farm, maybe his father only worked there. He named his first farm in Cloverdale BC. Can. Brooklane farm, we lived next door. On my map I found Chirbury, Chirbury rd, Middleton & Churchstoke but not Todlith .In all they take up about a 20 mile area.I couldn'd find IRL in my abbreviations book. What relationship is Ann to John and William Chilton to Elizabeth?. Mother of John and brother to Elizabeth.?.What religion where they? I was baptized Anglican Jane Elizabeth. William Chilton Jones Jr 1887 built a church on his property, we wen! t there as the rest of the small community most of the time. William Chilton b.1847 and 2 other pioneers paid $100 for some land and put together a school of sorts in 1899.We had a reunion in 1999 to celebrate 100 years at East Kensinton School. Out of the reunion came a book with a whole history of the area.It would be interesting to access the 1861 census and see the names of any other children they had.John Henry Oliver Paul or Pryce LLewellen,or go back to 1841 to find Johnns parentage. They had williams & Evans cousins , I don't know what time frame. If any would lookup these censuses I would be grateful. Do people whose children emmigrate wonder about the families created on this side of the ocean I could be of help in that area. Thankyou everso much. Jane in BC. Can harold&jane@telus.net

Hi Mike, Congratulation on your find, your patience was rewarded. I have the 1881 Census on CD Rom just ask if you want me to look up John for you. Brymbo is an area of Wrexham or maybe a village in its own right. Wrexham is a large town in the old county of Denbighshire but now in Clwyd. It is not far from the Welsh border with Cheshire. Don't apologize for asking questions, this is the way we all learn about family history research. The whole idea of these "lists" is that we pool resources and knowledge. Hi all, I want to thank all for replying on my request, I now realise why I have such a great singing voice, and can drink like a fish, but play lousey rugby emmmmmmmmm. John Allington's Wife, Mary Elizabeth Roberts b. 1864'ish, states she was born in Summerhill, which I notice is not far from Brymbo, so the plot thickens. I will return to wales email when I find some info on my OWEN side Again Thanks Mike McCarthy A kiwi residing in the COLD USA
Me again, Here`s another who I imagine must be related. Your best bet is to subscribe to the Clwyd (Denbighshire) list and post your interests on there. Hi all, I am a new subscriber, after 6 hours being online with the 1901 census I finally managed to find some information about my ancestors. NOW, I Hope I don't upset anyone <gulp>, but is "Denbigh Brymbo" a Welsh town ?, I found Denbigh in welsh meaning "fort", so I'm hoping someone can assist me further. If it isn't I do apolygise and I'll leave with my head between my tail. The 1901 census showed me my ancestor JOHN ALLINGTON was borned in Denbigh Brymbo date 1860'ish. TIA Mike McCarthy

Howdy Getting near the end of things - the genealogical libraries will be open next week and I shall be back engrossed in my own tree/trees/work again, and life will (sort of) return to normal. Meanwhile, here is today's gleanings: Lucky, lucky, you should be so lucky! I wish I was young enough to prance around to that song! Well, I suppose I could, but I'd probably get some strange stares. Book concludes 1812. Thanks to all those who have been putting information concerning the 1901 census on the lists. I haven't even tried yet. At the end of the year I thought to myself, it is going to be crowded out on-line in January, so better to wait until about February to try. Need some patience, though, all the same. Some little hiccups, as with everything - yep, hiccups still going on in the State Library of Victoria several months after their new on-line catalogue was introduced, but it will all be sorted out given time. Patience, dear friends, patience! Sleep tight Graham
