"Isaac Thomas of the Empire, who was injured in the Empire colliery on Friday, as noted in the Record [do not have article], died on Saturday morning. He was well known and generally respected and his death is a blow to the entire community. Deceased was born in Merthyr Tydvil, Wales, on Feb. 9, 1838, and was a little over 57 years of age. He immigrated with his parents to America two years after his birth and lived at Carbondale. He commenced working in the mines when 7 years of age. At that time when purchases were to be made the residents of Carbondale had to ride to Wilkes-Barre on horseback. The reminiscences related in reference to these trips by Mr. Thomas were very interesting. He also worked in Scranton and Pittston before the '70s. From the latter place he came to Wilkes-Barre and has resided here since, working for the Lehigh & Wilkes-Barre Coal Co. from 1870 up to the time of his death. The following children survive him with his wife: John J. Thomas, Mrs. George Walters, Mrs. J.M. Jones of Pittston, Ida M., Charlotte and Gertrude. Mr. Thomas was an active member of Prospect Rock Lodge 490, Knights of Pythias, and also of the Mocanaqua Tribe, 128, Red Men. Both organizations will attend the funeral. The remains will be taken to Pittston for interment to-day at 1 o'clock. Rev. Mr. Lloyd will conduct the obsequies." Nancy Cook Pasadena, MD, USA

Although he was born in the USA, his parents were born in Neath Wales. Below are extracts with the pertinent information. "Dr. Davis was 58 years of age, and was born at Warren, Bradford County, July 5, 1837... "Deceased was a son of David and Elizabeth Davies [sic], who were natives of Llanguicke, near Neath, Wales, and who emigrated to this country in 1831, and settled on a farm at Warren, Bradford County, Pa., where the old homestead still stands. The following children were born at the old home: John Davies, resides at Neath, Bradford County, Pa.; Mary, wife of Rev. John Davies of Dodgeville, Wis.; Philip Davies of Neath, Pa.; Evan H.; Annie, now the wife of Hon. H. Howell of Neath, Pa.; Hon. W.T. Davies, ex-lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania; Thomas, killed in a railroad accident at Mahanoy in 1881; Dr. Rees Davies of Wilkes-Barre [the deceased]; Elizabeth and Catherine Davies, who resided at the old homestead. David Davies, the father, died in 1882, and Elizabeth, the mother, died in 1856. Both were buried at Neath, Bradford County. "Dr. Davis married, in 1867, Maggie E. Williams, daughter of Philip and Harriet Williams of Pike, Pa., and four children were born unto them: Maude (died in 1892), Walter, now a medical student in the University of Pennsylvania; Harriet and Bessie." No explanation is given as to why the doctor's surname is DAVIS, but his parents are DAVIES. Nancy Cook Pasadena, MD, USA

I would like to find the parents of Jonathan Collins DAVIS b: 28 Mar 1779 England or Wales A bio written on him claimed he was from England and came to America as a "boy", worked as a tailor in Wilmington, Delaware (indentured?) for several years before coming to Carroll County, Maryland in 1810 and purchasing property, first two lots in Uniontown (had tailor shop) and later a large estate in Middleburg, not far from Uniontown. However, tales from his eldest son's descendants claim they heard he was from Wales. He died 2 Jan 1842 Carroll Co, Maryland. His wife was Maria (Mary) WINTER (German) (1792-1865) whom he married in Carroll Co, Maryland on 17 Apr 1812. Herewith the joke of the day: The Australasian Shropshire Register came in from the out of town store to the State Library and was waiting for me at the desk, together with the 1879 directory. The ASR looked very inviting, as it was about eight volumes from 1901-1912, with a very fat one doubly shrink-wrapped against the atmosphere. At last here was a register of Australian folk who had emigrated from Shropshire and had formed an association. Much the same as the Welsh had done in some lands. Should be some good names in there! And there were - there was a Mrs. Blissfull Ewe living on a farm in Tasmania, and a Mr. Sturdee Ram up in Victoria. The ASR was not a list of humans, but a register of thoroughbred SHEEP! Apparently the quality of the Shropshire breed was such that thousands had been imported into Australia since 1864, and then in 1901 it was decided to set up a register of breeders. Ha Ha! Ahh well, not so much different from the human race! Baaahhhh. And so to the Commercial & Trades directory for 1879: There were some enquiries from the Welsh lists for Bristol - not that far away these days with a motorized push bike or one of those new-fangled motor scooters you stand upright on. I'd probably fall off, but then again.... a new lease of life, perhaps.....: Alas, the only things I could find in Bristol for those who enquired were a few records of WATHEN and WILLIAMS folks: Bristol Trades Directory Beer retailers: Whaten, Enoch, Stillhouse La.
